Within the world of Middle-earth, there are many Elven cultures and kindreds that influence the Elven characters. Tolkien masterfully crafted these houses to be diverse and important to the stories and characters within the legendarium. Thank you all so much for watching, I hope you all enjoyed this video! Let me know your thoughts, and I’ll see you all again next week! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

I'm rereading the silmarillion now after years and it's making me angry... Like how an elf can be, Silvan, Umayar, Calaquendi, and Teleri.... There's way to may distinctions made among elves.... Like how if they started the journey to Aman they are one type, but if they started and didn't finish, they're a different type than if they did finish, but if they never started the journey at all, that's a different type. And how each distinction has a name in common speech and in both elvish languages, like how green elves are also know as Laiquiendi and how the silmarillion switches between languages without rhyme or reason.... So confusing

The elves have a very unique "feeling" attached to them. It's somewhat of a mix of the feelings related to Ancient stories(from Egypt and Mesopotamia for example), Biblical stories, Nordic stories and Celtic stories. It's not the theme or the appearance, it's the feeling you get when you read about their past and their origins. At least for me, it's one of the most brilliant parts of Tolkien's work: he was able to create his own feeling atmosphere for the people and the culture he created(most notably with the elves, but with the other races as well)

@ JP Olivetree , I understand you. It is a feeling that you cannot quite put into words adequately. They are so pure and they are immortal,unable to be assailed by sickness or disease,yet, they may be slain,and as the herald of Manwe said to the Noldor as they fled Valinor.."Ye have spilled the blood of your kindred unrighteously,and have stained the land of Aman.For blood ,ye shall render blood,and beyond Aman ye shall dwell in Death`s shadow.For Eru appointed to you to die not in Ea,and no sickness shall assail you,yet slain ye may be,and slain ye shall be,by weapon and by torment and by grief". The Noldor ,like Fingolfin,Galadriel,Turgon and Fingon almost (to me) seem to be real historical figures. The writing of Tolkien is so beautifully written ,and his world ,so real and like a Mythology of the Norse, Celts and other Pagan mythos, that I ,in a way want it to be REAL!! Am I close to hitting at your feeling?

The House of the Macleod, Castle Dunvegan, Isle of Skye, Scotland. The Faery Flag, a silken banner gifted to Clan Macleod by a fae people. Tall, fair, magical. A woman of this fae married a laird. But as her husband began to age towards death she asked that she be allowed to return to her own folk. Her husband, sad and sorrowing, relented. A large retinue of the castle rode out as her escort. They came to a stone bridge, still called today, The Fairy Bridge. A great host of her people could be see approaching the other side. Tall and all as fair as she. The two groups met in the middle of the bridge. The laird was gifted the silken banner. He was told that it would bring the Clan Macleod victory in dire need three times. Years later a child was born to the castle. The nanny approached the nursery to hear someone singing a beautiful lullaby. It was a stranger she had never seen before. Tall and very beautiful. Legend has it that it was" The Fairy Wife of the Macleod." During WW ll, some men from the Isle of Skye joined the air force. The present Laird of MacLeod gifted each of the men with a picture of the Fairy Flag to carry with them. Not a one of them was lost in battle. They returned safe to Skye.

I think that the last words written about Elu Thingol after his slaying in the Silmarillion is one of the most heartbreaking things that I have ever read. He was alone among his people in that he was the only of elf of Beleriand among the Moriquesdi Teleri to have seen the light of the Two Trees, to join with the Ainur and have a child that had a child of triple blood and, last thing he did was set his hands on the greatest work of Dwarves and Elves....the Nauglamir and a Silmaril. The end of Thingol and Melian was a real tear jerker. .....and these tales speak of them no more.

Not only they're masters of the bow but masters of spears, arts, craftsmanship, and master shipbuilders. There are 3 Elven clans in Tolkien's Earth (Universe) - 1. The Vanyar - The smallest group but the fairest and the royalty of all the Elves. They've mostly gold/blond hair. Also their love of the art of poetry and they're masters of spears. 2. The Noldor - The Deep Elves or Deep knowledge. The 2nd largest group but they're the master craftsmen and loremasters due of their love of knowledge and wisdom. They've mostly dark hair. 3. The Teleri - The last and largest group. They're called Lindar (Singer) due of their love of music and they're freelance and hidden away from earthly problems. The Teleri have several subgroups - The Falmari (Sea Elves), the Sindar (Grey Elves), the Nandor later the Laiquendi (Green Elves) and Silvan Elves. They've mostly grey or silver hair or sometimes dark...

Those from Aman are called the Calaquendi - High Elves - The Elves of Light. Elves who have seen and held the lights of the 2 trees. While most of the Teleri group and some Noldor who were left behind they are 2 branches. They are the Umanyar (Not of Aman) and the Avanyar/Avari (The Unwilling, those who didn't listened to Olmë and stayed behind). Those in Middle Earth are calles the Moriquendi - The Elves of Darkness. The utter complexity of the Houses of the Elves I find to quite admire and really love to study. My most favorite house would probably have to be the rather infamous one: the Noldor. While some from that particular house may not be so good ( *cough* Fëanor and his sons *cough*), I do not believe that the actions of a few should really make you view the entire House in a negative light. I quite admire their extreme greatness in the art of Crafting and Smithing, and they truly gave some of the greatest and most iconic artifacts and tools in all of Middle-Earth and Fantasy in general (at least imo. And the one most notable for these artifacts and tools is Fëanor of course, but I respect his creations but not the misguided Elf he indeed was). But that is just me! :)
@kyomademon453
@kyomademon453 5 жыл бұрын
Feanor wasnt misguided, the silmarillion even says he barely let anyone influence him because he was so driven and strong-willed, his demise was that he became arrogant and proud because of his great skill, he died because he went alone to chase morgoth and died surrounded by balrogs(which he killed many) and on top of that his body bursted into flames after he died, he was by far the best elf in middle earth only seconded by his half-brother fingolfin

