Mateba's are a rare bird. The MTR6 is among the rarest. We compare the engineering against a S&W revolver, and find most of the parts are common to both. NOT a tutorial...we show what you need to learn, not how to do . Cannot perform at this level? Do NOT attempt.
Support us: / anvil and a big shout out to those that do.....

Hey Mark, thanks for this. A couple of months ago I became obsessed with how the Mateba and Chiappa systems function. I can be a little obsessive and this video will keep me from developing an ulcer because there are very few good references on the mechanism. Now I can just come back here instead of pulling my hair out and chain smoking. Big ups big man

Ian McCollum recently did a review of the semi-auto version of this gun (in .44 mag). He noted that the grip attachment is a weak point and is hard on solid wood grips. The gun he was showing had metal replacement grips.

This was very interesting. I've never seen one IRL, and probably never will. Even so I've always loved the concept of the Mateba. Now I understand that more than 90% of what I've read and heard about these has been said or written by people with exactly as much hands on experience with them as I have, that is none what so ever. That's why it's interesting to hear you say things like at 5:05 "So all the pieces to a Smith & Wesson or a Colt or any other revolver are here, they are just aligned differently and this was definitely built, I'm going to call it the Glock of revolvers. It was definitely designed as a machine tool, and it's pretty well done." Most of what I've read and heard has been people saying the, yes it's a cool and interesting design. But the mechanics is so complicated and weird that it's extremely unreliable and the double action pull is atrocious. Well the mechanics seems well designed. Sure it's more complex than a S&W, but I can't claim I see a lot of things that would be prone to breakage. And as far as the double action pull... 7:35 "and this has got to be one of the smoothest revolvers I have ever fired in my life" Well that's that for the "atrocious" double action pull. This video only reinforce my feeling that the designer really was on to something with this design. It's not perfect, nothing really is, but there are a lot of things right with it. One of the problems is the cylinder gap down low just above your hand. If it had the cylinder sealing against the force cone like the Nagant M1895 that wouldn't be a problem, but it would complicate the design even more. But hey, I can dream right?

Wow, so little muzzle flip on a 357 is impressive!! I saw one of these once, but I think it was a 44 Mag, and the price tag dictated that I not ask for the seller to take it out from under the glass. Thanks for sharing the inner workings, just like a Smith, but not!!

For context, this is part of the MTR series, these models are single/double action revolvers and not the Auto Revolvers that Mateba are better known for. If you want info on the Auto revolver Ian over on Forgotten Weapons has his own video where he takes one down and shows you how it operates. That model of course having a custom grip with the original solid wood one being assumed to be long gone due to the poor quality of the grips.

History and how it works has to be the main reasons I am intrigued and amazed at how engineers designed things. The clockwork and engineering involved in these pistols are beyond their time. Very intelligent people back in the day designed and built pistols that new model pistols incorporate that old tech

Exhaust jets only go out sideways, not down on a revolver because the frame is down. The fact that the bore on a Mateba is a few scant fractions of an inch or an inch+ closer to the hand(s) means little in a revolver. You don't want your hands on either side of the cylinder gap during firing because your hands will get burnt and incur 1st and/or 2nd degree burns.
