Celebrating Appalachia recommended your recipe! I love pickles but have never tried for fear of mushiness. She said they were the best! I saved your video and will try it next summer!

I also follow Celebrating Appalachia. That's how I ended up here. I've made pickles before for my husband but they don't stay crunchy. Saving this for next summer so I can try again! Thanks for the video. Can I slice the pickles instead of leaving them whole and they still be crunchy?

JUST NOW WATCHING YOUR VIDEO! I've made dill pickles and jarred them like you do. I used an old-fashioned recipe that was slightly different. If you see this comment I might compare pickle recipes. Especially one ancient recipe using "Store bought pickes" which, by the way are simply DELICIOUS!! THANK YOU From the State of Minnesota U.S.A!

If you want to try another variety, try “Muncher”. It is a long, small seed, thin skin, straight growing cuke. This year I have had some irregular watering and got some weird shapes, but still tasty. I cannot seem to memorize my zone, but I live close to Tacoma Washington, so generally not on hot, but pretty dry summers. Muncher was the first variety I ever bought that actually look as pretty as store bought.

My mom taught me a similar way. The only thing we do different is after filling the jars with the liquid and putting the lid back on tight is sitting them upside down on the towel. After about 10-15 minutes I turn them all back upright. I use that method on most stuff including jams and jellies as well as pickles and tomatoes. Your plants looked healthy and green so I don’t think the issue is powdery mildew. I had an old gardener tell me to prune my cucumber plants because the leaves being too thick will shade the cucumbers too much and make them white. I took him seriously and prune. Cucumber vines sorta grow suckers like tomatoes. I also grow them on a trellis so mine get plenty of sun. I have never seen that film but I wonder if that’s the white he was referring to? I will be following the comments to see what other folks think it is. Thanks for another great video!

I canned 16 quarts of pickled okra yesterday (08/04/23). I did 7 jars with your recipe (with a little adjustment to the spices) and technique and 9 jars using another recipe and technique which included water bath canning. One of those jars didn't seal (isn't that weird that the jar that was water bathed didn't seal), so I put it in the refrigerator. We tried it today and it was a little soggy. So, we'll let you know in about a month how your recipe and technique turned out. I have a feeling it is going to be really good. And btw, all 7 jars sealed using your method. I almost chickened out and put them in the water bath canner but refrained. I'm so glad I did. There was still warmth coming from those jars probably 18-20 hours later. I wrapped them up very well with a bath towel.

If I may, I would like to explain a quick method that is used a lot here and that I am satisfied with. You can try a handful of pickles and spread it out if you find it uninteresting. I put my pickles in the sink like you, I add about a tablespoon of coarse salt per pound or more if needed and I rub the cucumbers against each other for a few minutes. Then I rinse them well. The coarse salt removes all that is to be removed on the cucumber and it comes out clean and ready to put in jar. When the cucumbers are very small, I put them on a cloth, cover them and rub them through the cloth and rinse them... this method is really fast and thanks to the coarse salt the cucumber is really well cleaned

Oh my! These taste so good. I canned 5 quarts, and they all sealed but 2, so I just put them in the refrigerator. It was way to tempting looking at them every time I opened the refrigerator so of course I ate a few. They are delicious. I canned 4 more quarts this evening. It went much smoother second time around so I am hoping they all seal this time. This will be the way i make dill pickles for now on. Thank you again.

I made these pickles today, Justin. Thank you so much for sharing your recipe & method! I gave up canning pickles many years ago because they always turn out soft & even mushy. I have made refrigerator pickles for the last several years using nearly this same recipe & they are delicious! But, we don't have the fridge space to do very many. So I'm excited to try these. How soon can these be opened & eaten? I have to wait about 2 weeks to open the refrigerator ones, so I wondered if we need to wait a bit to try these. We are looking forward to trying these! Thanks again!

Did you ever hear of the spiced mock apple pickles made with too big,or ripe cucumbers? They're very good, and really pretty, and taste like spiced apple rings!! They're easy, some call them cinnamon candy picles. You use a pkg of red hots, and can't remember what else. You peel and cut seeds out of cucumber, cut in chunks. P.S. you're a good "pickle packer"!! Fill the jars nicely!!
