Thanks. I just got my Bounty Hunter Tracker IV and a pin point probe. Was digging on just straight dirt and no grassy area. After watching this video now I have an idea on grassy areas.

That was an awesome instructional video on how to dig a plug! However, newbies should be aware of how to coin probe an extremely shallow coin, so that they don't have to dig those deeper plugs for a 1-2 inch deep coin. Keep up the great videos! Joe

I've been digging plugs and flaps square and at 90 degrees for 25 years. This cuts less roots too in addition to what you ave already said. I see these other people on youtube that are cutting shallow and funnel shaped plugs and we know these will die and just blow away. I have dug test plugs in my yard and know that the deeper the plug the better. I won't detect a nice yard unless the soils moist. Even the best deep plug will turn brown in dry conditions.

Use your Pistol Probe before you dig out a monster plug. I cut plugs less than an inch in diameter using the pistol probe. It tells me exactly where the target is meaning a smaller plug.

Hey Twistidd, I do some probing and popping of shallow targets. Especially if I'm sure they are new coins. The new Garrett Propointer can do about the same on shallow targets.

I agree big deep hole is best less work and less damage - I do not complete the circle however I make big trap door technique holes looks better and wont lift away-

personally, I use my detectors pinpointer function. Then I make one clean cut about 6" in and then twist it fwd slightly. Then I put my pointer probe into the small slit. If I get a signal and I usually do, I then make a cut on ea side of the original cut. This makes about a 1/2 circle. I then fold the soil up enough to get to the target. Then I close the flap and step on it. Dont make a big ass full circle cut and pull it out. When you have a dime sitting 1" below the surface cutting a 6" x10" chunk out isnt exactly smart or efficient. A other good way is to use a fat screwdriver. After you've pinpointed, stick the screwdriver in and turn it back and forth enough to get your probe inside. If you target it then gingerly dig it out w/o disturbing the grass at all.

I had one owner ask me if I'd finish digging a swimming pool hole for them LOL :) Of course they were joshing but it was a big plug LOL. Little over zealous.

This guy don't have other videos showing that he does metal detecting all the time. You don't know the ins and outs, the ups and downs about detecting, if don't metal detect. It is easy for you to show others.

A FULL plug turns BROWN as the grass dies... I think a HALF moon plug is MUCH more effective in keeping the property NEAT and ALIVE....

Please don't cut all the way around the hole. Cutting the same size plug in a "U" or "V" shape allows you to pull the plug but keeping a good size of continuous root system between plug and the rest of the area. Cutting a "V" leaves the dig almost undetectable as well which is the ultimate goal.

This method will kill the sod. Also, this method will make it so that people will no longer be able to metal detect in parks where this method is being used.

There's a solution. Don't metal detect in new sod and respect the land.

The thing that comes out of the hole after you dig it. Your goal is to try to keep the plug's grass on it and to make the ground look like there was never a hole.
