This the only song of the later Metallica I could name. Being around the skateboarding scene, it was thrash metal, punk, or more alternative stuff like Janes Addiction or what have you. IJFA and Garage days revisited ep and back were a part of that. I just couldn't connect with the later stuff. It felt like it was more for their biker fanbase. Plus I was in a different place in my tastes. An artist, married and listening a much broader playlist by then. Rediscovering older stuff as well as the newer 90's fare faded my interest in Metallica. You're right Lulu was just garbage. I was a Lou Reed Velvet Underground but it was painful.

I've been a Metallica fan since 1985, I was 15 y old. In a radio show inmy city Medellín-Colombia they played two songs from a new band called Metallica, the songs was Motorbreath and The four horsemen... My mind literally were blown away! I grew up as a thrash Metallica boy, but I love Load since the very first note to the end, and Re-Load too. Lulu is a fucking trash agree. I've really loved any Metallica album. Greetings from Medellín-Colombia.

Yep, people need to pay more attention to the lyrics. James is the best lyricist and one of the best rhythm guitarist ever imo. For me, Metallica is in their own genre, they don't let anyone defy them, that is what I love about them. Their songs always have deeper meaning. I love this song, outlaw torn, and many more, so deep, so therapeutic. Btw, you have one hell of a job, I can never do that work you do, it must have given you nightmares. I instantly liked the Load and Re-Load albums. Metallica (like many metal bands at the time) mostly did social commentary (war, society/culture, religion, politics), but really only started doing the introspective thing on a few tunes on the Black Album. Most artists start out (and some only do) the deeply personal feeling stuff (Alice and Chains for example, not "metal" but I digress). It was a change and the good songs from these albums were GREAT! . . . The "effect" you might be referring to here (at the beginning of the song) is simply a fretless bass with flatwound strings.

@beezysbeatz4924

I think it's so silly how a lot of Metallica fans think a group of men can and should never change or grow and mature or expand. If you think the Black album was when they "sold out" then you should listen to #HookerWithaPenis from #Tool I'm not sure why that's the title other than being funny, but its not about a literall hooker. Anyway, Metallica is a band that has created some of the best and most loved Rock and Metal music ever. They earned and deserve every bit of love they've received from fans. They did not deserve all the backlash and criticism from those same "fans". Even though those fans have the right to like what they want and the right to voice their opinions abt what-the-fuck ever, doesn't mean those opinions and criticisms are warranted or even valid because this band 'rocked out with their cocks out' in a way few other bands did or were capable of doing so they reserve the right to record what-the-fuck-ever they want and/or needed to. If the Black album to the present isn't your cup of tea then take your petty, narrow-viewed, musically stunted 17 year old minded ass and go listen to Slayer or Anthrax and remain in the late 80s/early 90s era of Metal (not YOU specifically Kel and Rich, but you the fans in general). It was an awesome era and I revisit it often, but c'mon man! No musical genius like the guys in Metallica are going to limit themselves and their god-given talents to a single era and style. If they do that then their staying power and continued relevance would not exist. They'd be doing what bands like Slayer and Anthrax are doing. Tour their greatest hit(s) to death and into the ground until now...a 'farewell' tour. Those two bands are fortunate that Pantera couldn't keep together or the "Big Four" tour would have seen Slayer and Anthrax dukin' it out for that 4th spot cuz Pantera was big and bad enough to be #3 and #4. Point is that the attitude abt our favorite Metal bands that Rich was describing is rediculous. They aren't and never were 'our' Metallica. The music they made, made us fans of Metallica. They became the best because their music made it so. The fans did not create them and have no right to dictate what they should or shouldn't be doing. They veered off the musical path they were on for a few albums, not because they were out of ideas or too old, but because they wanted to. To prove their genius they diversified then came right back at us heavy and hard with #DeathMagnetic Which btw you haven't touched on. Please review #Cyanide from #DeathMagnetic ASAP. Even better, do a full album reaction. Thank you! Sorry for such a lengthy commentary, but this topic has bothered me for a long time and I had a lot to say abt it. Thanks for all you're doing for Rock and Metal! Those genres owe channels like yours much gratitude. How can I donate to your cause? I don't see you on Patreon.

Yes, "Lulu" is not a good album for Metallica standards. But it's not a Metallica album. It's a Lou Reed album with Metallica as his back up band. He wrote all the music, all the lyrics, made all the arrangements. They just added a few suggestions here and there. And the album is just called "Lulu", indeed the whole project is just "Lulu". They did a couple of gigs with him. I haven't seen the booklet, but I think the name Metallica is not even mentioned, it's probably just their names. So, no offence, but just kick it out of your Metallica discography. For me it's just "Death Magnetic" and then "Hardwired...". Keep on rockin'... ;-)

I had been a hardcore Metallica fan since Ride the Lightning came out. Those first albums Kill Em All, garage days re-revisited, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets. And justice for all. I can honestly say every one of those albums in my opinion are masterpieces in their own right. There isn't a bad song on ANY of them. The Black Album came out, I was very skeptical at first. I listened to it and discovetex there isn't a bad song on that album either.. Then they cut their hair, and released Load... My beloved Metallica turned into Alternica.. I can honestly say that exception of repurchasing full albums on new formats, I have never owned and have no desire 2 ever own any studio album recorded after the black album. We felt betrayed Course that is not including any live performances such as live shit binge & Purge and I actually enjoyed album where they merged their music with classical was very good As Well. Just seems like when Cliff passed away, they lost their direction and heart. Even the new music is missing the drive that they had. Metallica died shortly after Cliff Burton.

Metallica changes their way of music a lot of times for the good. The taste of music also changes for most of the people. And they are stil the top metal band because of that. Accepting the style of music is for the die hard fans difficult but you see that in tim they are alright with it. Load, Reload and Garage inc. are totally different from the other albums but still have good songs on it. Did you try something from their latest album 72 Seasons like Lux Æterna.

Wow Rich, open up a can of worms why dont ya. I'm one of the fans that felt like Justice was the beginning of the end. It was apparent they were shifting. Then Lars crying about copyright infringement with Napster when they used to encourage fans to dub their tapes and give em to friends. Then the hair cutting. But by this time, it was clear they weren't Metallica anymore. Theres maybe 5 or 6 songs after Justice that I like, this being one. Good vid guys. Keep it up.

Agreed. Tired. Aged and tired. Lars no longer have the stamina to do Creeping Death type of drumming anymore. So did James and Kirk. So one of them might have suggested, 'hey, let's make pop music.' That's how the mighty Metallica ends.
