The huge smile on your face when the drums dropped was priceless. This is one of the most famous drum drops ever. I remember when this song was first realeased back in the 80's.. you were just cruising along and then bam.. you were NOT expecting that! LOL... Like some others have said the airwaves were saturated with Phil Collins so I got a bit tired of listening to him, but in recent years have gotten back into him.. no matter what, you have to respect his musical genious. Thanks for doing this one, young man...

He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son is on the Domino tour with Genesis currently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

OMG, those drums!!! Wow! 9:32 and following. i'm so there. That music in the beginning was fascinating. This sounds silly, but I didn't realize they could make such keyboard sounds when I was a kid in the 80s. Fascinating. My favorite song by him, that never fails to make me cry, is "Groovy Kind of Love". I didn't know his was a cover until only a few years ago--I thought it was his song. Now what my dad said when I was six makes sense. At that time I thought he was saying Collins' cover was recorded 25 years before then. He was actually saying that the song came out 25 years prior, and that Phil had rerecorded it. :) Good memories. Okay, so... 2004, according to another comment, was when this was recorded. It makes sense with all the vocoder and keyboard stuff being more advanced. Love, love, love the drums. WOuld love to hear just the drum track for this.

Phil was the percussionist for the rock band Genesis. He became the lead singer of Genesis when then leader singer, Peter Gabriel left the band to pursue a solo career. Phil is in the top three of all time greatest song writers and performers. I believe only, Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney are ahead of him. Phil had the golden touch. He wrote several chart topping songs for decades.

I believe Phil wrote this song after he'd been on tour with Genesis for 2 months, he came home to find that his wife had left him and run off with someone else. His heartbreak is evident in the lyrics and his emotion in his voice. As for pounding those drums it seems he is taking his frustration out on them and belting the life out of them for the pain and suffering he's been through. That's my interpretation anyway as a layperson listening to someone who is totally devastated and showing raw emotion.

This masterpiece is proof that good music touches souls no matter of age! For those who don't know details about Phil Collins: he was born in 1951, an English drummer, singer, record producer, songwriter, and actor. Collins is considered one of the world best, accomplished artists. Between 1982 and 1990, Collins achieved three UK and seven US number-one singles in his solo career. He said that story of this song (only a story, mind you, not reality) is that he saw the guy his wife cheated him with drowning and just stared while voraciously taking in the revenge. Also this show was maybe the last before his retirment.

Love the reaction & musical analysis. Phil is a giant, but he & Mike Rutherford & Tony Banks had an interactive genius that made them all even greater. I've listened to this song thousands of times (at least) since it came out, still get goose bumps as the drum drop approaches. If you're into drums, check out the duets between Phil & Chester Thompson (who is also a genius drummer). The way the 2 of them play together, trade off leading & following, is magic.

The programming of the CR-78 is awesome. when he gets on the drums it's perfect. It's true this isn't complicated, but it's tasteful and just right. His drumming on all the crazy time signatures in Genesis songs shows his drumming chops.

It's the way his voice doesn't waver at all with the exertion when he's beating the hell out of his drums. He has such impressive vocal control. I've seen him live at least half a dozen times, and his concerts were always incredible. It's so sad he can't drum anymore due to health / spine problems. My favourite Phil Collins songs are "I Wish It Would Rain Down", "Against All Odds", and "All of My Life". My favourite Genesis songs (from the Phil Collins as singer era) are "Dreaming While You Sleep" and "Mama", but there are just so many brilliant ones.

Yeah, this is just raw pleasure as a piece of musical instrumentation. I've heard him speak to the crafting of the musical bits for this song and he felt a little underwhelmed with the drums in the aftermath. I'm an artist, just not a musician and i can identify with this in a way. Sometimes we don't know when to quit. He wanted something big and elaborate for the drum solo. The problem is that would likely have ruined or wasted the masterful buildup to it. The simplicity of the drums here give an almost primal sense to the song which it seriously needs. The emotion he was working out in this song has to have it. And when he unloads on the kit, a little bit is quite enough. It's one of the most powerful songs in it's intensity that I've heard in my life now at 53. This was originally written as a piece for the show Miami Vice back in the day. It was a masterpiece then.. what he's done with it overtime has encrusted more treasure on the pile. This is perfect.

To be young and have music like this was magical. So many great British bands, live music and the talent was immense. Try Queen Bohemian Rhapsody. This song helped me cope with my Divorce I could relate to every word. Genesis were a bottomless pit of talent.

Yep 3 Great fun people ❤. I saw this phenomenal performance in 2004 at the United Center Chicago. Is almost like Anton was there with us that day but Anton was only 8 back then lol. At my age remembering past concerts is heartwarming. ❤.

Chills every time I watch it! And I’m always a little nervous that he’s not going to make it to the drum kit on time, lol!

Great reaction---very good observations. I will look forward to more of your reactions---and you got it right, Seeing this live, I had the same reaction in June of '85.

Strange Story related to this song. So i was in my early 20's and i still had my Great grandmother but she was in bad health to the point where it was just a matter of time before she passed although with her attitude you wouldnt think so. i was home jamming to music and it was really early in the morning , i had just got off a call with a friend well while im listening to music this song came on and not 10 minutes after it ended did my family get a call that my great grand mother passed away.
