In the Fellowship of the Ring, Galadriel's gift to Gimli may seem a thoughtful and kind gift on the surface, but actually has a more in-depth meaning. @@Rensune still is practiced today one of my friends who is now a Navy Seal carrys a few strands of his wife's hair on deployment instead of his wedding ring because if something where to happen to him he didnt want the enemy getting a hold of something as precious as his wedding ring instead carry's something equally as precious to him but not to the enemy.

My wife did that when I went to Afghanistan. I love Gimli. As a kid I always thought Aragorn or Legolas were cooler but as an adult, Gimli is by far my favorite character 😁

This is something I'm beginning to realise about Tolkien's work - Everything means something within the wider legend. There are, of course, mysteries which are left open, but there are no meaningless gestures or plot points which do not add to the myth.

I remember Gimli is so taken by Galadriel's beauty that he was ready duel anyone who says her beauty can be surpassed by anyone with the exception of Arwen. So pure was his admiration that Galadriel saw which likely made her decide she was worthy of a gift she deprived one of the greatest of her people

it's really cute and super sweet when you think about it, really. Feanor wanted the hairs out of domination, but if you take it further, the Silmaril's would eventually lead to the creation of Sauron, and so if Galadriel had given even a single hair, one could say she could have been corrupted herself, after having a direct hand in the darkness it wrought. whereas Gimli simply admired Galadriel's beauty in a way I think most would find so adorable and sweet. almost like a 4 or 5-year-old child who has a genuinely innocent crush on one of his older adult sister's friends. it's sweet, adorable, and gushy. despite knowing that it can never be, and thinking Galadriel would never give him her hair, she surprised him even further by giving him three, showing him that she is even beyond his own imagination of her. Meanwhile, from Galadriel's end, it is perfect. the dwarf wanted to use the hair as a peace offering, and a symbol of friendship, not even knowing or probably even understanding the magical significance and power those three small hairs have. he is perfectly ignorant. and even if he were to find out, to him it is more important as a symbol than as any kind of weapon or tool. because it is proof that even that which seems impossible to attain, can sometimes be acquired simply through asking.

Gimli asked for but one hair, Galadriel gifted him with three because of how he requested one of her and was not greedy nor did he ask out of coveting her hair strand. He asked with eloquence and most of all, sincerity.

The moment was a foreshadowing of the friendship of Gimli and Legolas, and the easing of the resentments between Elves and Dwarves. Dwarves value wealth and the things created by their own hands. So for a dwarf to be smitten by the beauty of an Elf and to pay such respect and devotion to someone so dear to the heart of the Elves was a compliment whose depth was shocking. Galadriel saw a chance to bring Elves and Dwarves closer together and she took it.

I really like how it was done in the film. It would have looked awkward to show on screen because individual hairs do not show up well on film. But the way Gimli recounts it still touches my heart. Especially how he phrases it...”I asked for a single strand of hair from her golden hair...she gave me three”

Marveryn From what I remember, his spirit is detained in halls of Mandos unable to reincarnate in Valinor until he 1) repents his evil deeds sincerely or 2) final battle dagor dagorath comes and he is offered the Silmarills back which he uses to restore damage Melkor did to the two trees of Arda.

I recently rewatched Fellowship and I love how the movie portrays the gift. They don't SHOW the hairs. Because how could a camera pick that up in such a way as to properly convey that without some weird trick or extreme focus? No. It wasn't practical to show the gift. Instead, as Gimli and Legolas are paddling away in the boat, they employed a narration device and had Legolas ask what gift Gimli asked of Galadrial. He tells Legolas, his voice practically shaking in awe and wonder (kudos to John Rys-Davies skill!) as he recounts that he asked for but one of her hairs, and she gave him three. And Legolas - who surely must have known of Feanor, smiled. They were companions before and trusted each other in battle. But I think THAT is the moment when their true friendship was kindled.

While everyone knew of Feanor, the episode where he asked her for the hair was likely a private matter only told as metaknowledge (for the reader). Legolas and Gimli actually become good friends after meeting Galadriel, as he took Gimli with him exploring the Golden Wood, to everyone's surprise. By the time of the movie scene where he says he cannot translate the laments for Gandalf, they had been doing this for about 2 months.

It is such a shame that this scene was not included in the final cut. To me, it is one of the most beautiful, and touching scenes in literature or cinema. I cry like a baby just recalling it to memory.

For me, LOTR was the greatest novel ever written. To think that people found it even more so; to learn the languages, is beyond belief. For Christopher Lee to keep reading it every year. I read it front to back for a few years except for Tom Bombadil. Magic.

You could remove it from the story and nothing significant in regards to the plotline would be lost.

There are so many details in Tolkien's stories and specific things that either make you want to learn more about everything or simply make you sit back and stare in amazement at his work. This kind of detail makes the scene in the movie or in the book so much more beautiful, understanding that Gimli indeed brought together the schism between the elves and dwarves to close simply for his genuine respect for the beauty of Galadriel, putting aside his wrothness and anger of the elves in order to express love and wonder for her.

