Is it possible to order a complete meal in a Tapas bar or must you go to a different sort of place? Also, I know how important olive oil is in Spanish cousine, but I can only eat very small amounts of it, due to digestion problems. Is it considered the height of bad manners to ask for a dish without oil (I'm not suggesting that a dish would be prepared separately). I'm referring to food where oil is added prior to serving, as on salad for example. Perhaps you could give me a phrase in Spanish,that I could use, which would express my apology for the request to omit the oil and my gratitude for so doing. Thank you so much. Marge

Good question, closing time in most restaurants is nearer to 3:30 than 4. If you arrive near closing time you will make everyone feel uncomfortable. I would not arrive after 3:30. In any case, the guys at the restaurant will let you know if you are too late.

A recent law allows you to do that. Bear in mind most "menús del día" include some kind of drink.

Hi Ronny, there's no fixed rate. As waiting staff earn proper wages (albeit small), tipping is Spain is seen as a way of rewarding good service. What we usually do is round up the change. So, say your bill is 18€. You pay with a 20€ note and leave the change. For as long as you had good service.

@@tuckercarson3187 there is a magic event called "almuerzo", which happens between breakfast and (late) lunch time. So you will always find a bar opened where you can feast on some delicious tapas (snacks, including the classic potato omelette). Have a great trip!

I know it will be cool in Spain then but not as cold as where I live in Canada - an average day is minus 18 degrees C and it dips as low as minus 30.
