This week, I picked up a Mamiya 7 135 panoramic adapter kit on eBay. This kit fits my Mamiya 7ii medium format camera and allows me to shoot with 35mm film in a panoramic format. The size of each image on film is 24mm x 65mm and you are supposed to get 16 images on a roll of 36.
I've been looking at these panoramic adapters for a while and although not that common, they do appear on the second hand market from time to time. I'll mostly be using it with my bulk rolled Ilford HP5+ which I tend to have available most of the time for when I need some black and white film.
The 135 Panoramic Adapter Kit itself is very well built and consists of four individual parts - the panoramic mask, cassette holder which holds the roll of film, the take-up spool and the rewind crank unit. Unlike shooting conventional 120 film (which has a backing paper) and ends up on the take-up spool and is removed from the right hand side of the camera, the 35mm has to be rewound back into the original film cassette. That's why there's a rewind crank that has to be fitted. It's a very easy process though and everything runs quite smoothly once the parts are in place.
Shooting in such a wide, panoramic format really makes you think about what's important in the frame and having a good balance of elements left and right for a good composition.
The roll I shot here was rated at 400 ISO and I mainly used aperture priority for my exposures. I developed the roll in Ilford ID11 (1+1) and the images were DSLR 'scanned' backlit on a light box with my Panasonic G9 and a Sigma 105mm macro lens. They were shot as RAW images and I used the Negative Lab Pro software plugin for Lightroom to do the black and white conversions. This has now become my preferred method for scanning 35mm film.

I can't find a Mamiya 7ii that fits my budget, but I do have a three Mamiya 645's (two standard and one AF). I have acquired over 100 rolls of 135mm film, color, slide, and b/w. All of these films are outdated. When I returned from Germany in 1980 a friend gave me was outdated film and chemistry that I used in my darkroom once I moved into my house. That film has been used up and it worked great. Back then I never thought about using 135mm in a MF camera. I have a couple of 3D printed adapters to use on the 35mm canisters for my M645. I guess it is time to start experimenting. Great presentation and thanks.

Real photographers focus on light and contemplation, gear is just a tool. I think Picasso, Van Gogh, Claude Monet wouldn't waste their time discussing which brush maker is the best, I guess they would just occupy their mind with what is truly important. Gian Lorenzo Bernini when carved his first head in stone when he was only 8, do you think he discussed with other about chisel makers? which was the best, sharpest, had the best handle?

I have the same panoramic adapter and use it with my Mamiya 7II sometimes, but even though I have the manual, in the beginning I was having lots of problems understanding how to install the adapter and load the film properly. I actually managed to load the film in a way that damaged the camera and had to have it repaired-not easy to find someone who can repair a Mamiya 7II film advance mechanism ... Now I know how to load the film, but I would have loved to have your video earlier. Thank you for documenting this so well.

Barney, Barney, Barney…..good to see he was able to attend this outing, Craig. The video was well done throughout. I was concerned when you began to demonstrate the adapter as the scene was fairly dark. However, once you shifted to overhead viewing it was exposed very well and presented fine detail there. Most scenes worked very nicely. But for me the orchard trees in the fog with the panoramic view from FG to fading BG area in the fog was excellent. As well as the spider web.

Thank you. I knew that by showing the adapter kit, I would need to try and show the loading process fairly clearly so I'm glad it came over alright and you were able to to see what was being done.

All of these shots are frame worthy!! I love using my pano adapter on my mamiya 7ii as well. I usually shoot without the film mask though as I like having the picture extend to the sprockets. If you don't like it, you can always crop it out too. This one option is a huge advantage over the X-pan and has no longer made me want the X-pan.
@CraigPrentisPhoto

I watched this for a second time because it's so good. A couple things: first, the overall approach with the M7 and the 135 pano kit is very astute and well explained. I now have one for my 7. Also, panos (as shown here) are not just for broad vistas, but close in, vertical, and Barney. Exceptional. Your videos are akin to a graduate course on composition, site location, exposure, and patience. When's the book coming out?! :-)

