We should be grateful to the Elamite king. Although he stole the stele, he at least left us the information on where he stole it and whose stele it was. Modern artefact looters should learn from him... or rather leave ancient artefacts to archaeologists.
@HistorywithCy

Yeah that's a really interesting point. The famous stela of Hammurabi (also in the Louvre) has the same story - looted from Sippar by Shutruk-Nahhunte and discovered by archaeologists in Susa. For years it was our only knowledge of Hammurabi's law code until later excavations found other fragments of it in various parts of the Near East. Along with the story of the artifacts, it also let's us know how weak the ruling Kassite dynasty must have been if Shutruk-Nahhunte was able to venture so deep into Babylonia and sack an important city like Sippar. Interesting stuff for sure!

I have learned a bit about this artifact during my art history course and wanted to add something! The composition, while still relatively simple, is something rarely found in Mesopotamian art. Unlike most art from the era, it's not linear(like the Standard of Ur, for example) but more organic. The fallen warriors are some of the oldest depictions of "dynamic" poses! Fantastic video, thanks a lot!
@LuisAldamiz

What do you think about the mountains? They are schematic yet somehow very realistic, especially considering where the war took place.
@arturiwinski9473
@arturiwinski9473 2 жыл бұрын
@@LuisAldamiz didn't really want to touch on that because I couldn't find my notes and this part is kind of fuzzy in my memory but the mountatins were definitely there. Depictions of nature aren't that common in Akkadian art, are they? At least this is what I seem to recall.
@LuisAldamiz

@@arturiwinski9473 - I don't know much about what is common or not in the Akkadian art but it's certainly somewhat different re. Sumerian art and this reminds me of Hammurabi's Code's decoration somewhat but not in that detail of the mountains of course. It also reminds somewhat in its "victory and glory" theme and how it's depicted to Narmer's Palette. I just thought that the mountains are very prominent and give the victorious side a "stair" to be climibing in triumphant pose, almost as if ascending a zigurat or to the heavens even, but also that it is exactly the kind of difficult geography in which they fought and (allegedly) won, which is the same one in which their (Indoeuropeanized) modern descendants, the Luli, still live: very mountainous country.

Great video! Elam was a rival to Mesopotamian kingdoms for two millenia. Akkadians,Sumerians,Amorite Babylonians,Kassites and Assyrians. They had their own culture and it is a shame their texts are still poorly understood. For the Elamite kingdom who stole the artifact it was probably a moment of glory. He was "avenging" Elam defeat to the Akkadians a thousand years before (like the Sassanid king Khosrow II trying to avenge Persian defeat to Macedonians ,but now fighting the Rhomaion/greeks). Naram-Sin is a peculiar figure.He was a mighty conqueror (he even surpassed his grandfather) but was also described as having a god complex Mesopotamia literature. I hope someday Agade/Akkad will be find.Imagine the treasures in texts (from religion to chronicles) locked in the ruins.

@HistorywithCy
@HistorywithCy 2 жыл бұрын
There's no proof that he did in any text that I've read, but I wouldn't be surprised. Most of these rulers of the time tried to cement their legitimacy by claiming to have had some relation to great personages from the past. Given that he was a powerful king, warrior and ultimately traveled all over the then known world (similar to Gilgamesh), I think that along with his grandfather, Naram-Sin would have likely sought to claim some sort of relationship between himself and the Sumerian hero Gilgamesh, especially in the Sumerian heartland where texts seem to indicate that revolts were common. Just my thoughts though but great question!

That would be a fun thing to do for sure, the only problem is finding artifacts that can be directly attributed to some of them. For example, while there are walls of Jericho that obviously were knocked down and rebuilt over the ages, there is no way to prove archaeologically that Joshua was the one who knocked them down like in the Bible story. But, there are some characters in the Bible, both heroes and villains (examples, Cyrus the Great, Sennacherib, Nebuchadnezzar II, etc.) who there is a lot of archaeological evidence that one could do. I had done one on Cyrus the Great some time back, but separate ones on some of these other figures of history that are also found in the Bible would be a fun thing to do for sure! Thanks for the suggestion, really appreciate it! Stay safe!