Because he asked her to. It shocked the other elves that she did it. But remember that Galadriel was a Noldor among a population of "dark elves" and a few Grey Elves. They would have known of the affinity of the Noldor for dwarves, particuarly the Longbeards, but to see it in action was unprecedented. Galadriel, of course, had spend a long time living in Eregion and had close friendship with Gimli's ancestors in Moria.

I was never really weirded out by gimli's request. I always found it charming and very sweet. This dwarf who would always be the first to state his dislike of elves was enchanted by one of the more fairer beings of his age. I would imagine he would gasp with his heart would be subdued: as he had never seen anyone like this before

I think at least in a way there is a type of innocence and humility from his request. He didn't ask it openly he had to be commanded to ask for it. Also he legit seems to apologize when asking for it, as if he knows he shouldn't but feels it rude to not give an honest answer. Finally, he didn't want it for any reason other than to look upon it and fondly and remember the day when he saw that which was fairest. He wasn't trying to do anything with it, eventually because it is so impressive and splendid it becomes a family heirloom but his intentions seem to be pure and good. What a legend. You're too beautiful, I don't want any presents.

Actually I believe it is Galadriel who has changed. She was always haughty and aloof, but after she was shamed by the desire she had for the ring (in front of Frodo), she "diminished" and was therefore more inclined to give Gimli his gifts

I marvel at the quality and care that goes into these videos. I particularly enjoy that they reference source material. The watcher in the water was no monster as seen in the movies, but a loyal guardian of Moria. If friends aproach peacefully(and quietly) entering with the pasword, he sleeps. If enemies aproach and try to force their way( which would be noisy) the guardian awakes and defends. If he is not suficient for the task he is to bring down the tunnel and seal the entrance so to halt an invading army. Remenber, at first he gently pulled Frodo in( he wanted to get a closer look at the strange group, and out of all of them hobit s were the more obscure), then he was attacked, and he responded. The opened door also gave the guardian a sense of urgency! His origin story is an entierly diffrent mater...

Very true, but Gimli probably didnt know about the likeness of her hair to the two trees, since it happened in Valinor long before he was born, indeed in a time when the race of dwarves did not yet exist. I see it as an admiration of the Lady and a show of good will between the two races that had been at odds since the slaying of Thingol. The asking and giving of this intimate gift shows great will to mend this rift between dwarves and elves, from both of them. Galadriel is very friendly to Gimli from the beginning.

This could be an interesting idea for a video, but I've played with the idea of Gimli being the "warrior-poet" of the books. He doesn't speak much, but he can get really poetic. This scene, the scene where he describes the Glittering Caverns. I always loved how he responded when Eomer, in RoTK, says he finds Arwen more beautiful. Something like, "You love the twilight, while I love the morning" but way more poetically stated. I know Aragorn, and the hobbits are singers, yet Legolas almost always gets to the point, but Gimli... He's a Dwarven word-smith. Even Galadriel says so.

"Feanor's lust for wealth"...the way you said it, people who haven't read Silmarillion might think he was running around robbing people. He never lusted for wealth - he had already had all the wealth he needed, being the high king of Noldor. He lusted for knowledge and creation above all. He didn't let Valar destroy the Silmarili because he thought he wouldn't survive their destruction. About Galadriel: she didn't want to give a single hair to Feanor, yet she decided to follow him from Valinor to Middle Earth even though Valar told them not to go? How strange was that?

This whole Galadriel, hair and Fëanor thing is strange to me. First, it's so out of character to ask the daughter of someone you don't like a hair and worse to beg 3 times, Fëanor was proud and a proud person would not do that. And second, it contradicts how Galadriel was described in The Lord of the Rings, in The Fellowship of the Ring we are told that her hair is deep gold. We also know that Tolkien was a perfectionist and wanted consistency in his works so I doubt that something in the Unfinished Tales would have more importance than what was already wrote and published in LOTR, (maybe that's why Christopher Tolkien didn't include this version in The Silmarillion).

@@krozas5187from your comment you have read Unfinished Tales and therefore know that Tolkien repeatedly rewrote the story of Galadriel's life and connection with Celeborn and their tale is perhaps the most convoluted of any. Christopher Tolkien is on record as saying there are multiple versions of the Silmarillion.

This is so beautiful to me because she's not contributing one hair to the pledge of good will between the mountain and the wood, she believes in Gimli's intent 3 hairs worth--Mending the hostilities between the elves and dwarves. Galadriel had the power to defend Lothlorien from evil, but also the power to mend great rifts between two peoples. Power indeed!!

There is Another way of reading this - Galadriels denial to Feanor can be seen as pride, a mortal sin in Tolkien's catholic view. In granting Gimli his wish, and add more to it, she shows that she has grown beyond this pride, and is therefor forgiven her past sins. This, together with her refusel of the One Ring gives her entry to Valinor. She has repented and grown beyond her youthful sins, and is absolved and welcome to paradise.

