This is the thing about sizing... there are three basic formats they go for.. holds on to paint (good for glazing, bad for lifting)... lets paint go (good for lifting, bad for glazing).. and somewhere in the middle which usually winds up a mess that doesn't do anything well. It's basically impossible to make a paper that does both well since they are opposite reactions to each other. I personally adore a paper that grabs my paint and holds it right where I put it. I work with a lot of detail and glazing and nothing ruins my day faster than paint going mushy. I could care less about lifting. I've tried the hot press version of this paper and it glazes like a boss, I loved it so much I immediately went to Amazon and bought a sample pack of everything they make to try. The hot press BTW has a slight texture which is absolutely the way I like it. This paper is branded for Meeden but it's actually Baohong and they make two versions.. this one (academy) and an artists version. They are both 100% cotton. This paper 100% has sizing, it's just not what you are used to apparently. I've worked on paper with bad/no sizing, everything is a blurry mushy mess, like trying to write with ink on a paper napkin. There is no movement the paint sticks and blooms instantly.

It has to be sized at least internally or it would act like a napkin. My guess is that it has no EXTERNAL sizing.

I remember seeing a video by Teoh Yi Chie, where he found that some of his old watercolor papers had started to lose their sizing (the papers had been sitting in his drawer for some years). Anyways. He he showed on his video how you can reapply sizing to your old watercolor papers. I guess the tricky part is, figuring out how much you should apply it.

I like Fabriano Artistico 140lb/300gsm paper but it's only cheap in full sheet packs of 10 or more. Last year I got a 10-pack at Jerry's Artarama for $34.99. It might be $36 or 38 now but that's still less than $5/sheet. It's worth the evening I spend breaking them down into smaller sheets while binge watching Law & Order re-runs. 😆😆😆

Oh yeah, breaking down giant sheets can toooooootally be economical, even though some may find it tedious. I used to get big sheets of paper when I did a lot more bookbinding because it just made sense to do it that way! I’ve got some fabriano artistico or multiple varieties that I bought on a “let’s go crazy and get obsessed with collecting every kind of paper that’s ever existed” day. =>..>= I know there’s a bin of them trapped inside an inaccessible bookshelf right now, and that’s kind of a bummer.

Thank you for sharing your experience with this paper and how it performed for you! I've had some bad luck testing papers lately. I bought this cheap watercolor paper called Shizen that had completely missed it's sizing coating stage. Pigments just soaked into the paper fibers. What was intended as a fine detail became chaotic abstract art. The color spread unevenly around the edges of the painted line. Like painting on thick printer paper not even made for watercolor :( It looks like Meeden doesn't have enough, but sadly I've found it could have been much worse lol. On the complete other end of the spectrum some papers have way too much sizing (Mairtini brand). Both are a terrible problem! I normally build up layers of color, but with too much sizing everything lifts easily. I erased any dry layer I put down with a single swipe of a wet brush (eek!). It makes me realize why some paper's have such brand loyalty, Arches in particular, for being more of a consistent middle ground. Some people hate the Bee paper I use, a bit on the lower end of sizing amount, because things tend to stain. It works so well for me though since it holds detail and I can add 5 layers without disturbing the previously dry layers. The search for the *perfect* paper goes on :)
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 5 жыл бұрын
Oh man, I TOTALLY know what you mean about *too much* sizing also being a problem. It makes the page all gummy and stuff moves all weird and wrong. I think that’s one of the problems with some canson Montval paper I used to use for quick stuff and swatches. You totally nailed my feelings about arches without even knowing it, and without me really knowing how to express it. Arches, to me, doesn’t really thrill me. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don’t, and maybe that’s actually to do with the perspective I gain from any paper I’ve used before. I’ve never HATED arches, but I’ve also never LOVED it, and I think that May be to what you’re essentially describing; its consistent. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a reliable paper, but when you’re the middle-ground, people looking for something in either extreme direction of the spectrum won’t be as thrilled with the middle. I personally love bee paper, and find it to definitely be a reliable brand for me that hits that sweet spot of affordable, accessible, and performance. My personal favorite is definitely that kilamanjaro paper from cheap joe’s, though. Definitely great for layering, and it comes in both bright white and a sort of natural soft white variety! I’ve heard stellar things about legion’s Stonehenge line but haven’t personally gotten the chance to use my small hoarde of it. =>.
@KimberlyCrick
@KimberlyCrick 5 жыл бұрын
@@MeowMeowKapow I'll have to check out that kilamanjaro cheap joes paper! I tried Legion's stonehenge, and while nice, I found the surface a little fragile for pens. I use a technical pen and it works really good on Bee or Arches, but on Legion's paper it tears up the top layer of the paper with the fine needle tip (tiny fibers fray). I suspect this would be the case with any microns/fineliner pens. It handles watercolor and brush pens well though.

