2 (older) kids as well. I don’t really have a non-gaming use case or spare room in the house for a desktop PC/monitor (my wife and I just have our work laptops for work, and our iPad Pros for home computing needs). So, my setup is PS5/Steamdeck. I think if I had an office or den in the house, a gaming PC might make sense-I’ve dreamt about building one someday with my 13-year-old.

I have 3 kids (10, 8, 3), and one major pro for console gaming is couch co-op. Especially with Nintendo systems. It's really easy to pickup and play together. PC always seems to be more of a pain setting that up, and you usually don't want to huddle around a monitor.
@firestriker6846

Definitely a pain, I tend to have game nights with my friends and family and almost always have to mess with something either on the emulator or on Steam. If it's just 2 players you should be good, but anything over 3 is always a hassle.

Your impressions are out of date, friend. While couch co-op is easiest on Switch, it is more convenient on PC than it is on PS5.

@@richardhunter9779I think the only impression he made that is out of date is the "monitor" statement. Since I've built my gaming PC never once have I had it hooked up to a monitor. It's always been hooked up to my TV via HDMI, literally no different than a console, you plug in the power cord and then the HDMI cord and boom. Have a wireless mouse and keyboard and you can control everything from the comfort of your couch, chair, bed or wherever you are in the house. But with that said everything else he's said has been spot on for the most part. If you're playing anything over 2 players it's going to be a hassle and I'm talking from experience of having multiple game nights with friends and family. The only emulator that works flawlessly whenever it comes to the plug and play aspect with anything over 2 players is Redream. I don't know what they use but no matter what controller I connect to it, it automatically recognizes and maps it. PCSX2 is hit or miss with anything over 2 players and when going from a 4 player game down to a 2 player game. It's not as simple as disconnecting then reconnecting like it is in Redream or Retroarch. The SDL/ configuration tends to change depending on which controller is plugged in, so you have to play musical chairs with controllers until you find which controller the setting is configured too or you have to just reconfigure it. It's a bit annoying having to do all of that when you have a group of 8 to 15 people waiting just to play some games. Then games like Clusterpuck99 and Towerfall which sets up to 8 players have to be specially configured if it's up to 8 players. For some reason at least one of the controllers tends to disconnect after at least one round if it's connected to bluetooth. Again such a hassle, so that's the reason I got an Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch for game nights when it comes to those games specifically. Clusterpuck99 works flawlessly on the Series with 8 controllers and although Towerfall is only 6 player on Switch it stills works flawlessly.

I just discovered your channel last week. Your closing statement really connected with me as a new first time dad who has been gaming his whole life (console and PC). Having my daughter has been a blessing, but has also been the biggest challenge when it comes to being able to game. I took use gaming as a way to destress and keep my sanity. I will say as a life long PC gamer who console games, your justification to get into PC gaming is mostly valid. I will say... it is a deep rabbit hole. You alluded to how you don't like the chase of the "newest" consoles, but PC parts are even more volatile. Whatever top of the line component you buy, is considered outdated within a few months. BUT you are correct that you don't need the top of the line in-order to get into gaming. You can have the budget of an Xbox or PS5 or sometimes less and build an equivalent machine. It all really depends on how deep you want to get in it. If you have any questions feel free to send it my way! Cool channel!

New CPUs, new motherboards, faster RAM, faster SSDs and of course faster GPUs. and even when you have your PC built you'll be getting fomo thinking you haven't set it up right to get the most out of what you have. I think this is the way a lot of people will go. Pretty soon Sony will be either day and date PC with all their titles, or they'll shorten the wait to 6 months to a year. PS5 console sales are starting to become stagnant a bit. There are people who will always want the convenience and ease of a console. I sold my PS5 and series to build a PC. I'm now PC, Steam Deck, Switch, and retro consoles. It's great.

I also bought a steam deck, loved it for about a month and ended up hating having to tinker with almost every games individual settings to get it to run well, so I sold it for a Series X and love it. I'm an OLED switch owner also and have spent about 1000 hours of gaming on it since it came out and I'm still heavily invested in it. Interesting take. I went through a similar thing and found the pc route to ultimately be aggravating. There is a lot more nuance with that platform that can go wrong and it requires you to fix it. Whereas on console, you just hit play and you're off, for the most part. That being said, I'm still teetering back and forth between pc and console for some of the very reasons you mention (and then some).

