This song problably helped thousands of people NOT committing suicide, including my best friend. I‘ll always be thankful for Metallica and get chills and tears hearing the solo.
@matthewhoag26093 жыл бұрын
Very astute observations for being new to the genre! The music is fundamental and just as important as the lyrics in much of rock, and even more so in metal. Metal is all about guitar riffs and blazing solos. The music totally sets the emotional stage for the lyrics. This song was criticized for being pro-suicide, but that was completely wrong. Growing up in the 80’s it wasn’t cool to be depressed, and nobody talked about it openly. For many metal heads this song let them know they weren’t the only ones having dark days. For many, knowing that made things a little bit better.

I was 14 when this album came out and going through some very dark times, this song saved me. Every word in the lyrics was what I was feeling but the final solo was so inspiring, so uplifting so impactful that it showed me that there was a little light within the darkness and there was hope... I'm 50 now and have had battled depression all my life yet this song is my life line...

Great observations! Especially the momentum aspect. Metal is one of the few genres where the music tells just as much of the story as the lyrics. Sometimes more. Metallica is a great example of that.

Bro, metal may be the most brutal form of music, but it can also be the most beautiful. I know you haven't heard the brutal side yet, but I'm sure you'll get there. But for the most part, a LOT of metal has a much deeper meaning behind not just the words, but the music as well than any other genre. There is something for everybody in metal. It's so incredibly versatile from band to band and even song to song. Keep on this metal journey. You won't like all of what you hear. Hell, I'm a die hard metal fan and even I don't like a lot of what I hear. But there is no better genre in the world.

A few ideas for a tour across the European continent: Nightwish - Ghost Love Score (from Wacken) They are the band that established symphonic metal, with guaranteed Floorgasm (Floor is the singer's name) Jinjer - Pisces (Live session) The typical sentence of a reactor is: I did not expect that. Jinjer are actually a hardcore metal band, but they cannot be tied to one genre. Here they are primarily Jinjer. A typical hardcore band would be Parkway Drive with Prey, but here we are again in the USA. Rammstein - Du hast (from Paris) The pyromaniac among the bands. They created the sub-genre 'Neue Deutsche Härte'. Sabaton - Bismarck (Official Video) Sabaton are fascinated by the war and its stories without denying its dark side. The style is European power metal and the precursor to symphonic metal. ELUVEITIE - The Call Of The Mountains Folk Metal based on the Middle Ages, in the typical poppy way. SKÁLD - Rún They take you to the Vikings. Folk Metal like SKÁLD doesn't sound like Metal when you first listen to it. In fact, you can hear many techniques from metal and in Europe you can also find them at many metal festivals. Healing - Krigsgaldr Folk Metal again, but a bit before the Vikings. When it comes to the times, however, the following applies: Back then there was no musical notation system. What they play is the modern interpretation, based on songs whose changes we do not know over the last 2000 years.

The song content is as follows... The the intro is the individual has decided to kill themselves. Thr middle of the song is them explaining why they want to die ; like a suicide note. The outro solo represents the person going through with the act with the peak of the ascending scales marking the moment of the act while the descending section and fade is them actually fading into black " death". Never apologize for pausing. I enjoy hearing your thoughts. If you're new, let me give some background. Back in the early 80s, there was something called the "metal underground." It was people sending cassette copies through the mail in a kind of pre-internet global file-sharing system. Back then, "heavy metal" meant those silly hair bands to most people, and the metal underground was a rejection of that. The metal underground was creatively vibrant and gave rise to thrash metal, speed metal, death metal, and black metal. Those tapes were copies of copies of copies, so they sounded like crap, but it was thrilling because it sounded like nothing you could hear on the radio, in record stores, or on MTV. I'm told hip-hop started out much the same way: people sending tape copies to each other through the mail. Anyway, even back then, Metallica was known to be incredibly ambitious among the underground bands, and they were indeed the first underground band to be signed to a major record label. Back in the underground days, Metallica vowed to never do lyrics about Satan because they felt it was a cliche even back then. Consequently, they cover more interesting lyrical ground than the other metal bands. The song One is an anti-war screed based on the book/movie "Johnny Got His Gun." Enter Sandman is literally just about a child having nightmares (or being afraid of having nightmares). Megadeth was founded by Dave Mustaine, who was kicked out of Metallica before they even signed a deal with an obscure independent label (Roadrunner), much less a major label. Ironically, Mustaine was kicked out for being an alcoholic, and the rest of the band eventually became alcoholics themselves. Anyway, because of this, Metallica and Megadeth famously hate each other, even though their fans often listen to both bands. Metallica and Megadeth are both politically liberal, but Metallica avoids politics out of a desire to avoid alienating potential fans, although a few of their songs are political (such as One). Megadeth on the other hand will shove their liberal politics in your face, probably out of a desire to mock Metallica for hiding their own politics in public. If you decide to listen to Megadeth, start with "Peace Sells, But Who's Buying?" which uses a hefty dose of sarcasm to deliver an anti-war message. It also happens to have what I consider the best bass line in heavy metal. If you only listen to three thrash metal bands, let it be Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax (famous for doing a rap with Public Enemy). All 3 bands came out of the metal underground and introduced thrash metal to mainstream audiences. Anthrax can also get political, but mostly they are about humor and absurdism. If you want to listen to speed metal, start with "Raining Blood" by Slayer. Slayer was the first speed metal band from the metal underground to get signed by a major label, and is probably the most well-known. Death metal is kind of the opposite of speed metal. It's all about the slow grind. I'm not sure who to recommend because the death metal bands I listened to didn't make it out of the metal underground and onto a major label. Black metal is simply less interesting to me because what sets it apart is lyrical content, which is pretty much just Satan, Satan, Satan. That stops being funny/edgy after you turn 15. I think it's still popular in Scandinavia. Venom was the only band I remembered from that subgenre.

Great reaction man you got yourself a new sub. Now if you want lyricism let me introduce you to Tool. I and many people will advise you to have lyrics with you while listening to them. you can take what ever you need to from the song, there's no such thing as a qualified opinion when it comes to your own interpretations, you are the qualification, so just say what you feel the song is telling you. personally I think the solo, specifically the peaks and valleys the solo, represent the battle against suicide, and the amazing crescendo at the end is representation of victory. and the fact that the song fades to black while the solo is still going means that the person is still carrying on and we haven't heard their end yet.

pause it when you want, as long as its not in the middle of a guitar solo. Thats a no no. But pause and break it down just like you would in hip hop or rap. Just roll it back the same 10 secs. Very insightful observations about metal for someone who hasnt really listened to it before. Metal is all about the musicality first, lyrics second. Lyrics are definitely important, but the instruments are the emotion. The instruments are what take you on the journey. If you are going to dive into the metal genre full force i feel i must warn you though. It will suck you in, and Metallica sets a pretty high bar when it comes to musicality. They are the Kings of flawless transitions and change-ups.
