Learn the basics of pressing seed oils at home to have a sustainable source of fat for your family. We homesteaders like to be self-sufficient, but unless you raise pigs (for lard) or a dairy cow (to make butter), chances are you aren't producing a lot of fat sources on your homestead.
Join me for today's podcast with Bevin Cohen from ‪@SmallHouseFarm‬as we discuss the basics of pressing seed oils at home.

This podcast topic is fascinating!!! I can not consume oils unless cold pressed. We are blessed to live on 10 acres so I see big seed crops in my future!!!❤️

I watched on KZfaq. I saw another interview he did. Very informative. I was concerned about using a crank because i was worried about running outta steam. My concerns were answered and i think a hand crank would be right for me. Thank you for always doing the deep dive to get the info out. A little side note, i LOVE your mayo recipe! It emulsifies perfectly!

I think many people my age (GenX) remember when we were growing up and butter was the devil (and eggs) and you would die young of a heart attack unless you cut them from your diet and used margarine instead to stay healthy. I think it goes without saying that any food processed using chemicals are not going to be as good for you as naturally unadulterated whole foods. Still, as with all food, moderation. This was an interesting discussion, use your own judgement and do the research if you're skeptical, too many people run with whatever the FDA/USDA etc claim as gospel at the moment and never take a minute to investigate. This is great information for people that would like to experiment with home extraction.

Though I usually listen to you on Spotify instead of here, I wanted to hop over and say this was absolutely fascinating! I’ve been mostly trying to avoid seed oils for inflammation, but his explanation about the processing method makes sense. I’m going to have to look into this further - we’re tiny yard suburban homesteaders and DIY animal fat sources are out, but I wouldn’t mind growing my favorite flower in my yard and being able to source oil from it! Even if my sunflower success rate has been sad so far. 😅

I got so excited when you asked the question about Canola oil - Finally, the history came out to dispel the bad rap that Canola oil AKA rape seed has gotten. I grew up knowing the history because I come from that part of the world. I currently buy a cold pressed, Non GMO canola oil from Northern Prairie Family Farms in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They do ship to USA. It is quite good. I had heard an interview with him just recently and this one filled in some of gaps. Planning on trying this. Thank you both!

I’m new to seed oil production for my home and then some once I get the hang of it. Have 2 of Bevin’s books and they are great. Lots of history information and guidance. Have more to discover, just popped in to the channel to check it out, and ended up subscribing. From southern parish Acadiana area of Louisiana

I am very much looking forward to having my own chickens someday, and am already planning on supplementing their feed with black oil sunflower seeds (among other things), and to be able to press the sunflower oil for my own use and still be able to feed my birds with the seed cake is exciting!

In France gmos are not allowed. Canola is unknown. We call it ( or have developped a variant) colza. It’ s actually rich in omega 3. If you buy organic, it won’t ever be with solvents. I’m pretty sure the EU health regulation don’t allow solvents i food anyway

I don’t think the fad against seed oil has taken here in Europe... where we don’t allow the worst chemicals, we know pressed oils are the only valid ones, and we have the medditeranean diet and in France people live to 95 pretty healthy that eat everything and not always in moderation ;) I will say, This healthy old age in Europe trend is disapearing and i think pollution ans sugar are the causes

So just to disagree there's nothing inherently unsafe in a GMO variety as far as human consumption. As someone who has made gmos, it's a very precise technology, and DNA is DNA, and proteins are basically the the same no matter what organism you eat. GMO technology gets a lot of bad rap because most varieties have come through big ag and are tied to pesticide use. But gmo is just a technique, it can be used to make nontoxic, disease resistant, or more nutritious crops. So rejecting the technique just restricts your ability to adapt to climate change and other shocks to the food system. That said, I appreciate the focus on seed oils and the issue of producing oils and fats in a homestead setup. It's definitely something I want to try.
@SmallHouseFarm
@SmallHouseFarm 11 ай бұрын
This is a great comment! The way I look at it, is not that gmos themselves are inherently bad.. but for example, some of these crops are modified to resist herbicide.. which means that those crops are typically treated heavily with herbicides to control weeds.. and this is where I have concern.. both herbicide and fertilizer runoff from large farms have shown to be very problematic for our environment. We could also dig into the patenting of seeds etc, but this probably isn't;'t the forum for that ;) Glad you enjoyed the conversation on seed oils!

there is obviously a conflict of interest at play here since you have "made GMOs" look up the connection between GMOs and autoimmune disease, which has sky rocketed with their use. our body attacks what it doesnt recognize ,what isnt natural.
