Menstrual Cup Shapes- Beyond the Basic Bullet

The basic cup shape- that of a bullet- has been more than perfected since the invention of the cup in 1937 by Leona Chalmers. You can now find hundreds of bullet/bell shaped cups and virtually all cups maintain that basic design principle. Some, like the round "ball" shaped cups are a whole other animal! These ball shaped cups are "love it or hate it" but those who love them LOVE them. I'll also go into another variation on the bullet, the "ergonomic" tapered cup.

I was lucky enough to find the right cup for me on my first try. But to anyone who's scared of trying cups, I highly recommend them! I went from pads to cups. Used pads my whole life and have never used tampons. I don't regret it at all.

I was pleasantly surprised to see this video in my subscriptions today. Thank you so much for discussing a cup fit-related factor that people often overlook. In my experience, trying a fishbowl-shaped cup was such a game changer (as cliche as that sounds). The bullet-shaped cups would leak after only 4-5 hours of wearing and would often slip down if my pelvic floor muscles put any kind of pressure on them, especially if I was exercising. I do a lot of ballet-based cardio and pilates so the more pliés I do, the more pelvic pressure there is involved. Thankfully, my Merula can withstand all that pressure and can hold my heavy periods for a good 12 hours. That said, on the days when I feel too tired and crampy to insert my cup (thanks, endometriosis), I've found period panties to be quite the godsend.

I use the Merula one size cup and I think it's great for people with midium to low cervix like me. I have heard about women having the problem you mentioned in the video but I think it may be because they actually have a high cervix, which means the cup has enough space in the vagina to turn around and spill the content out. Ladies, if you have a low to medium cervix please don't stop yourselves to try a round shape cup (the short ones). For some people like me cups with that shape are the only option that actually works. Sorry for any mistakes I made writing in English. I'm from Panama 🇵🇦 and we speak and write Spanish here 😁

Yeah first started with the size one Lunette and had no issue but it was time to replace and The Diva Cup is one of the few sold in stores and unfortunately that was a waste of $40! But I learned in that, that I have a low cervix which is why the Lunette was no problem for me. I compared the two and the DC is much longer so it always felt like it was popping out😩

This is the 4th video I've watched by you gals and I am so happy I found your channel! I was recovering from a surgery I had on my uterus and had to stop using my menstrual cup because I became so stressed out about the pain and changes I was experiencing. And I had only just started using my cup regularly. I thought I was going to have to buy a new one (or several until I could find one that didn't hurt) but after watching your videos, I tried the one I had--with a renewed open mind and a clearer understanding of how to insert it--and it worked perfectly and painlessly. Thank you, I'm so pumped to not be creating extra waste and putting strange materials in my body. So thankful I can take care of myself in a way that I prefer. You ladies are so awesome.

Thank goodness I found your page. I've been wanting to use a Cup for a while now but all we have available near me are Diva Cups. I tried one but the rim around the top was just WAY too stiff and it never felt comfortable, I felt like I couldn't sit down with a stem that stiff. I wasn't even done watching this video before I ordered a Kind cup! The design looks comfy, the silicone looks way softer, and the stem looks much more like the tampon string I'm used to. i’ve tried a lot of cups and now the lumma discs too and honestly i don’t find the disc any messier than cups. my cups always spilled into the toilet anyway on heavy days bc they got full. i just always removed over the toilet or in the shower. i never thought i would try or like discs but now i like them even more than cups. i still like cups for times when i know i can’t get to a bathroom for several hours or just when i want to be super secure and know i won’t leak (since it has a seal), but for regular activities and even exercising (which is mostly roller skating for me) i prefer discs. i like not having to check for a seal and that i can empty without fully taking it out. however, i have found that my disc stains really easily even though i wash with cold water first. it usually goes away when i boil it to sterilize it though. if stains persist i will probably get out the hydrogen peroxide and/or sun-bleach it. on the other hand, my cups never really stained. still, it isn’t a big deal and it’s not hard to fix if i wanted to.