😂 I never thought of that now that you mention it, I see it! Now all we need is Babe the Blue Ox. Actually, there's a Sumerian artifact of a bull covered with lapis lazuli that with some imagination might resemble him. That could be another episode 😂. Thanks for stopping by, appreciate it! Stay safe!

Kim Jong declared himself a god in North Korea. Also in the Capitol is The Apotheosis of George Washington. Just a few off top of my head but it's actually very very common.

Well done CY but you stopped short of mentioning Naram Sin as the possible biblical Nimrod, do you have at least a personal opinion on the matter?
@HistorywithCy
@HistorywithCy 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I just stuck to the artwork itself. My personal opinion...hmm, don't really have one. I've read that it could be Naram-Sin, Sargon of Akkad, even Hammurabi as possible historical Nimrod's. I've never really looked into that though. Thanks again for stopping by and glad you like these! More on the way, stay tuned and safe!

I’m curious, what is the current Iranian govt’s view of Elam and it’s ancient history? Is it celebrated and acknowledged, or shunned because it’s not Islamic? Or is it a point of pride because it carries the Iran vs Iraq narrative?
@HistorywithCy
@HistorywithCy 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I can't speak for the government, but to be honest I don't think that Iranians in general are even too aware of Elamite civilization. I think that this has to do with the Iranian people's culture and language being descendants of Achaemenian and especially Sasanian periods. Elam is not not seen by most who have knowledge of Iran's ancient history as being directly related to the Iranian people, and so I think for this reason it's not discussed much. This is just my observation... Thanks for the comment, appreciate it! More on the way, stay tuned and safe!

Relatively few? What??? I think there’s been an incredible amount of men who have gotten so puffed up and megalomaniacal that they definitely breach that line of promoting oneself as a god versus just a mere leader or king. If anything I think that standard is what gave birth to the three predominant religions from that same region in the world right now and the very way the Abrahamic books were written. I wonder if that standard of styling oneself as a god is what led to tribes vying for more power to create a deity out of their leaders - Jesus and Mohammed.

Muslims do not worship prophet Mohammad. Prophet Muhammad himself specified that no statues or images be made of him. So how can you even claim of megalomania? Even prophet Jesus preached about the oness of God like other prophets did. They can not be held accountable for the actions of other people that disregard their teachings.

7:45 Im pretty sure that is gilgamesh also. He is holding a lion in one hand and i guess a lion in the other hand. That is classic gilgamesh. That motif has been found in harrappan digs too. That makes me hope that the Sumerians had some Harrappan connection. Im open to other possibilities of course.

Art is cyclical... Ya know? Art started as a simple, stylised, form of expression used to rapresent reality while not necessarely being realistic. Sometimes it was used to rapresent feelings or ideas such as POWER and STRENGHT. Eventually art "evolved" and became increasingly more realistic... And then it became stylised again... And then realistic again... And then stylised again... And then realistic again... And then stylised again... And then realistic again... And again and again and again. So, does art really evolve? I don't think so... art transcends time and is not bound to evolution or eras like tecnology. Art can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of the era they lived in. Ancient art will remain beautiful and inspire future artists for thousands of years. It is not inferior to modern art because , despite the stylistical evolutions of the various art forms, it still influences it directly.

Well said my friend! I agree. It's interesting, many believe that this stela is actually the inspiration for the Behistun Inscription of Darius I (or at least the relief accompanying it). Who knows, but it is a beautiful work of art and was likely even painted, so it must have been quite colorful as well. Hope all is well with you and thanks again for your insightful comments, always enjoy reading them!

@@HistorywithCy Thank you. I really apreciate your comment. I really do. I guess studying Art's history was not that pointless after all.😂 We are currently in the Ganesh Chaturti period. Hopefully things will get better and the Lord will give us all some sollace A lot of things happened yesterday, right after the beginning of the festival. So maybe it is a sign. I guess maybe things will get better.
