Marie Kondo is the reason everyone you know is suddenly cleaning up. She wrote a book and has a Netflix show called “Tidying Up.” If you haven’t seen it - basically, she makes people get rid of stuff. We’ve been doing our show for 16 years and Jimmy has accumulated a lot of stuff in his office at work. So someone thought it would be a good idea to ask Marie Kondo to help tidy up his office and this is how that went.

Jimmy's missing the point completely. He can only see the sillyness of thanking socks and waking up books. Ofc you're not doing it for the inanimate objects, Jimmy. You're doing it to wake up something in yourself. Finding appreciation in the surrounding you otherwise take for granted. And by doing so, clearly seeing what items brings you joy and which ones that mean nothing to you, and only take up space.
@prodestrian
@prodestrian 5 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, it's based on a Shinto belief that objects can have a "soul" after being owned for a long time. That's why she wakes up the books, introduces herself to the house, and thanks items that aren't wanted anymore. It's not just a silly gimmick that she came up with, it's obviously an important belief to her that she wanted to share with the world.
@globalklaus
@globalklaus 5 жыл бұрын
@@prodestrian Absolutely. You are totally correct. But it's not an easy transition for westerners. But the end result is the same. You don't really have to believe in the soul of inanimate things to take this serious. Just the realization that you're doing this to find appreciation, or "spark", for your every day surroundings.

Ellen's bit was exactly the same as this, even the punchline at the end (haha it didn't stay clean lololol). Not prime comedy, nor cool...

It's part of being famous. Some people will think of her method as second coming of Jesus and there will be others who think organizers are fraud. I personally like to clean and organize, but her audiobook was very insightful and I let go of the things I was holding on. The philosophy underneath her methods are too complicated to fit into TV 5 minute segments. But this exposer might lead people to read about her methods or watch her Netflix series.

Stephen Colbert is very respectful and kind to Marie, if you want to check out his interview. At one point the audience laughs when they're both kneeling to greet and thank his desk space, and Stephen makes sure to take the brunt of it off of her. He makes a dreamy face, looks up at the ceiling, and says "Thank you Ed Sullivan", but then follows Marie's lead and respectfully bows. And the audience applauds. He didn't play into the laughs, try to make a cheesy joke about the method, anything. It's a culture clash, but Stephen managed to navigate around it without leaving Marie embarrassed.

Oh my gosh. I'm from Japan, I love all my sweet American friends but it hurts to watch someone treating a Japanese lady like this. How American people act is already so different coming from Japan. You have to get used to talking loudly, you have to learn to speak very straight forward, you have to learn to verbally say "no" if you don't like something.We have this saying called "Read the air" meaning that we need to be sensing what others are feeling without having to make them say it. And Japanese are generally very respectful to the point where when Japanese people encounter something that they find disrespectful, they still smile, they still deal with it and hope that the other person will sense it, realize it and stop doing it. Ok, it might sound silly to some of you guys but I really did struggle with this when I first move to the US 2 years ago. I couldn't handle people's sarcasm (We rarely ever say sarcastic stuff), I didn't know what to do when people are making fun of me, I didn't know how to handle pushy people but to smile and be patient. I just hope that she is surrounded by many sweet people, leaving her country and coming to the US for work for a long term couldn't be an easy thing especially she is not fully comfortable with speaking English yet.

I'm not even Japanese, but what you said is so true! I still feel weird hanging out with "friends" who are extremely sarcastic and have an attitude of "it's just a joke." I would normally not be friends with people like that, but when they're your roommate or unavoidable work/school mate, it can be really draining. I don't know if I'm supposed to be "inconsiderate" back or just laugh with them laughing at me. I tried the golden rule once (treating someone the way they treat me) by bragging to a roommate who brags endlessly and she responded with "RUDE." I was so confused because I treated her the way she treated me but I was called rude. Normally I would just nod or try to sympathize, but after that I was like, could I have been calling her rude the whole time too? lol

I'm not Japanese (or American), but I'm sure a lot of people from the West are able to sense it when someone is feeling uncomfortable and "read the air". I guess it's a bit easier for us to say "no", but we struggle with it in certain situations as well. But what I saw in this video is just so disrespectful! Not everyone in the West is that rude, luckily.

"you can read it to her.. whatever"... That's really kinda insensitive tbh... Hate it whenever people speak above others who can't understand them. It makes them feel worse and it makes everyone around you feel worse since you include them in this little powerplay or whatever. That's what i kinda dislike about a lot of talk show hosts. Whenever someone comes on their show who actually is there to educate rather than just tell stories about themselves and have a conversation a lot of hosts seem to feel the need that it still has ti be their show, their comedy, their voice that should be heard in between. Just let them do their thing.

I like how Marie and the interpreter team up and snap back with “I’m not here to organise things for you” and “Well it sparks joy (let’s just move on)” Perfect responses! I work as a translator and like interpreters our job always gets overlooked. Not funny to put the interpreter under the spotlight because it was totally unnecessary

I would not say it's a rip off per se, because Kondo's show is very trendy right now. And most shows like Ellen and Kimmel need to stay culturally relevant. So they did it. But conan do did the same thing many years ago, before this was a thing.

Budleee Bazz yeah this annoys me tbh, ik its for a joke or to promote her shows, but at the same time it feels a bit disrespectful to marie, for instance in ellens case their recent marie kondos vids where the staff says “yeah i put all the stuff back in my office”
@bazli83
@bazli83 5 жыл бұрын
Yup. I know they are joking but I feel they are disrespecting her. I finished her book and I understood why socks were a very important piece of clothing to her and why we should be thankful for it. Ah well, at least it’s not a one off joke since everyone is actually doing the same gag.

Budleee Bazz yeah ikr and others might said “oh ur such a sensitive its just a joke” but ever felt like people ignored all the effort you put in your work and moved on in a breeze like nothing. I was formerly an interpreter and I just want to say that when he started rapping, in reality I would've tried to cut him off at some point to actually translate, but I would've been internally screaming. It's nerve wracking when you accumulate too much to be translated even if you're taking notes. Kudos to the interpreter, she was awesome and her translations were fast and fluid.

There's actually three syllables in her first name - the fact that it's spelled the same way as the common western name "Marie" is just a coincidence. It's まりえ or mah-ree-eh. Also her last name is pronounced kohn-doh, not kahn-do. Japanese pronunciation is pretty straightforward: just pronounce every vowel (don't combine the "i" and "e" in this case, for example) and pronounce each vowel the same way every time (it doesn't change based on English spelling).
@lukewilliams4815

DTwo I think in the context of an English-speaking audience, she chooses the pronunciation “mar-ee” as it’s easier for English speakers to understand. Not sure about Kondo though.