I tried different bullet shaped cups and nothing really worked for me. I just had leaking, however i tried... I bought merula one size because it says it's suitable for low cervix and very heavy flow (I have both). I couldn't be happier with it. I put my cervix inside the bullet on purpose because then there's no leaking at all. When cervix is inside the cup, the cup won't turn around. Taking it out has never been a problem, i just pull the ring with one finger and solve the vacuum with another. I think, round shaped cups are not for everyone, but it's worth trying if you don't get along with bullet shaped. And i really like the high capacity.

It actually happened to me too once. I have a Lilycup which has an inner rim, making the inner diameter smaller and it snuggled around my cervix perfectly. Which was not fun. I couldn't get the seal broken because I was pinching on my cervix (just pinching the bottom of the cup doesn't usually brake the seal with that cup), so I pushed my finger between the cup and my wall and hooked into the cup so I can pull it down. It was a little messy and definitely a workout but that's what I do if it ever happens.

Not a fan of their marketing which leaned heavily into the "use a disc to have mess free sex for the benefit of your man" angle at their launch. They also trash talked menstrual cups compared to discs but that marketing changed when they bought a menstrual cup design. So yes, they brought this design to the market on behalf of Keela Cup but it's all about money. They hate cups until they sell one... that left a VERY bad taste in my mouth for the brand and that's the start of a long list lol. I'm happy that people like this cup and it's been a success for many who struggled with removal but as a brand I can't support them. But I will always advocate for cups in general and for a good user experience in the end. -Kim

Right?!! I came to the comments in hope of finding an answer to that question!! Why aren't y'all "crazy" about the brand flex? What's up with that? You cant just make a comment like that & leave us hanging wondering what in the actual f*ck is that about? LOL Well, actually i guess you can do that because you just did buuut c'mon sis spill the tea or in the case the cup? LMAO!!

They sell disposable disks with their cup, they stole the design idea that an Etsy seller came up with and pitched it as their own and charged more for it. I have the flex cup. It's a major pain to insert but great for removing. Not too comfortable at first but it will eventually settle. It will not open on its own. So you definitely need to make sure it opens once it's inserted.

If you’re still wondering, my suggestion is to buy two. I know they’re expensive, but it’s definitely worth it to try different shapes and sizes. Personally I bought the saalt soft cup in the regular size and a lily cup in the small size. I have a high-ish cervix and I’m 18, with a fairly active sex life, and the lily cup is definitely the favorite of the two because it’s more comfortable, but the shape makes it a little hard to tell if it’s placed right. So anyways the bottom line is try more than one, of different shapes and sizes

Ok tmi but ya girl needs help. I have a bullet shaped cup and at the beginning of my period when my flow is thicker, the blood goes around the cup even though I feel as though it's sealed to my vaginal walls. I've also had the bullet shaped cup turn around a couple times inside of me which is so frustrating and it gets uncomfortable! I don't have the money to spare to try a ton of different things so I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem?? If so what has worked for you??

Ellie Friedman I started with the size one Lunette and had no issue, only one time that I leaked was when I lost track of time and hadn't emptied it soon enough. It was recently time for a new cup so I went with the size one Diva Cup and it leaked every time no matter what I tried different and it always felt like it was popping out of me. Unfortunately, the Diva Cup i purchased was more than likely the wrong size as well as me realizing that I have a low cervix therefore the Lunette cup is just better for my body. Long story short, menstrual cups are unfortunately trial and error. Maybe you can try disposable soft cups/discs? I know they're much cheaper.

Ellie Friedman No problem! Also theres the Saalt soft cup that is sold in stores in my area (maybe yours as well) thats very similar in shape and size to the Lunette and its about $8 cheaper. That will most likely be the next cup I purchase. Good luck👍

I tried a normal bullet shaped cup once and on the second day I developed a UTI. would the ergonomic shaped one or the disk possibly work better for me? I'd love to be more environmentally friendly with my feminine products.

In some rare cases a cup that applies too much pressure can restrict urine flow that results in a UTI. If you're prone to UTI and had this happen a disc might be the safest option since they don't apply pressure to the bladder based on how they're positioned compared to cups.

I'm a 50-year-old male, but I have always felt bad for girls because they have to keep changing disposable protection and worry about having enough. I gather that the cup, whichever one you choose, is easier because you only need one and it lasts 12 hours before you have to empty it.
