About 250,000 sinus surgeries are performed in the US each year--some of which are quite necessary, and some of which might possibly be avoided. This video discusses "top 10" reasons to have sinus surgery in the opinion of Dr. Jeffrey Terrell, a professor of Otolaryngology at Michigan Medicine. See his other video on top 10 reasons to consider having sinus surgery.

You have done a great job explaining the pros and cons of having a nasal surgery vs not having one. I wish more Dr were like you, I know I would have felt a lot safer. And it's sometimes difficult to talk to some Dr's too. You can't even explained to them the feelings you're experiencing and if you ask too much questions their easily irritated. And they don't understand the psychology traumatic they can put on a patient in that moment, you just don't feel safe you feel alone and started questioning yourself are others gonna have this way as well you know. God bless you Dr

Diet plays a huge part. For me pers, no sugars or starches, then learning from Dr. ken Berry and my doctor recommending molybdenum (and I also began taking choline as I learned through my hard research I had histamine intolerance) and I no longer get cysts! Several cysts in my body had developed MRSA. Now 2.5 years no more of any cysts. I use my netipot equal part salt and baking soda morning and night and after 53 years of serious upper respiratory and sinus infections, I don’t get them anymore Keep a diary of good/drink/ people and emotions to know your individual triggers and adjust accordingly. Hope this helps someone else.

I've had six sinus surgeries so far in my lifetime, including two left frontal trephinations. My maxillary sinuses were full of polyps and significant mucosal thickening. After that procedure I was significantly better. It was only more than a decade later when my left frontal sinus became obstructed and abscessed that surgery was a medical necessity. I've been fortunate to have superior ear nose and throat surgeons. I did get a second opinion in order to get the last two procedures accomplished. There was a significant concern for developing rhinitis seca, but I was willing to take that trade off. Most of my sinusitis began as a result of exposure to secondhand smoke during 4 years in the military back in the seventies, before smoking was regulated at all.

I wish I had seen this video before the surgery I got in Denmark. The surgeon did not tell me what he planned to so. If he says he plans to cut any turbinate tissue or perfectly healthy ethmoid tissue, I suggest you walk or run out of the office. I do not have this, or not the suffocation symptoms, but look up "empty nose syndrome". It has been near two year now and not better. I was actually fine before the surgery, just slight forehead pressure behind eyes and mucosal thickening. Now, whenever I breath through my nose it hurts. Constant headache that I know is due to the surgery because I never had this before then, and if I breath strongly in through my nose the headache is worse. Feels like dry nose and like a cold that never goes away. Humidifier does not help. I suspect that my nose became too soft and is sort of collapsing. So there are other risks you never hear of. The surgery had a dramatic negative impact on my life. We need more videos like this.

These are my symptoms 100% as well. I am so sad I got this surgery. If you have any tips on his to get through the consistent pain with breathing, I would be beyond appreciative if you would be willing to share. I have heard using a CPAP at night might help, but I haven't been diagnosed with a low oxygen level, and no doctor understands why it hurts to breathe even though it clearly shows on a scan that the tissues were "reamed" too posterior in the nose. Wishing you help and peace through finding a way to maintain these symptoms.

What a great Dr. Man I wish I saw this guy, honest and a real doctor not pushing anything. I had surgery done and it was great, but my dr. was very conservative and errored on the side of caution. I had sinus surgery a few years back, and the results were great - I was able to breath easily through my nose and my constant stuffiness receded. Unfortunately, the results seem to be temporary, as my nasal passages have returned to their initial restricted state. I had the surgery in conjunction with an adult tonsil removal, which was necessitated by frequent occurrence of tonsil stones that formed in pockets within my tonsils (that had previously been shaved when I was a child, but had regrown to an unfortunate degree). I also have a mole on my arm that was taken off 4 years ago, but which has since regrown to it's original state. My body appears to have regenerative capacity in the most unfortunate areas :/

Thank you for the excellent information. I have a doctor pushing this direction but I am in the South end of the San Joaquin Valley in California and I have allergies and asthma and the polyps have swollen especially with the passion fire has for the trees up in the Sequoia National Forest. I use saline in the shower and do not use other nasal sprays. I use an Intellipap machine at night. I rarely have sinus infections. I feel as though the doctor is milking the insurance. He is now pulling away from the Hospital District and going into private practice and telling me maybe my insurance will cover the procedure and maybe it won't. He came in for about 5 minutes and said how much I really needed the surgery and then he told me I would be out for a full week off work. I am the main caretaker of my 91 year old mother-in-law after the death of my wife last year from MBC.

I had a bony spur, deviated septum, 24 years of green and yellow discharge, facial pain, headaches right by the ethmoids, and 20% breathing. I didn’t know I had the bony spur which was causing pain. I had an MRI done and allergy testing and the Perrigo nasal spray and the Loradatine just were not cutting it. So I am glad I went under. The first ENT dismissed that I had a a deviated septum (turns out it was moderate). Glad I had a second opinion because I told that first doc too that it was my nose.