@@kyomademon453 That is rather true. I kinda see his final actions that lead to his demise at the hands of the Balrogs of Morgoth as being rather misguided *by* his arrogance and pride regarding his greatest creations (those being the Silmarils). But that is just my own thoughts on the very fascinating and complex character of Fëanor. Yet I cannot argue with Tolkien's own brilliant words on his traits and demise, so I guess that was a bit of a mistake on my part. Thanks for pointing that out, fellow Tolkienite! :)

@@silverdragon710 i think they are the closest to the valars so that makes them almost divine. they aren't touch by greed or power because in a way they accepted the world (the valar's creation) as it is for both its sadness and beauty and it gives them the ability to see more than regular elves (galadriel can see the future of middle earth). Hey everyone, I hope you all enjoyed the video! I just wanted to clear up something that may have been speculation on my part. While Annatar, the Lord of Gifts (Sauron), appeared to be a fair emissary of the Valar (a servant of Aulë specifically), it may have been that he never actually claimed to be one of the Vanyar during his deception. However, from most appearances of Annatar and what we know of him, it would make sense for him to appear to be one of the Vanyar. But this may have just been speculation on my behalf. As he claimed to be a servant of Aulë, it may have been that he disguised himself as one of the Noldor instead. I also went ahead and revised the title and playlist to reflect "Clans" rather than "Houses" to be more accurate to what things are represented in these types of videos. Thank you all for watching, I'll leave any more corrections that are needed within this comment.

Men of the West I have a theory request for you. What if King Arvedui had listened to the Prophecy of Malbeth and the Kingdom of Arthedain/Arnor survived the destruction of Angmar. This is my favorite what if scenario of Middle Earth because it provokes so many questions. What would this mean for the Hobbits if men repopulated Arnor around the Shire? Would the Arnor and Gondor have reunited sooner? What would Aragorn be like? And most of all where were the Wizards during the fall of Arnor as they had been in ME for a while by then. Why would Gandalf go to such length to save Gondor, yet all of the wizards not intervene to save Arnor? I would love to see this as a video largely because I have been searching for answers since I began following your videos. I hope this would interest you. Respectfully, Frank.

Another great video yoystan! Now I’ve never really been concerned with the business aspect of youtube myself especially in the Lotr section of it but seeing as you only post once a week (which I am not complaining about one bit) and the surprisingly lowering amount of viewship (which I find astonishing as your content truely is incredibly and I believe your videos grasp the feel of Tolkien amazingly) are you able to comfortably live off of youtube? I do not wish for a direct number as that is your business and not mine. I only wish to see if what you make off youtube is enough for a happy life. Best regards!

This is a nice video! Little correction though - it's not reported that Maglor died, so technically Celebrimbor wasn't the only survivor of Fëanor's house after the first age. And: it would be great if you could share the sources of the fanarts you used in this video, they are really beautiful and I'd love to find the artists and write them some comments as well if possible. 😊👍

Thank you for posting this! I really enjoyed it, and I love how well researched it is! The only intellectual discussion I can really offer is that, personally, I would argue that Legolas and Thranduil are more Sindarin than later Teleri, (such as the Silvan they ruled,) as Thranduil's father Oropher is described as a "Sindarin lord of Doriath." (I believe that's in the Peoples of Middle Earth, but it might be in the Book of Lost Tales, so don't quote me on the source! LOL!) There are also hints, (although never any outright statement) that Oropher may have been distantly related to Thingol. (This may be why, in Lothlorien, Legolas proclaims "I am a kinsman here." As a relation to King Thingol he would also be related to Lord Celeborn.) Nonetheless, as you said, both Elves have both Teleri and Sindarin in their bloodlines, so it's a bit of a toss up, really. LOL!

I'm actually not going to comment on the breakdown of the lore this time, because it was as usual, brilliant. I wanted to drop a line instead to say how much I appreciate your anecdotes at the end of your videos, where you hearken Tolkien's lessons back to the real world, and in whichever way is relevant, remind us we are greater standing together than apart. I don't stick around for the endings of most videos, but I always make a point to stay for yours.

As always Men of the West proves to be among the best, if not the best, channel about the Tolkien Legendarium! I have seen some others too, they are not bad as such. But none can match the level of reverence Yoistan (Yoisten?) always shows towards Tolkiens’ great works! I mean there is another channel that I will not name, that is amazing on covering great amounts of detail on Tolkiens’ Legendarium, that alienated me big time after hearing the guy munch on candy or food as they were narrating whatever topic the video was covering. Needless to say, I would like said channel to take a look at Yogistan (sorry bro, had to do it, pls don’t be mad) at how things should be done! So kudos Yoistan and I cannot wait for that New Shadow thing. Peace and Love friends

I am not sure any of this is fiction. Could Tolkien have had access, somehow, to parallel realities ? So much detail, so consistent, so complete. Is this far fetched ? Perhaps. But not impossible. Many very serious physicists believe in the Many Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics. Indeed, it is one of the leading schools of thought in that field.

Thanks for the great vid and especially for not including very big spoilers (guess the family tree of the elves doesn't count, nobody remembers it on the first reading ^^). The biggest one I think is the mention of the Kinslaying... I've already given this to a friend who hasn't even read any of the books yet :-)