I also agree man, PC is more work and chained to a desk sucks. Thats why I love my xbox series x in the living room near family.. my pc is in the basement in a corner so its not very practical. The steam deck is good for playing my PC games elsewhere in my house around family but I still use my xbox series x the most. I fear a PC might create more distraction for Julien than he wants its not as easy as consoles. Speaking from experience as I have a rig with a 3080 ti in it and 32 gb ram. I9-12900k. PC feels like always trying to keep up with tech. I think the steam deck draws most PC gamers in so they are not stuck at their desks / PCs. It allows them to play their steam library elsewhere not at the desk. I hope julien doesn't regret building a PC and finding out hes stuck as a desk even more. Julien thoughts!?? Thanks

Exactly how I feel. When I had kids was when my PC gaming went from my only way to game to maybe 25% of the time. I would rather use my PS5, Steam Deck or Switch. I'm extremely busy. I don't have time to screw around with MSI Afterburner and trying a ton of different settings in every game to find the right sweet spot and messing with fan curves and oh no my RAM is being weird now. Time to mess with timings in the bios for 3 hours. It's not worth it.

PS5 to me just takes all of that out of the question, I either pick quality mode or performance and off I go. I get it though, I have been stuck in this back and forth decision for a while now

With a computer you also get an endless list of indie games, 20-30 of them sometimes for the price of one console exclusive. Also with a computer you have emulation up to X360 or PS3. You also have the choice to play with a mouse / keyboard, gamepad, steering wheel, joystick, whatever has a usb port you can practically use. Consoles are gaming machines, computers are tools that can also be used for gaming.

As a dad to a larger family than most people in here I can say 2 kids is a breeze, especially when you have good teamwork with your spouse. I can also say I make time at the end of my day to sit down and have a few hours to enjoy my hobbies. Once the kids have gone to bed I do my thing it’s not always gaming and my wife does hers. Then we go in the room catch some time together and go to bed. Personally I don’t relate to the not having time for my hobby aspect. That being said everyone’s life is different and so some people can relate and that’s awesome. I also can’t relate to the worrying about the newest system because I don’t get the next system until way later if at all. I can say from having been around a lot of pc gamers they have a similar mindset when it comes to the next best thing. Theirs is parts though and some of those part can run you around the same as new system when it’s all said and done. I maybe the minority here but I’m still enjoying my switch and ps4. Happy gaming!

I got a 6/3/NB middle being special needs. I feel you. My setup is PC/SD/PS5/XBSX. I paid the pretty penny for the PC rig with a work bonus and moved the PC setup to the couch with a lap desk. I won’t need to upgrade parts for long while. I made the switch to PC long time ago and usually buy games when they’re on sale and never on release unless I know I will play on launch. I only turn on the PS5 for console exclusives (FF7 Rebirth). Xbox is mainly played by the oldest for Minecraft and I can play the deck while he does. Multiplayer games not so much anymore except Hell Divers 2. I’ve had Steam since the start so my library is vast and the best thing with Steam is that if Steam goes away they’ll still honor your purchase and make it available to you. There is also emulation.

I actually went the other way when I had kids. I was a hardcore PC gamer and consoles just gave me such a quick experience. It was easy and fast. For modern gaming I have a PS5, Switch, high end gaming PC, mid-range gaming laptop and Steam Deck. My gaming PC gets the least amount of use because it's much more of a commitment to play games on it. My PS5 has the most use by far, then the Steam Deck and Switch are tied and my 3DS still gets a lot of use. I truly don't understand why being a father has anything to do with not using a console... it's THE reason I started using consoles again.

The thing about why I switched to PC gaming is cause all the games are here. Easy to click and play and can play on TV and on SteamDeck for on the go. Can run emulators too and backwards compatibility isn't an issue you have to worry about. No need to hope for console manufacturer to fix broken console or hope they add a feature you want. It's been more convenient to game on PC than consoles and you get access to cheats and mods which is great. Cheats are great when you want them for some single player games. Can help bypass parts of the game you don't like while enjoying parts of the game you do like.

