It's been years since I destroyed, I mean removed walls for a remodel. I used to do it pretty much the same way Donavan is here, but my uncle showed me this cool trick. He would knock two holes in a piece of drywall and insert these 2 funky tools he designed. They were 2 strips of 2" wide by 2' long by 3/8ths thick flat bar that he heated and bent into a U. He would knock a few holes across from each other about 16 or more inches apart with has hammer. Insert the tools and pull both at the same time. This brought down the drywall in large pieces which were far better stacking and less trips to the trailer. It took some trial, but worked very well...

No way you could be “board” watching these videos! I like it when Matt “lumbers” along too! Hopefully they will take some pics and “frame” them. Did you notice the door that was “ajar”? Donavan is kinda like the bread maker who “worked because he kneaded the dough”! So much talent, I bet he could even “turn a car into a driveway”!

I think Donovan likes the destructive aspect of a job as well as the remodel. Normally he's sarcastic as well as focused on the task at hand, but when it's time to tear out someone else's work [that is often rather lame] he's just a chipper human being.

Donovan reminds me of me when I used to insulate houses. The guys I worked with threw a fit when I would work with fiberglass in short sleeves in the summer. All you have to remember is 2 things, 1) Always rinse from top to bottom on your arms and 2) Never wear a silk shirt for a few days after because if you missed any glass shards silk will find them.

Some might consider saying “a big sledgehammer” redundant. Because a sledgehammer is a big hammer. But it’s really wrong to refer to one that way. Sledgehammers aren’t sized small, medium, and large. They are actually sized in weight. Two pounds being the smallest I personally have seen. They go up in two pound increments. For example 2#, 4#, 6#, 8# 10# and so on. A 20# sledgehammer is largest that I personally have had the pleasure of swinging. Now that is a big sledgehammer.

@firesurfer 2 жыл бұрын
If you have a compressor and cheap labor, you can blow the nails out. If you have a teenager, that's fine. As long as they can be trusted to not shoot their eyes out. (the nozzle goes over the nail and gets blown out backwards, put the 2x over a bucket with water and sand) If not, they can just chop off the ends with a chopsaw and just use them for fill in odd spots.
@josephbohme7917
@josephbohme7917 2 жыл бұрын
Demo saving materials is only effective if you have free labor or say men working at $16 or so. Tools must be available and any molding & 2x should be pulled free and nails strip separately later. A general or contractor making >$70 should not be doing demo. It is not skilled labor and he cannot be used to save a hundred dollars worth of material per 2 hours- it is a wash. Saving money as a homeowner means you do the demo and they will hate you becaue it is gravy money. It must be agreed beforehand. It must not cause delays. Becuse the owner wants to save it is okay but the schedules have to be clear. getiing a pile far away outside is the reason not to save money, but to allow new workspace.

I am enjoying the project, and i am not opposed to new construction. However, as we all become more aware of waste in everything--including construction--i watch this demo and all that crap going into the dumpster/landfill/earth, i wonder about how to balance our needs vs the planet. All those materials (wood, plaster, etc.) were used for a fraction of their service life, all for a bigger room. I wish Matt & Donavan had a thought to share about minimizing their waste.

In my part of the UK, there are quite a few wood recycling projects (both commercial and community based) that will collect all kinds of wood then resell, repurpose or recycle. Best case it's resold as lumber, worst case it's burned for energy - but at least none goes to landfill. They charge for pickup but make the charge less than the cost of the skip you would have used otherwise.
