Maldives Votes for Parliamentary Elections, a Test For Muizzu's "Anti-India" Policy
Maldives votes for parliamentary elections as 368 candidates compete in the race for 93 seats. The elections are a litmus test for President Mohamed Muizzu’s "Anti-India" policy as this marks the first election after he asked India to withdraw its troops from Maldives. 89 Indian troops were deployed in Maldives for aid & training purposes. Muizzu assumed office with his “India-Out” campaign in September 2023. He is mostly seen as a pro-China leader. According to reports Muizzu awarded high-profile projects to Chinese companies in recent months. He is also the only Maldivian President to visit China first instead of India after assuming office. The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) which currently dominates the parliament with 41 seats is eyeing a majority in this election.