Heya! I have yet to watch the whole video but back a while ago I ordered this paper via AliExpress, the smallest cold press size and a bigger hot press size. I agree about the texture of the cold press - it's grainy and you end up accidentally drybrushing more than it should. I quite like it for loose painting and urban sketches for the portability and because it is glued. Now for the hotpress, I made a nice illustration and I quite loved! The texture is, well, smooth as normal printer paper so anyone needing control with their lines won't face trouble. Granted, I think I faced the same issue as yours - doesn't take the same number of layers as, let's say, an arches, but it's a really good price point for those who doesn't live in the US-EU axis, and on Jackson's website they do sell fluid cotton paper! I just don't know if the price is as good as the price you'd find in US. Another good paper I would really recommend if it wasn't so hard to find outside of EU would be a clairefontaine cold press block. Back then I paid £25 for a 20 sheet block with a 24x30cm size. Haven't used much because of that usual artist fear of ruining nice paper with not so good art :P It's weird that on Amazon they're being sold under meeden, they aren't meeden branded at all but rather as "Baohong". This is the "academy" line of cotton paper. On AliExpress they also sell the Baohong "Artist quality" paper and I bought them too! Still didn't experiment painting on them to see how they take up.
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 5 жыл бұрын
I noticed the meeden/baohong/academy thing, and I think it’s because Meeden is totally reselling all sorts of stuff that they just buy in bulk from generic companies. The only thing that has their name stamped on it are the half pans I get from them, so I’m curious if they truly manufacture anything. Actually, the tube paints I’ve got might have their name as well. Haven’t heard of the paper you mentioned! And when I looked for the fluid 100 cotton paper on Jacksons, it wasn’t there. But their search doesn’t seem the most intuitive so I might have been either too vague or too specific on my quest. =>.

Hi Maddy, I have purchased the baohong academy blocks five times since earlier this year. By the way, I noticed that they had three different surfaces among them even though they are the same cold pressed model. It is inconvenient for the user that the paper surface purchased in a few months is inconsistent. Overall, they are great for beginners of non-us / uk backgrounds to use 100% cotton watercolour paper at a reasonable price. For color swatch, there is no difference from arches(I've compared in my share art channel). Still I'm so interested in this paper. So It would be highly appreciate if you could tell us the difference between the academy and artist grade of baohong :)

In some cases mostly when painting something elaborate, I notice that I hate it wheny paint starts lifting. True it is practical for correcting mistakes and softening hard edges, but I prefer the colors to stay put! I think I might like it. Where you happy with the vibrancy of the colors? How about edge softening while still wet? How does it behave when you use a single or a couple of layers? Would it be appropriate for landscape and urban sketches? Too many questions.. Hahah 😅

I have a sneaking suspicion that they do not, in fact, make a majority of their products and are, instead, bulk-buying things from generic manufacturers and reselling them. Mostly because their quality varies wildly from product to product, and even the quality control within each individual item is wildly different. I reviewed some of their brushes a while ago and they were AWFUL. Someone else said they had completely the opposite experience, so I think maybe it’s basically all just.....like.....but half pans from meeden but nothing else because it’s all a crapshoot as to whether or not it’ll even be usable.

Nah, cannon XL, in my opinion, is easier to control than this paper was. Sure, canson warps like all heck and is the lowest usable quality for non-cotton papers, but I’d be more willing to work on a full, detailed painting with the canson XL stuff than with this meeden paper. But like I said in the video, being able to soften edges and lift and such has become an important part of my technique, so taking away that ability was a real handicap. I actually use canson xl a lot, since it’s one of my “don’t care about it so do whatever I want with it” sketchbooks. A lot of the swatching videos and doodlefinder videos are done in it, actually! Probably my favorite one was the quinacridone quintet m graham video, where I ended up drawing a devil in a bath robe. And I ddI quite a lot of lifting in that piece-wouldn’t have been nearly as fun if I hadn’t.

