One of the best things about fasting is that it shrinks your stomach and resets your taste buds. So when you do eat, you eat less and stuff like Apples and nuts taste amazing. Hardly anyone talks about this.

I just think you need to drop the word "fasting". If you're taking bone broth and bulletproof coffee and popping olives, etc.. You're not fasting: you're just doing a high caloric deficit. We used to call this "dieting".. You can call it what you want, but it muddies the waters when you're saying fasting but still taking in calories. It's just a contradiction in terms. So fasting" isn't the right word for it.. "Dieting" may not be the right word either. "Restricting.. maybe, would be better to say. We just need to create a better word for "caloric deficit".. WE need a nice trendy word to represent what you're doing.. because it's obviously working well. "Abstaining? maybe..

I like it. Al Kavadlo (bodyweight influencer) has gotten very lean on OMAD. He says he'll eat a piece of fruit or an egg or 2 if he gets really hungry before dinner. The key is long-term results, not being a purist. Personally, I'd avoid fruit. It jacks up my cravings just like other sugary things do. But pickles, olives, etc. make sense--get salt/electrolytes and maybe a little fat, which is still technically fasting by some definitions.

I've been fasting in various forms every day for over 6 years. I learned a hack from whom I don't remember now, That when you 'feel hungry' is to take a palm full of sea salt and lay that on your tongue until it melts in your mouth down around your tongue. Your 'hunger' pangs will be gone in 15 minutes or so. NOTE: You in fact were not hungry - just craving salt/electrolytes.

Great ideas/info. You’re basically doing an extended version of intermittent fasting. A long extended “Water Only” fast would bring some life changing results for someone like you. You definitely would give a 💩 after experiencing it. I’m talking 10days or more. I’m nowhere as fit as you but I’ve fasted for weeks(26 days) on water only and my strength and endurance increased. I could only imagine what it could do for someone as serious as you. I think what you’ve shared is a great starting point. Dr. Goldhamer has a ton of information on Water Fasting.

I've been using fasting for several years. I fast after dinner Sunday until Tuesday morning/noon. I only drink water with electrolytes and coffee. Sometimes I also use intermittent fasting, or prolonged fasts up to 72 hours. Autophagy occurs after fasting without food for 48-72 hours. “Auto” means self and “phagy” means eat, so the literal meaning of autophagy is “self-eating.” It's basically an evolutionary self-preservation mechanism through which the body removes dysfunctional cells and recycles them for cellular repair and cleaning, so if you're concerned about health, doing a 2-3 days fast--without food--every now and then can give remarkable results. Even fasting for 24 hours has shown to increase HGH levels significantly.

"When I'm fasting I allow myself to eat olives, pickles, bone broth, fermented vegetables, coffee with butter, and supplements." Cool Mark. THEN YOU AREN'T FASTING! End of story. You are doing something else. You can call it "Mark's smelly Bell's super shred diet," and I'm glad you think it has given you such great results, but it isnt fasting. It's kind of misleading to tell people you are doing 36, 48 or 72 hour fasts, when in fact you arent. As soon as the butter from the coffee hits your stomach, your body is burning that for energy and it is no longer burning your body fat. You are no longer in ketosis. Its like you forgot that the entire point of the fast is to try to emulate the dietary habits of early man, which is fast and feast. Ancient man didn't run to the fridge to chug some bone broth and snack a few pickles between hunts. When they fasted, they mostly did so with zero food until the next hunt came. It's not just calorie restriction. Its biohacking your own body to trick it into certain physiological and metabolic states to try to gain benefits that are locked away in ancient our evolutionary genetics. The moment you break a fast with anything no matter how small you are reducing the physiological and metabolic benefits of the fast, not just in terms of autophagy, but also in terms of blood sugar and insulin and everything that is hormonally connected to that. Your body fluctuates its glucose and insulin levels based on what is coming in, even if i has zero calories. As much as I enjoy listening to your podcast, and as much of a lifetime advocate of fitness I admit you have been, I wouldn't exactly describe your physique as "ridiculously shredded" at the moment, by any means. If we are looking to become "ridiculously shredded," we clearly need to follow someone else's personal diet plan if we are basing it on the results you have gotten, if we're being honest. Either way, fasting is fasting. To refer to the calorie restriction you are doing as timed fasting is misleading and it leads to unrealistic expectations of what fasting actually is for those that are new to it.

@user-tv1sy1uk5f given the fact he discusses what he eats during a fast-I don't see it as misleading at all. If you even remotely have half a brain you'll know what fasting actually means. It's called personal accountability.

Terrific video. I just don't understand why some fitness influencers won't use the proper terms. Fasting has a literal definition, that is a medical term as well. So to say you're fasting, then describe your eating pattern during your fast, is simply a false statement. Mark is describing extreme caloric restriction. He is not describing fasting, in the sense that the medical, or even the current fitness community understands and defines the term. He is right of course, he does not know about autophagy or any of the neurological status effects of proper fasting. If he did, then he obviously wouldn't use the term fasting while describing caloric intake during that period. ANY Caloric intake during a fast, compromises the neurological responses that could happen if you were actually not eating. Denying the body food, purposefully, causes a mental reaction and response that has physiological consequences. Extreme caloric restriction does similar, but the consequences are different. It's simply disputable to imply that both Fasting and Extreme Caloric Restriction are one in the same. Giving your body a little bit of food tells it one thing, giving the body zero food, tells it another, and it will respond accordingly.

I love your idea of fasting!!! We have people who do a true fast 24 hrs 3 days etc… I see them at the hospital 🏥 with acute kidney problems. 😮 I have let sugar back into my life and it moved back in. Watching videos for inspiration to reboot again.

I did a 22 day water fast and went from 207.6 to 185. When back to eating, about only 5 pounds of water weight came back. Basically, I was losing about 3/4 pound a day. After day 3, it got easier. Heartburn went away.

Studies have shown alternate day fasting leads to much greater lean mass losses, even when calories are equated to simple daily caloric restrictions. But I think you're on point with the learning to break away from boredom eating, etc.

Fasting is a good word. "starving" never sat well with people. It works well, i had a ton of success in the past, but only when i left cream and sugar out of my coffee. Having that cream and sugar in my coffee mid fast made evrything stall. For me it only works with black coffee

Last month I did a 21 day water fast. There’s been a lot of physical and emotional changes that have happened to me. I did gain my weight back though because I got back into my bad habits with food. I do plan to try doing another 21 day fast soon but going in with a better plan on how to end it. So I’m eating healthier foods. I definitely realize that I do have an addiction to carbs like sugar and breads

Just to share: One thing for sure you loose the frustration in your head. That feeling you get when you feel like you gotta feed an animal in your stomach that constantly reminding you, “I’m hungry” then you go for the snacks. Well you loose that BUT the trick is to cut ALL the sugar made sweets, drinks & snacks. If you can at least do that. Fasting becomes easier.
