One of my viewers said that when she watches me paint, she's afraid I'm going to ruin things, but then "by some strange alchemy", the painting comes together in the end. In this video I will explain some of the "magic alchemy" involved in painting in watercolor--through mixing the elements of pigment particles, water, and gravity together.
11:58 - Paints I use on my palette.

Coming from oils to watercolor has been a real challenge for me. I knew i was a control freak but thats why i have choose to try watercolor. TIme to give over the control just like in life as disabilities have made it impossible for control of everything else. Thank you for a step by step different approach to my problem. Since i can not go to classes this has been a God send, thank you.

Thank you Marjorie. There have certainly been a lot of things out of our control in 2020, haven’t there? I hope you find more freedom in watercolor!

Marjorie I thought I was the only one, I am also struggling with control issues on a daily basis, and I was trapped by watercolor too, I later realized life had gaven me in a strange way the method to master leting go.... Watercolor

Thank you for leaving the reference photo showing. I think it is so important to see the artists reference that they are using while working so we can have a better understanding of the process. For some reason very few people who post tutorials don't show the reference for their paintings. Another reason I frequent your channel!

You are a wonderful teacher! Everything is explained clearly, and each lesson has one main idea that is your focus. You introduce it at the beginning and then come back to it at the end to reinforce it in our minds. Obviously you spend a lot of time planning each lesson. As a teacher myself, I really appreciate your efforts. And your painting is lovely! You don't get all bogged down with little details, but rather you try to capture colors and values. It's a lesson I really need to work on! I visited Zion and Bryce last year, and now I want to go back to Arches and Capital Reef--just gorgeous!

This was such a joy to watch! I love how you filmed the entire painting with the reference photo. It made it much more enjoyable. The only thing I struggled with wanting to change is to not leave the whites on the mountains totally white but to soften those whites with a softer very light color. The only time I would leave them white like that is if it were in the winter with snow. Am I wrong? I must be. To me it seems like the painting is unfinished because the whites seem too stark and unnatural. I’m just an intermediate painter though and would love to know. It’s how I learn and become a better painter. Thank you so much!! You really are amazing!

I would not say you’re wrong-we all have our own tastes, and perhaps it would have been a good idea to tone down the whites with a very light value. But To me nothing says sunlight like the white of the paper, so I opted to leave it white.

We’re using three cameras: A Nikon D610 with 50mm prime is shooting Laurel. A Sony RX100 is shooting the palette. And a Sony RX10 is shooting the painting. Audio is recorded separately with a Zoom H4N. Editing is done in Adobe Premiere Pro. Footage from the three cameras is synced in Premiere using the audio. The key is to set the exposure and focus correctly and then go full manual on the cameras so nothing changes (like white balance or focus) from start to finish. And then framing the painting is important. I frame it so that we’re only cropping left and right, but never top or bottom. This makes use of the camera’s full sensor and gives a clean view of the painting (no scaling on that camera). You can see how we’ve evolved the layout from our first video to this latest one. I’m much happier with our current layout. It just evolved with some experimentation and experience.

Nice painting. But the highlights in the mountain doesn’t look quite right to me. I think the overall painting should of been a little more darker and then add some lighter value colors in the highlight areas in the mountains

Thanks Raymond. You are not alone in your suggestion. There have been a couple of other comments saying the same thing. I still like the higher contrast though. But that doesn’t mean I’m right.😊

Oh wow, I thought just the #8 of the. LC brushes was discontinued! That’s disappointing. Winsor Violet is the purple.

Hi Janet. One is burnt sienna and the other is Transparent Oxide Red, but I’ve been told the Winsor Newton Burnt Sienna is the same pigment as the Daniel Smith Trans. Oxide Red.