Great photos, really nice. I just ordered a panoramic setup for my Fuji GW690 but it looks a lot more difficult than yours. They really thought that one out and made it pretty easy. The photos were really awesome in the fog. That's the camera I've always wanted , but the price is a killer ! I really am happy with my Texas Leicas though, very sharp and not so painful on the wallet ! Just subscribed, really enjoyed it and your dog is awesome too ! LarryMac

I have the same camera and adaptor. I chose it over the Xpan which is a ticking time bomb for failure.

some amazing shots there, i assume there are no 135 frame lines in the viewfinder, how are you framing it? Ah sorry, watched further and you do mention framing lines in the viewfinder.. thank you

As if your gear wasn’t left field enough 🤔😁. Good way to mix it up though and I liked the upright one. Bit strange on it’s own but as a series of 3 vertical panos it could work well. Good stuff though Craig 👍

Yes, I think that's a good call - three vertical panos could work quite nicely with the right images.

Another great video. 1. I’m a big fan of your camera editing when you explain something and then you do a close up (without showing a camera tripod in frame). It’s so smooth that the viewers brain doesn’t detect the difference. 2.I also been exploring a bit with panoramic shots. I tried to roll my own 35mm into a 120 roll and use it with my own 3D made spool adaptors on hasselblad and Rolleiflex bodies. A la X-Pan, without owning one. I’m very happy with the results but I wish it was more streamlined as your Mamiya system. 3. I also been thinking on a large format adaptor that allows you to do the same but instead of 35mm you would use 120 film roll. That could be better for you since you shoot a lot of Large Format, also the bigger resolution and the smalll amount of grain would be better. Have you though about it?

Hi Alexandra, thanks for your comments. 1. Glad you liked it. Yes, filmed twice and then I try to edit it as seemlessly as possible to show more of a close up. It worked ok this time, but that isn’t always the case. 2. Yes, I tried using cheap 3D printed 35mm to 120 adapters but they just didn’t work in the Mamiya. I got one or two frames shot off but then I couldn’t wind it any further as it just tightened up. This panoramic kit was the only way to go. I have used the 3D printed adapters in other cameras successfully though. 3. Yes, I have thought about doing the same with a 120 back on large format. Maybe something for the future. Cheers

Beautiful photographs and great compositional tips for using the panoramic format. Thank you. You mentioned the crop marks in the viewfinder. Are these built in to the Mamiya, or have you added them yourself? Also, amazed at how contrasty your HP5+ photgraphs are. Mine tend to come out flatter. Could you perhaps share your development and printing process? (Or point to another video if you’ve already done one?).

The framelines are built into the viewfinder and show crops for the full frame and the pano and these change for the lens you have on there at the time. Same with the external viewfinder that you use with the wider lenses. This image needed a bit of work to make it the shot I envisaged it to be. It's incredibly flat on the neg and grainy being HP5 in the foggy conditions. I'll maybe do something in the future to show the working process afterwards.

Excellent, thanks. I have a 135mm pinhole camera with a panoramic facility which I have never used, so seeing your results I shall give it a try. The only fly in the ointment is I have had to buy an Epson flatbed scanner which can scan a panoramic image (my slide scanner wont do "odd" formats) so yet more expense. Its all your fault! :-)

Thank you, I’ve been dslr scanning my film recently with a macro lens and a light box. Really loving the quality/speed compared to my 35mm scanner set up. I did these panoramics with that method using the Canon film holders I use for the scanner. Shooting RAW images and converting with Negative Lab Pro - works a treat!

Great video Craig. I would like to try this with my RB67 but there is no rewind feature. Love the images especially the one of Barney on the bench. He seemed to be saying " You have been snapping all morning, how about one of me on this bench ?"..lol. Thanks for the chat and the walk. Cheers from Canada.

Every time I see a 4:3 or 3:2 image…I keep looking to the right and left for the rest of the image. It’s like watching a motion picture in 4:3.