Galadriel was wise and could see that Gimli wasn´t in all like Feanor, she oversee the true hidden darkness within him before even Melkor/Morgoth unleashed it later, so that´s how she refused him, but on the Dwarf in other hand, she saw his true golden heart despite the usual gruffer outer stereotype that always made conflict between Elves and Dwarves, so she finished the feud once and for all with that gift. It was like karma, and I guess that also helped her a lot so the Valar finally unlifted for her the forbidding to go back to Valinor and Aman.

I think it's because Feanor was like one of those charismatic people you simply have to admire because of their genius and greatness, no matter whether you find them particularly likable or not...like Alexander the Great or Michelangelo, for example.

No Gimli would not know the subtle personal history of Faenor & Gladriel or even anything like it, the Noldor were as a group under Faenor's kingship characters of first order importance in a story that was older than then all of Dwarven history and when Faenor asked for her hair it happened in Valimar thousands of years beforehand. The Noldor were exiles and for all his genius Faenor was not a good king and he brought his people to grief, in his haste to reclaim the silmarls from Morgoth he initiated the only battle of elves against elves known latter as "The Kin Slaying". No, the long and tragic history of the Noldor is not a thing that would have been known by Gimli, Gloin's son. As to why he named one hair it is a simple thing to answer: Galadriel was a 3 generation elf, she had lived in the immortal lands of the gods for millennia, she was a queen & bore 1 of the 3 elvin rings of power- if you met this I believe 20,000 year old not human woman, more beautiful than any person you have ever seen, possessed of a great store the power that Iluvatar assigned to his first children you might be awestruck as well

vitamindubya its a parallel from classic tales and mythology for the knight to request a boon or gift from his lady he adored. Many times the relationship was romantic, however it isn’t required. The idea was the knight would look upon the boon and gain strength in his resolve to keep going. The boon could be a necklace, a scarf, or even strands of hair. Tolkien was almost guaranteed to have read this type of story given his fascination with old tales.

@@Phoenix_254 That's exactly it. Gimli sees himself as Galadriel's champion immediately after receiving her gift. Note that he never hesitates to respond to her being slandered by Eomer and Wormtongue in the books, though he forgives the former afterwards.

He is totally taken by her beauty and blurbs something cute instead if asking for something useful. Galadriel acts as a kinder assessor of the Dwarves in the conversation with the Fellowship, even using the Dwarf names for Moria and the springs near the Mirrormere. She alone in the room remembers Beleriand and good times with Eregion's Noldor Elves (Celeborn likely disagrees). She had been unfairly slandered by outsiders as a witch, with Lothlorien named the Dwimmerdorne (Witch's forest) by Eomer and his ancestor Eorl (luckily Felarof the horse knew better). So Gimli sees this tall, beautiful woman with radiance and grace, the opposite of what people have said about her.

" 4:52 Feanor of a wiser and more divine being? " More divine indeed but true wisdom escaped him as seen by his actions. An unrelenting need for the knowledge of creation of " things" ie the Silmarils , through Aule was his and his Sons ( and many others) undoing. Galadriel however was a student of Yavanna ( and yes Aule as well ) , but she valued living things, and her wisdom proved great. Isn't it interesting , beautiful created things like the Silmarils became a focus provoking pride, greed and violence for their inspired creator. So was it a worship of the living things , that inspired wisdom for Toilkien as a writer of his works.As opposed to the worship of a mimicry of that life. Sauron too was a great master of making things a Maiar of Aule. But his works as well drove him to a single minded obsession with the One Ring.

Giving Gimli the three hair Galadriel gave him the means to go to Valinor. The three hairs gave him the light of the Threes and the Valar could not deny entering to the elves, not even to three hairs of an elf. Even more if the hair was imbued by the light of the Trees. And they could not separate what was freely given and accepted because this would have prevented the Firstborns from ending their journey in the Eternal Land. Gimli doesn't ask for the Galadriel's hairs, he is just compelled in revealing his desire for them after he refuses to demand something. In fact, he refuses to ask for something because he believes, rightfully, it is wrong to ask for the hair and he is not interested in anything else. This integrates nicely with the Tolkien theme of people being given what they desire only when they decide to renounce to it 1) Ulmo, when he creates the Dwarves renounce them and set to destroy them to be faithful to Eru Iluvatar and Eru stop him and grant him his wish. 2) The sons of Feanor going to war against everyone to get the Silmarils, ending with the Silmarils but unable to hold them (because they are now impure and cannot hold their light) The theme is archetypal: some things cannot be obtained with your own efforts, they cannot be demanded, they can only be freely given.

It was believed that Galadriel used her high status among the Elves to request this special permission for Gimli, as he likely set the hairs in imperishable stone and left them in Erebor beside the Arkenstone.

Feanor was never the High King of the Noldor in the time of the Trees. That would be his father Finwe, who was killed at the same time as the Trees and the theft of the Silmarils. The High Kingship would have passed to Feanor , but the title was actually vacant as Feanor led his sons to Middle Earth, dying almost as soon as he landed after fighting Balrogs. When Fingolfin finally crossed the Helacraxe and met up with Maedhros (after he was rescued by Fingon) , the latter formally gave up his claim to kingship.