That devil is legit one of my favorite pieces. Canson XL gets a bad rap and is almost uttered like a dirty word, but really? It’s a pretty reliable choice. Nothing fancy, and certainly not the BEST in any category, but when you find bad papers you start to appreciate the mediocre ones that everyone overlooks. Most of my doodlefinders are done on canson because it’s so affordable, but I’ve also slipped in bee paper, and now hand•book (which is also done by the same company that makes fluid.)

@@MeowMeowKapow I agree, that Canson Xl might not be the best, but it's also not the worst. I don’t have their block pad so can’t say anything about it, but I do have their watercolor journal and flippin LOVE it. Absolutely head over heels love their watercolor journals. The ones with black covers. I used them for all my Inktober 2017 videos and that’s when our love affair began.

thanks for the thoughts on this, ill keep an eye out for it!! i really enjoy working with bee paper but ive found that my daniel smiths will haaardly budge compared to on cellulose, and m. graham and sennelier only do a little better with that, so ive acclimated when working with it! on the block of the fluid100 paper i have, it actually extremely dulls my dark tones and gets a little testy with too many layers so im wondering if i just got a bad block or something since no one mentions the same. id definitely keep trying it because i really love that price point!

Hm. Is the fluid paper you’re using cellulose, or cotton? I’ve used both, and while I certainly use the cellulose more frequently for its price point, I’ve loved the cotton every time I’ve used it!

Meow Meow Kapow surprisingly it is the 100% cotton one 😅 i got a little 4x6 block from blicks website for $5! that definitely gives me hope to keep trying it!! it soaks up the saturation from my colors, but for some reason i experience it much less with sennelier paints. truly an anomaly 🤔 thanks for the reply btw!! your videos have definitely influenced my watercolor journey!

I have experience with fabriano artístico and saunders Waterford and i like this last one a lot. I don't like the fabriano too much.

Just reviewed the Saunders Waterford sort of accidentally, actually! I own fabriano artistico, just still haven’t gotten a chance to use t yet. Have heard mixed things about it so I’m looking forward to eventually putting it through its paces!

@@MeowMeowKapow thanks for the answer! I'd like to hear about your opinion of how they compare, if you remember to come back here after you try the Fabriano. I can't put my finger on what is the difference between them... Is more a feeling i have than an actual complain. I think is that fabriano is somehow too soft and absorbent more water and buckles more easily. Probably it may have to do with the style one goes for (more wet on wet or more filling colors for illustrations) and the level of skill (can one work alla prima or needs to rework). Anyways! My next try will be saunders 200lb, since from what i heard is the best thing ever (taking into account quality, grs/m, and price). Cheers!

I want to use my Monopoly money as real money, but nobody will accept it... I think it's because it doesn't feel as nice as the real thing. Ah well. Did you notice any pilling on this paper? I've found with paper that's not sized well (cheap) and pure cotton paper, that it tends to pill easier if I work an area too much, unlike the Legions or Arches. Overall, what would be your recommendation on this paper, especially for someone like me? I'm staring at Meeden, and while I love their tins, I'm wondering about all the private label products they are pitching, a discussion we've had before, in brief. Between them, Arteza, and Wanmei, there's a lot of these kinds of products on the market and it's tough to tell which one's are "truly" good vs. truly good "enough." If that makes sense. Love this review and both pieces are fabulous! Thank you! :)

There wasn’t any pilling, but looking at it afterwards there was a bit of feathering in the paint and the ink. It’s hidden pretty well by the texture, but I’d personally pass on this. This is another resell by meeden, because the company listed on the pad itself is something that starts with a B. My favorite meeden product remains their half pans, yeah. =>.

M.D. Campbell nah, I meant their actual physical empty half pans-haven’t tried their pre-poured paints, and I’ve only swatched the tube ones!

i think you just got a bad block. baohong watercolor papers work pretty well for me, but I did experience the problems as mentionned in your video, after a long time of not using it. baohong definitely have sizing just like any other watercolor papers, so it must be because of unfavorable storage conditions, the sizing deteriorated over times.

The paper might only be minimally internally sized, rather than external too like others. Hence the price.
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 5 жыл бұрын
It’s possible, though I would have no way of knowing if that were true or not. Surface sizing is so much easier to identify, especially when it’s done poorly like in a couple of books I have where a full wash over the page turns out splotchy....but internal sizing? I’ve got no idea how to test or identify that.
