The song is about cancer. In a few verses, pre choruses and choruses, James talks to cancer itself: “So tear me open, but beware There’s things inside without a care And the dirt still stains me So wash me until I’m clean” “It grips you (so hold me) It stains you (so hold me) It HATES you (so hold me)” “So tell me why you’ve chosen don’t want your grip, don’t any your greed” “I’ll tear me open, make YOU gone... No more can YOU HURT ANYONE and the fear still shakes me So hold me, until it sleeps” He’s saying - cancer...until it sleeps if you die from it or until it sleeps if it spares you.

You guys need to be more open minded. If the song is about cancer for you - it is. If the song is about addiction for you - it is. Music is art and everyone gets it different and its fine

Low Man's Lyric is one of my favs by them off of ReLoad. Mama Said is a different vibe from them. House That Jack Built.. Honestly, I really enjoyed Load and ReLoad. Load was my first Metallica album. I was pleasantly surprised when I doved into their older songs but these albums hold a place in my heart as it's what got me started with them

The lyrics of the song, written by Hetfield, are about his mother’s battle with cancer, to which the ‘it’ in the title refers to. The pain in the song can both refer to his own emotional pain or his mother’s physical pain.

The entire album is like a booze-soaked fever dream and a serious departure from the norm for them but Load is one of their best albums.

You have your opinion... mine is the opposite unfortunately... my opinion is Load and Re-Load albums are both crap... sorry, still decent songs, i suppose, but at the time i felt that they were turning their back on their roots... the very roots that helped build them up until they hit mega popularity... i was a fan since Ride the Lightning 🤔

@@jeffreymcrae3853 I agree that re-load was garbage for sure. I think maybe with Load a lot of my love for it is very location specific if that makes sense, what was going on with me at the time..

When my PTSD starts to creep in, and my demons start to wake up and stir, The song helps me remember what those demons actually are And how they affect me and those around me. And it reminds me that it is a matter of my will to forcibly Oust those demons.

I know that feeling all too well. Lovely cocktail of PTSD, Intermittent Explosive Temperament Disorder, and Melancholic Bi-Polar Depression (Thanks Uncle Sam!) some days leave me feeling just...hollow. I found this song during one of my more melancholic days (one where sadly I was thinking of ending it all) and I cried because they put into words what I was feeling. Still on the road to recovery, but now I have my friends and daughters to live for, so I ain't going anywhere anytime soon

It's interesting you bring up the tribal drum sound in the song; this song is about James Hetfield's mom's battle with cancer. When she was diagnosed she refused traditional medical treatments and instead opted to let God heal her. I never made that connection and it might just be coincidentally, but that's a really cool observation. The song The God That Failed also delves into the same topic. Very powerful song, I highly recommend that as well as Mama Said. James talks about his parents and his upbringing a lot in his lyrics and that's part of what makes Metallica stand out as a truly S tier metal band in my opinion. James really pours his entire soul into his music.

I think this song is about cancer, because James (the lead singer and rhythm guitar player) his mom I think died of cancer.

Most people shit on Metallica's music from 1991 to to 2008, but IMO there is a lot of good stuff in that era. This is one of my favorites from them period. Btw, more Iced Earth when? Please do Dracula.

3:54 Bottom line, vocal dynamics...slight variances in tone, expression like that make the message an artist is trying to display stand out..its hard to explain but James Hetfield clearly understood the nuances and dynamics that vocals can bring to a song. He is the metal vocalist GOAT IMO!

Great insights. For me, this song has a more spiritual perspective of someone battling their inner demons brought on by grief. Chief amongst them are pain, loss, and anger. And the subject of the song doesn't want to feel that way anymore. I feel that this is his or her way of exorcizing these demons. My take anyway.

37 Metallica songs 🤔 you may have put a decent dent but still have a long way to go 😆 A while back i commented that i stopped listening to Metallica when they announced that they were going alternative, this is the damm album they made the announcement. 😳😡😠😠😠😈😈😈👹👹👹 To further illustrate that fact you should watch the video to this song... until it sleeps... way to turn your back on your heritage 🤔 over a decade later... i still don't like this phase they went through... although i must admit... i dont mind later albums quite so much ( after Load and Re-Load albums ) 🤔
