Mastering Edges in Watercolor

One of the things that sets mature work apart from amateur work is the treatment of edges. When all edges are painted hard, the work lacks authenticity, as that is not the natural way the human eye sees things. In this video I will demonstrate the use of a variety of edges to add a sense of impressionism and to create a visual pathway to the center of interest.

I can't tell you how much this video helped me to understand what I'm doing wrong in most of my work. As well, I have a photo of a beautiful urn with planta/leaves in it, a bit similar to yours. It was taken at the flower market in Paris a few year back. I cannot seem to do it justice because I paint too tight, too detailed, as much as I would like not to. I loved watching how your brush danced over the work and your amazing use of colour. I don't think I could ever get to this level of achievement with my own work but I have every confidence that I can now get to a bit higher level as a result of watching this, and I plan to watch it again. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your photo and sketch. I might try it, following this demo again, and then try my Parisian Urn. I watch a lot of vids, but from my own purchased collection and from KZfaq. I have to say, I feel I've learnt the most from watching this.

Hi Maureen. Just picked up my phone and read your comment. This is what makes doing my videos worth it to me. To hear that they are helping even one other artist is the greatest pay back I could ask for. Thanks for sharing your experience, and don’t feel that painting loosely is out of reach-I still want to get better at it too. With your strong desire I’m sure you’ll do it. Sometimes we just have to get mad at our mistakes enough to finally fix them, with lots of ruined paper along the way.💕

Please thank your son for all he does in the recordings. I was glad when you mellowed the background, I don’t think I would be brave enough to use the manganese blue but it really worked. As always, you are so generous to be sharing your art experience. I think that the highlight on the tall pot bugged you because it was mostly vertical while the highlight on the ground received light directly from above and was actually more lit.

Thank you for sharing your talent so generously. Your work is stunning and I can relate to your relaxed style of teaching. I'm new to watercolor and still trying to figure out color palettes. Would you please list the colors you are using so I can learn how to apply and mix color? You mentioned magenta and sap green, but I didn't catch the other color names.

Hi David! I think as near as I can tell, I used Indanthrene Blue, Sap Green, and it looked like some Alizarin Crimson. I love adding a red to a green mixture to dull it back.

I liked the bits of edges, that were your original pencil drawing. Do you ever use watercolour pencils to lay down the foundation sketch?

Hi Gary. Interesting that you ask this question. Just recently on my new channel, I have experimented with using a water-soluble pencil for my drawing. But I wasn’t happy with it, as it grayed the water when I wet the paper. I think I’ll stick to my usual 6B pencil and just erase it out at the end. Thanks for watching!

What kind of equipment do you need to make a video with your iPhone?

Pretty much just a phone with a good camera and a lot of memory. I bought the iPhone 12 for that very purpose. You’ll need a pair of stand lights to light your work and a stand to hold your camera above your work. Then you’ll need an editing program. I’m using IMovie, an app for the I phone. But that’s the equipment I’m using for my other channel-More Laurel Hart. The stuff used for this channel is way out of my league.

Do you mean the easel I’m using? It was homemade by a man who no longer sells them but you can find a similar one called “Symphony” at Jerry’s Artarama online.
