I happen to work for goodwill, more specifically in the district in which you purchased that goodwill guitar. The manager of the online sales department told me about your video when I spent a day with them when I was looking into changing positions within the company. For those who doubt that he purchased it from goodwill I can tell you he really did because the whole team was pretty excited over the video that he made on it. I look forward to you next update video on that guitar.

I bought a 1964 Fender Super Reverb at a rummage sale in 1987. It truly sounded like crap, but some wise person advised me that any blackface Fender amp was well worth what I paid, working or not. So I brought just the head to a reputable repair shop. When I got it back, I hooked it up to the speakers, plugged it in, and it still sounded very weak. I talked to the amp repair guy, and he said to take a 9 volt battery and hold it to the 1/4 " speaker connector, and watch the speakers to see if they all moved in the same direction. Sure enough, three of the four 10" speakers moved out, while one of them moved inward. (they were wired consistently, but one was for some reason in reverse polarity to the other three.) So I swapped the wires around on the speaker that was out of phase with the others, and KA-BOOM!! That blackface Super Reverb has been my go to amp ever since. So, if you run across a vintage multi speaker tube amp that does not sound as it should, it's possible that one of those speakers is wired backwards, even if it looks to be wired correctly. That 9 volt battery trick saved me from getting rid of a great vintage amp that sounded like crap just because a couple speaker wires were inverted.

I don’t know if you are specifically looking for a vintage hardtail Strat or if you’re open to a new one. If you are okay with a new one Fender added a hardtail option to the Mod Shop back in the summer and Sherwood Green is currently an available color in the Mod Shop. You should be able to get one that way for $2,000 or slightly less. I’ve also been very interested in a hardtail Strat myself and I want one with a maple fretboard which means the one current production model that Fender offers the Robert Cray Signature (in Mexican made or Custom Shop versions) isn’t what I’m looking for unless I swap the neck. 70s hardtail Strats seem to be plentiful and not overly expensive, and there have also been few hardtail options since the late 90s off and on including the Big Apple Strat, an American Standard (for a short time), and a limited edition 70s Reissue a few years ago. I haven’t decided which way to go yet. I’m leaning toward just swapping the neck on a Mexican Robert Cray model because I like Inca Silver and everything else about the guitar except the fretboard.

Regarding the 70s tele there are 2 things about that guitar that goes against it. 1. It’s a 70’s model so it will never command the value of a 60’s or below date. 2. I too, prefer lighter weight guitars as I think it helps with body resonance and is a plus for adding that zing to a tele. 3. Unless you change out the bridge on these guitars it’s really robs the tele of sustain. I know that you can remedy some of that with locktite on the bridge screws and stuff but even then the bridge design still affects tone in my opinion, I owned a MIJ tele custom with bigsby that was a beautiful guitar but I sold it for that very reason. I just couldn’t bond with it. Great episode. Cheers.

Very cool stuff! Can't believe how good that Dove sounds. I come from an acoustic fingerpickin' background, and Gibsons of this era are not typically the greatest in terms of sound. I've only watched a few of your videos by now, will be watching more of course, but wanted to offer some advice. You obviously know your stuff, or are willing to learn if you don't. Plus you're an excellent player! My hope is that you dig as deeply into the music part as you are into the gear part. There's a huge world of great stuff out there when you get off the beaten track, away from the Claptons and Hendrixs of the world. That's the obvious stuff. Dig into the stuff that influenced them, and who influenced those people. You'll discover people like Lonnie Johnson, who it could be argued invented the guitar solo as we know it today, and did it playing a 12-string. He's on Louis Armstrong records, the good ones from the 20's. There are lots of people like that, overshadowed by the legend of Robert Johnson, who was great and all, but just one of thousands of guys doing it, some of whom were recorded. I gravitate towards musicians like Ry Cooder, David Lindley, Richard Thompson, bands like NRBQ, XTC, Tower of Power, the Meters, pretty much anything and everything genre-wise if it's good. Right now what I'm diggin' most is some Lindley live shows from the 80's where he's doing insane Arabic sounding things to some Silvertone (he's much more than the slide player from "Runnin' On Empty"). That music? I guess it's sorta reggae/pop/roots/world? It's the playing, and the quality of the material and band... The MUSIC! Sorry, got off on a tangent there! Again, loving your channel and all the best in all you do!

Couldn't help but notice the restored Firebird bridge pickup had been replaced with a mini humbucker. The original vid had 2 Firebird pickups. Also, the SG vibrato has had the outer sleeve to the downward stringbar removed. It alleviates the harsh string break angle. Better tuning stability. I've done this on mine. Good reversible mod.

Matthew; thanks for this fabulous 2020 salvage success retrospective. You made lemonade out of an apocalyptic year! Add me to your list of interested parties to that well-played TV Yellow 1958 Les Paul Special. I can't wait to see/hear it with new frets.

Really nice to see an upload from you. I think you need to make some more lick lessons, that intro was sick. I see you added some fuzz to the bass, good decision. 2020 has certainly been a hell of a ride, and it was a hell of a journey with these amazing pieces of guitar history and your playing. Have a very Happy New Year and a great start to 2021! ✌️✌️✌️

That Hardtail is redonkulous sounding! I had forgot about that one? Amazing collection of instruments, and that ‘65 Rustverb with original speakers and tubes! I have moved guitars and amps down the line. Some for the same reason...neck and me didn’t get along? Epiphone Casino comes to mind. Some I really miss, some just an oh, well. Enjoy your channel! Happy New Year!

Truthfully all 10 of my favorites especially the Mary Kaye Strat that actually looked like a poly refinish compared to the latest refinishing that suits it the best, the '64 Firebird that looks exactly like it was custom ordered and built in Kalamazoo (a 'custom-made' plaque would be perfect!), the Gibson Explorer amp sounds incredible w/the bigger speaker, the '58 Strat hardtail w/the '64 neck and modernly loaded pickguard definitely has a nice tone... anyhoo here's to the new finds and new projects for 2021 aka two kings and a blackjack!
