JIMBO'S GARAGE

6 жыл бұрын

I built this Metal Arch Top Gate With Security Screening for a client who drew up the design. I was a little hesitant getting into this project because I haven't done a arch top gate before, but it turned out great.
Subscribe to Jimbos Garage: bit.ly/JimbosGarage
I was surprised to learn that the square tubing gets out bent out of square when it gets arched, makes perfect sense, but something I didn't think about. It did not end up effecting the out come of the project but it is probably something to consider when using bent steel. I was also happy to see that there were no surprises when I cut the arch opening. The privacy screen was a nice added touch. It is easy to work with and provides some additional privacy.

Jimbo, one of the things you might want to try to fit the deformed arch (from the rolling process) to the verticle legs of the gate is to slice on the front and back of the arch tube along the length of the arch about 3-4" from where the leg/arch joint is towards the peak of the arch. Hope that makes sense. Then, squeeze the now 'loose" front and back (or just do one surface depending on the gap you need to make up) together to the same thickness as the verticle legs. Weld it up. ...an explanation that makes one remember the picture is worth a thousand words saying.

Hey Jimbo, I really like your work. How come you prevent distortion? I am new to welding and when I make my gates and the look at them from the corner angle I can see that it bend towards the place where I welded. It Really drives me crazy. I am using pure CO2. Should I use argon and co2 mix.
@rich5034
@rich5034 2 жыл бұрын
Rusu, I am a beginner with limited tools but this is what I try to focus on: Make cleaner cuts even if I have to touch them up with flap disk before I weld. Make sure the fitment is very good after I clamp using a jig, level, square, 345, etc. Thoughtfully choose where to tack weld. (I think tack welds can be used to make adjustments?) Double and triple check fit again. When I am satisfied with how it looks I start welding. I find that welding slowly, and alternating where I weld helps it stay a little better. I am sure I missed lots of stuff but this is working for me. Hopefully others can add some insight. And I'm not sure of your experience but good luck and keep grinding!

Vancouver Island Waterjet Well First of all I am no bending expert! My bender is a pyramid type but all three wheels are driven, even then I sometimes get some slip. I have not done any galvanized pipe myself but I did see a friend do a bunch I think for some trampolines once. What he did was have a local machine shop with cnc lathe make him dies out of a hard plastic. It didn't hurt the coating. Unfortunately I haven't had any luck bending round tubing with anything but close to the correct size. As you said, it collapses it. Jimbo on this video had this problem because the company had the side plates too far apart and it let the square tube spread a bunch. It is hard to do because it puts a big bind on the side plates when spaced to prevent spreading out. In that situation I really have to grease the side plates heavy where they get rubbed on by the tubing. Wish I was more help. Tom
@Okie-Tom
@Okie-Tom 6 жыл бұрын
Jim Allmon I is possible but you would have to have a way to first heat it red and then handling it without burning yourself or heating up the machine too much! I have tried to anneal the tubing after the first bend or two but it sometimes tries to warp the tubing.
