I have a stihl ms250 but couldn't say no to the mac when I found it!

The Pro Mac 700's are light, very powerful, and easy to work on also. Their are not a lot of them around, as they were used in both commercial logging and heavy duty firewood processing, and were just used up. If I just had only one saw, the Mac 700 would be the one. I have used mine with a 32 inch bar, and the saw handles it just fine, but the tree's I have are smaller, and even the 28" bar is more than needed, but the saw has perfect balance with that combination, so that is what I use.

Amazing how many saws were based on the 1-10. Hard to beat good engineering !

I dont have any info on how to date the McCullochs, but the earliest models dont have a chain brake and the muffler is exposed. The later ones have the brake and the side cover covers the muffler. These are real powerful, fast cutting saws

My 700 is completely stock. They are just real performers. I am not aware of any problems common to that series of saws, as the forerunners were made quite a few years before the 700, and any problems were corrected if any before this 700 was released. Good find !

The Mac 1-42 was a common saw in its day, and they made the same basic model for many years, just changing the model number , like 1-52 etc. They are straight forward to work on, and parts availability is OK. Unless it has been abused, most of these and similar models dont require much in repairs. If you find a PRO MAC 700, you will probably have to pay a fair amount to get it. They were a huge seller for the commercial market, and were mostly used up. So the ones that are left can be real beaters, so be careful. There are still some nice ones out there, but usually expensive. They are real performers!

I run 3/8"-.050 chisel bit skip tooth oregon chain on a 28" McCulloch-Windsor bar. Works great.

You can adjust the oiler on the Pro Mac 700 by removint the cover off the oil tank. The pump in in plain sight, and there is a small bolt on the lower part for the adjustment. Screw iy in for less oil.

Centrifugal force keeps the starter dogs away from the starter cup when the saw is running, but fall back and catch as the engine speed drops. Pulling out the starter rope is done to prevent damage to the starter mechanism and makes the rope last longer. One of my old Stihl's does the same thing, but the newer ones have a different starter mechanism that prevents it from happening.

There were minor changes on the Mac 700's over their long production run. Mine is the first model year.

My parts manual shows them as 4mmx16mm, which is metric.

The first models of the Pro Mac 700 did not have a chain brake. I have some original brochures that show it without it. It wasn't long though, that the saws were modified to come with one.

All no brakes

I don't have a 7-10, but I know for sure my PM700 is original with no brake. I am the second owner, and the saw when received is exactly the way it came new. My original parts book also shows no brake on the early production models. My PM 55 also has no brake, as does my SP 80. My PM 800 parts saw has a chain brake on it though. It is interesting how the saws evolved.

I prefer no brake saws !

Mr. Eagle eye, yes that is a vintage McCulloch promotional cap, I like to have old stuff to go with my old stuff. I will at some point run one of my old Homelites on the channel

There are many ways to sharpen a chain, but the fast and simple way I do it is with a PHERD file tool. I have two of them, one for 3/8 and 404" and the other for 3/8" low profile chain.These tools are for round tooth chain, as that is all I use.The PHERD file tool cuts both the tooth and the raker at the same time. Most of these are branded Stihl, and are sold at the dealers for about $45. Since I am not a pro logger, and dont use square cut chain, this system works very fast and efficiently, and you can take it with you. The Mac 700 is such a smooth runner I dont need em ! If I were running my XL !@'s I would need them for sure.
