Just a little video to answer questions I'm sure others had about setting the cam timing on these engines. They use friction to hold the crankshaft cam chain gear, no woodruff key.

i have to replace my timing cover due to an accident breaking the motor mount bolts off. this makes it way clear how to do it thx alot Thumps up

Exelent video , a little shaky but this is what I was loooking for ,especially where you show where the bolt goes in the crankshaft, I put the bolt on top and thats why my engine didnot start. I hope I didnot bend some valves. thanks a lot.

In my case, the car was an insurance buyback from a coworker. $500 for a 2005 mazda with a hydro locked motor is the _ONLY_ reason I have this car. It's actually hers now as I signed over the title on it. Compared to a Honda or Toyota, the mazda motor is a POS. Torque to yield bolts are nice, but I thought I was going to break something doing the balancer bolt. Stress tested my 24B snap on breaker bar that's for sure.

I had a question about the valve timing, when you set the bar in the camshaft slots, how do you know the camshafts are turned the correct direction, you can turn the camshaft 180 degrees and still insert the bar, yet different valves are opening?

Do u know if u can use the ford pistons in the mazda 3. I am using a the ford 2.3 block and a mazda 3 head. The pistons on the mazda 3 have valve reliefe on them and the ford does not

+hho man It will work fine, it will slightly raise your compression ratio (which is a good thing) if needed you can use a thicker gasket to compensate and give clearance that will bring your compression ratio back down too and help it burn the 87 octane.

I'm working on the same engine out of a B2300..I have to say, what a poor design! I mean scary knowing if your harmonic balancer isn't tight enough your timing will slip. Isn't this motor non-interference?