The great thing about pc gaming is you can upgrade as you want to . After you get to a certain point you will be good for a while and save money on games ,the hardware will be good for a while , and the amount of games available on pc is phenominal , More companies are releasing games to more platforms .Consoles are good for people who just like to plug and play it is easier less trouble shooting ect . I was pc gamer who could not afford to upgrade my pc so I gamed on consoles for a while ,but once I got things up and running it is a lot cheaper game by game . Steam has allowed me to find games on sale that i might not have tried , by purchasing a collection on sale .I am looking to buy a steam deck this year to have my collection be portable . The initial investment in buying a gaming pc can seem higher. But say you get $2000 pc, well for a console you would spend $500 on a ps5 and depending on what kind of tv you want you can easily spend at least $1500. Pc gaming gets cheaper when it comes to buying games. Steam sales happen often, you also have humble bundle, green man gaming, etc.

I am actually going the other way to console gaming, i have been a console gamer almost all my life except for a few pc games here and there age of empires roller coaster half-life 2 but it has been consoles since the N64 days. 2020 comes in and i built my pc loved it learn a lot about PC display tech etc. fast forward my daughter was born oct 2022 and now i REALLY dislike sitting at my desk to play games after being stuck to a desk the whole day, i have tried remote play a long HDMI to my living room but there is always a hurdle to overcome (game opens in the background sound is playing on my pc instead of living room tv) while the ps5 just works is always there and quick resume is THE BEST you don't get anything like that on PC (you do on the steam deck) and also i am more present on the living room instead of a corner on my bedroom. the FOMO of the next hardware also happens a lot on PC there is always that next GPU or a super cool hall effect keyboard OLED monitor with the console i feel like that is it what you get is what you get just buy the game and enjoy no need to mess with settings or terrible pc ports (looking at you Jedi Survivor). i have been trying ps5 remote play and it works ok it allows me to play on my bedroom or sometimes even on my lunch break at work i think that is a viable avenue to explore. i got the Galileo g8 controller with my iPhone 15 and also got an iPad mini to test, maybe a PlayStation portal with a Switch is the killer combo for me.

Mario, Zelda, and Metroid are the three reasons why I will ALWAYS have a Nintendo console. However, a Nintendo console will NEVER be my main console. I have always been a Playstation guy. However, I have been seriously considering making the change to PC for many of the same reasons you talk about. My fears are: I am scared that I will just play with the settings and always fixate on getting the best performance. I'm scared of the cost. I don't know if I have the time for upkeep. Those are the three main reasons why I have not made the switch yet. I believe I am beginning to see the other benefits that outweigh them.

As probably mentioned previously, the waiting for the next thing is more promimant in the PC area. You get a new GPU release every year, a new CPU , 40% more perfomance, just wait for the faster hardware. A game comes out and needs 10GB VRAM etc because of unoptomised AA garbage. Yes with PC it opens up so many genres and titles you can play, pretty much all Xbox games can be played since windows 10 I believe from the microsoft store, PS5 is now shipping titles on PC. PC can be upgraded but that feeling or next best wont be gone. My last point is that consoles you just get the game, put it in the console and play it. No need to worry about specs or overheads with software and what not + you still get physical media. Console generally last 7 years where as you would be looking at shifting your PC every 3 years unless you get top end now and can have self control. A GPU probably costs more than your ps5 now of days.. Wish I could stick to console. Just get what makes you happy.

I think handhelds & PCs is where its at, and collecting retro. I use my Series X for KZfaq/Bluray, but no gaming really. I could use an Android tv-box (or smart-tv) and a Bluray-player for that. So yeah Steam deck, Switch, Evercade, and/or older handhelds, in combo with a decent PC, is more than enough. The energy, time and money left over as a dad is limited, better use those three smart and prioritize.
@TheSniperWho
@TheSniperWho 5 ай бұрын
You don't necessarily need to collect retro gaming stuff in order to enjoy retro games. Just emulate them. EmuDeck's got that covered. The emulation experience is usually parity if not better than the original experience. There are also retro shaders in case that CRT vibe is what you're looking for. Though I can't knock collecting retro gaming stuff for the sake of collecting. In addition, in some sense it's good to own the retro stuff in case you want to contribute to archives or emulation efforts. In regards to BluRay, I have a BluRay reader and writer that I can plug into my Steam Deck Dock. Of course, you'll need to download some stuff alongside a BluRay key file but that's trivial once you start looking it all up. I've watched stuff through VLC in gaming mode and it's decent. I think the only thing to be aware of is the controller settings for VLC in gaming mode. That and if I recall correctly I ran into a weird controller bug. So it's not perfect but it can get the job done and it's not bad by any stretch of the imagination. I don't exactly remember specifics on the controller bug but I think it had something to do with being in VLC's fullscreen mode.
