The importance of painting what you love and have a strong emotional connection to cannot be over emphasized. People will readily recognize whether your feelings for your subject are authentic or not. If you don't have a fondness for what you are painting, chances are pretty good that your viewers won't either.

Oi Marcos! Como vai? I learned to love and admire the Bahian culture while I was there! Was my history lesson about the Bahian women correct? So nice to hear from a “fellow” Bahian! Did you survive carnaval this past month?

Watching you Laurel, after doing so several years ago when I was just feeling my way in watercolor. I'm now at the point where I know what I like and want to do but am having trouble getting started. You paint the way I just love and I'm newly inspired by you and your work. I think I can get there using your tutorials now as my reference and I'm fired up and ready to go! PS We lived in Brazil for a while and love the Brazilian people as you clearly do. Bahia is a magical wonderful place and your gentle love for it and its people shows. Parabens!

I have watched many painters, all of them possessing awesome painting skills. I have watched a few of yours too. How you stand out from the others is your combined expertise in painting and also your ability to communicate. Basically, breaking down the process and simplifying it. It looks easy, though its not. Of course, the background make it immensely interesting. Thanks.

Have enjoyed this simplistic way of painting. I’ve been painting for 30 plus years and am so excited and cant wait to try this method of painting. I teach watercolor painting every summer for 2 weeks at a summer camp and can’t wait to try this there too. Loved your work you have me so anxious to get this started. Thanks again!

Another marvelous video. I like so many things in it: Paint what you love as much as love what you paint. You give your thoughts as you paint. That way, I know why you do as you did. Your style of painting is what I love most.. loose yet with details that will excite the viewer, and the very colorful rendition . Not loud and shocking but gentle and sweet. Hope to see more of these videos regularly.

Merci Laurel. Bravo. 🌺

I have watched a few of your demos and I have learned so much! And now I have learned that you had lived in Brazil which is so cool because I am Brazilian and have been living in the US for 22 years. Interesting that I've been avoiding to paint subjects that are close to my heart, for insecurity, and just recently painted one of my cats and it came out really nice. Thank you for bringing up this matter of having an emotional link to your subject and not just because it looks pretty. You just opened up my mind and my heart. Muito obrigada!

Great tutorial on the use of triads. The first time I watched one of your tutorials, several years ago, I wasn't sure how everything would "melt" together to make a cohesive painting. Now, as I watch you I'm "getting" it. I'm going to try your method using Cerulean Blue, since I don't have Manganese....I think it will read almost the same. Thank you for your heartfelt passion.

You mention that you took a camera along with you wherever you went . . . in my case, I carry a fresh volume of my ongoing journal with me everywhere ... even when I'm following rabbit trails late at night at my kitchen table, watercolors at hand, but mostly fountain pen doodles and note taking. In this, I fell upon your post (surprise, it was just posted a few days ago! and already over 6000 views). How lovely that you can share your techniques with others. Thank you for this generosity. I regularly wish I could just sit and paint with someone else who has more experience and technique. You are this for me tonight. And I thank you. I took up 2 page spreads in my current book with my notes and a rough rendition of some of what I gleaned from you just now. Having never taken watercolor classes, even watching your basic setups was instructive. Please know that your double camera angles is really ideal. There were times when you would do a little thinking and I could watch you examine the piece and then make decisions about what you would do next. Your personal notes about your experience with the people of Salvador was really engaging. Thanks for taking us into your studio.

Thank you so much for all your video’s. They are so alive and informative. I love your style both in painting and chatting on camera. You have been such a help with more advanced(to me anyway) techniques and styles that I can adapt for myself. During the pandemic I have had such a mental block overcoming the white page in front of me. Procrastinating about what to paint and how to approach it, I have barely made any cohesive marks. You have inspired me to make a wild start using startling triads to see what happens. Will let you know , wish me well and you and yours stay safe.x

Hello Mrs Hart I am very happy to tell you that Cheap Joe's which is a professional art supplier sells your favorite wc paper. They are online and deliver. The prices are great for your 140lb full sheets. I love your art and it has inspired me to try your style also. I enjoy wc, pastels, colored pencils and ink. Thank you for your tutorials. I have seen sometimes ones who seem just to throw color all over their paper. I know art is in the eye if the beholder but your colors and ideas are completely organized in beauty. I am doing a ballet scene and never did a 16 x 20 size your style so I just started filling up an area of backstage that was black in your fav high key triad. Then I went over that in indanthrone blue and loved the background! I just hate being boring. Thank you for you inspiration. Can't wait to introduce my family of artists to Laurel Hart's style. Take care. Winsor and Newton paper is alive and well.

Yes, anything can be beautiful if painted beautifully. In the movie, “Miss Potter” which is the story of Beatrix Potter who wrote and illustrated the Peter Rabbit series, she talks of her having painted the pig’s slop bucket because it was so beautifully lit. Truly, beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Thank you!

Laurel, I share your thoughts on WN c/p paper. Years ago they sold it in pads , blocks and full sheets. I’d go to Ft. Lauderdale to get it. I can’t imagine why they stopped making it. I loved the softness and the way it took the paint. I do get their new one (in the gray cover, ) but just not the same. Most artists I know paint on Arches, but neither that nor Fabriano suit me. I need all the help I can get and WN did that ..LOL

I love your watercolor videos. I found them when google searching for “colorful watercolor shadows”. Your videos are my favorite thing on the internet. You paint so beautifully. They inspire me to paint more often and expand my skills. I love hearing about your experiences in Brazil. My husband served as a missionary in Brazil and my son is currently serving as an elder in Colorado Denver North mission. I am grateful for those who look after the missionaries! I would love to hear more about your work flow in the Studio. It is wonderful that you were awarded the AWS gold medal. When did you decide to set the goal of becoming a AWS signature member? What helped you most in achieving that goal? Please keep making videos. Thanks for the inspiration and advice.

Hi Dana! I love hearing from artists who also share the love I have for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints! It’s so fun to learn that your husband served a mission in Brazil too! And that you have son currently serving! The young missionaries have such a special place in my heart! They sacrifice so much because of their love for the Lord. I talk more about my gold medal in the video on success in watercolor, if you haven’t seen it. I wanted to be a part of the AWS ever since I started painting in watercolor and I truly treasure the accomplishment of that goal, but over the years I have learned that there are many other measures of success than receiving awards in juried shows. Thank you for watching Dana!

Hi Becky! The umbrella is only used in filming. I am in a filming studio when these videos are produced, not my art studio. At the art studio I have LED track lighting and a light over my table easel like most ordinary studios. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for sharing your love of your subject -- these beautiful women, spiritual leaders and visual reminders of their country's historical heritage. I enjoyed learning your watercolor technique as you painted this amazing woman; however I am perplexed and disappointed that after having spent several years as a missionary in their country, and admittedly admiring these spiritual women, and paying to take their photos for future subjects in your paintings, you did not feel it important to understand/remember the spiritual meaning behind their beads and lace ...

Mary Ragusky Hi Mary! I would love to know more about the religious symbolism behind the beads and lace. Unfortunately the language there is Portuguese and I was not able to converse with these women fluently enough to learn in detail the meaning of their religious rites. I would love to learn more as I do know there is great meaning in their beautiful cultural costumes. Thank you for commenting.

I love your channel. I just started to learn how to draw and paint in watercolor. I specially like to paint people. But I’m struggling to keep my portrait painting fresh. Would love to see you do some basic lessons. And how do you know when and where to put your triad colors.
