MartinLogan Motion XT Series Loudspeakers Interview & Design Details

Now in their 4th generation, the Motion Series and Motion XT Series use newly-design waveguides to improve the performance of MartinLogan’s ‘Folded Motion’ AMT tweeters. All nine new speaker models boast at least 92 dB sensitivity, promising great things for home theater dynamics. We had a chance to interview Alan Tarrant (Senior Vice President) and Andrew Lindsey (Product Manager) of MartinLogan ‪@AudioAdvice‬ during the unveiling of these new speakers to get some design details. We discuss the benefits of the new waveguide, the new driver technologies and features designed into these speakers to provide excellent bass response in real rooms. This interview provides great insights as to what makes these new speakers so special and how they are an evolutionary improvement over the outgoing models.

Turns out I have a local Martin Logan dealer. Demo'd the B100 bookshelves and ordered them (and the C100 centre) on the spot. Detail, air, and imaging all a noticeable step above my current Polk LSiM 703s (along with an electric guitar fullness that is to die for). Found black to be the best of the colourways for me. Pictures do not do the gloss black of the cabinet justice.

Thanks for covering these new Martin Logan’s, Gene. I ordered the large stand mounts a few days ago and should have them soon. I also ordered the Polk R200’s and will compare them both and keep whichever I prefer. Coming from a pair of Klipsch RP5000F towers.

Gene, you are looking pretty jacked 💪🏻. Keep it up, brother! On another note, these would look even better with the grill design of the last generation. I still need time to warm up to Focal Chora-style grills which this line is using.

I have 2018-eera Motion 60XT's and I love them, but there was one area that had room for improvement: off-axis performance of the motion tweeter. I always thought the baffle needed some sort of wave guide to help open up the tweeter. I am really looking forward to hearing these in person.

Sure but Naim is a bit spendy for speakers at this price. You could look at the Yamaha R-N2000 2CH receiver as a great option.

Newbie here :) I have a room 24x18 and thinking highly of purchasing the following, ML F200 (Fronts) with ML Dynamo 800x, Motion XT series, Motion Series Book shelves for the rears. Is this a good setup for watching movies with surround sound? I have a Denon AVR x4700h will be running this pricey setup. Can you elaborate if this will fill the room with power and bass and Happiness?

If I can paraphrase Andrew Jones - the higher the sensitivity the lower the bass. I have found that 88-92db sensitive works out the best for me.

That's only true for limited dynamic speakers. You can still have great bass with higher sensitivity speakers and more dynamic range too.

What brand would you recommend to level up from the klipsch RP5000f. Martin logan 40i? Or something else

Yes, that cherry looked nice but that finish is kind of on the outs right now. I actually like the black in this new line for it's cleaner look.

What happens when these speakers are on carpet? If being on carpet isn't an issue for the bottom ports, I'm adding the XTs to my short list. And, do these need to be further from the front wall? Thinking of the F200 primarily.

The outriggers and feet raise them sufficiently, so it's not an issue.

@@Audioholics Ok, thanks for the reply. As for my other question, I'm assuming they need to be out from the wall some; my only placement option is about 3.5-4 ft from the front wall. If I get these, I'm hoping that will work.

I am very interested to hear these in person. I have had Sandy Gross Definitive Technology Towers / Studio Monitors for almost 23 years now and they keep kicking but thinking it might be time for a change in the Living room. I thought I might be going down the Polk Reserve series line however they have been on backorder for over six months.............the Martin Logans are considerably more, however. Need to be able to test drive.

Both great choices but the MartinLogans are a significant upgrade that justifies the added cost, IMO.

I just heard ML motion xt f100 at Bristol Hifi show in UK and they blew me away! Absolutely amazing especially considering the cost. 100% my next speakers.

I wonder why more speakers are THX or Dominus certified (or find another way help consumers more easily be able to discern output/spl/distortion/etc) Is it a licensing fee thing…Anybody’s know more about this? It’s why I love audioholics because they help provide context ❤️ I know perlisten is open about data as well, but wish there was more openness to sharing data among all manufacturers

Gene, the last generation were/are horrible, I should know I have a whole system at my lake house and they sound like nails going down a chalk board with music... A tad bright on movies, but movies are inherently bright to begin with. The new Motion series and XT series are "LEAPS" above the old stuff.. The 4th generation is the biggest change, it's actually very good with both music and movies now.. I would love to replace my stuff up North with something with these... I can tolerate my surrounds in my ceilings but would love to replace what I currently have.