The septoplasty took a bit longer to recover from, but all of my symptoms have resolved (headaches, physical blockage, neck pain, pressure, loss of sense of smell). Prior to this I was using saline rinse, Flonase, everything I could everyday with very little improvement in symptoms. I have had 3 surgeries but still continue to have sinuses dripping mostly infected sinuses after every 2 months or so. I'm also asthmatic and hence the Dr says it makes the sinusitis symptoms more severe. My question is since I have these recurring sinuses besides using my spray, inhaler, Alecet meds religiously everyday as advised by my Dr but seems not to be helping much. I recently had a CT Scan and the results revealed the sinus mucus fluid is so full from both sides and the forehead. The doctor is anticipating the 4th sinus Op which I'm not sure will solve this problem for good. Want to ask if I don't get this OP what will happen to this fluid. will it dry up with time. Is it dangerous to keep the fluid in there without the surgery. Where will the fluid go? Meantime as I think about it I have been put on Roxithromythacin antibiotic tablets for a month most likely to continue for the next 3 months. I'm also on Telfast and Montelukast Will this help? Please advise its really affecting my confidence especially when the sinus is infected it drops and smells whilst having headaches, itch eye, itchy nose. I feel surgery is not helping me. Sinus inflammation is your body's alarm going off. Figure out why sinus inflammation exists in the first place. Start a food diary and write down every thing that you eat and body's reaction . Could there be mold in the house/workplace ? Dust mites? My friend had bad migraines and sinus issues, for years, finally figured out it was cat's dander. My other friend just stopping dairy and wheat, sinus issue gone. Avoid surgery whenever possible. If you must get it in writing that the ENT will not touch your turbinates. I have had two episodes of chronic sinusitis that required surgery last year. Ruled out allergies yesterday, and results were the same as the two tests I had before both surgeries (moderate positive to dust). I know sinusitis can be mistaken for migraines, but this has not/likely is not the case because my pain is not relieved by OTC pain relievers for headaches. My sinus surgeries were six months apart in 2018, and my current sinus infection that has not been solved by lifestyle changes or medication (OTC and antibiotics) but I had no sinus problems after my second surgery in October (10 mo window). Because I’ve had on/off recurrent sinusitis for two years, I KNOW what a sinus infection versus headache feels like (never had migraines despite various ENT docs over the years wanting neurological workup, where the neurologists always said my problems are not neurological). PCP prescribed antibiotics after a week of not responding to home measures (Day/NyQuill, saline’s rinses, Flonase). No improvement after first antibiotic so PCP prescribed 2nd antibiotic which made me vomit. Hopefully the ENT can help with a nasal endoscopy, culture, and maybe a CT scan.

I had a septoplasty. It helped a lot. My ENT did not break and reset my nose as every online video seemed to suggest. A few years later, an allergist looked into my nose and said, "Your septum is really curvy." Uh... what? I asked this same ENT if there was a surgery to cut back on post-nasal drip. He said the risks outway the benefits, and that they're often not very effective. Thoughts? I get a lot of sinus headaches--or at least, almost all my headaches are on my forehead, some lower than others. I've thought about having a CT scan. As a side note, if COVID can get somewhat under control, which doesn't seem to be the case in some areas, I plan on going back to allergy shots.

I went to an ENT because my wife complains I snore but otherwise I have no issues breathing. I got a scan and the surgeon told me based on my scan I need sinus surgery. I told him I can breath fine and he said that's because I dont know any better because I've been living with my sinuses this way. Seems fishy, too quick to recommend surgery especially when my issue isn't with problem breathing

I've had life long sinus/tonsil issues. When I turned 25 allergies kicked in hard. I couldn't even eat tree fruit anymore, itchy swollen throat and mouth. Started getting sinus infections every 2 months, couldn't get any air through nose and tonsils would swell, literally gagging for air. Meds didn't work after first dose, and made it worse. Primary doctor advise against surgery, immediately changed doctor only to get another that advised against it. I insisted, CT didn't reveal any structure issues but I was lucky to get a good doctor who also performed surgery on my father. (Gotta get a good doctor) Life has been 110% better, haven't had sinus infection since. Still have allergies which was really bad the first year because my sinus were now wide open, burned like hell but worth it.

I went to the allergy dr and was tested for everything and the results came up negative. I feel like the pressure makes me feel drained and more tired than I actually am. It also seems to take forever to get going pretty much every time I get up because of the pressure. At one point I started wondering if I was just depressed. Really trying to figure this situation out. It’s definitely ruining my life.

I have had fussy, stuffy sinuses for many years, and I use a cpap machine with nasal pillows. In May 2021 I was hospitalized for a digestive problem and had an ng tube inserted 2 separate times for several days. Ever since then I must use a decongestant spray every night in order to use my cpap machine. I don’t get severe infections, just slight thick colored mucous. I also had a molar extraction in April 2021 and continue to have weekly drainage from the area. I also have a deviated septum. I’m considering a balloon sinuplasty to alleviate my congestion.

Thank you for this. I was curious what your advice on surgery would be for those with nasal polyps. Also, if you have any advice on what to do about recurring rhinoliths. My immunologist and ENT both seem to be at a loss on what to do about rhinoliths, as they are rare for the most part. I had an exhaustive surgery (4 hours) to remove nasal polyps with the hope that I would be able to smell and taste again at full capacity. This did not happen. Instead, I am now having problems with rhinoliths and my ENT removes them while I am in the office after he numbs my nose, but they keep coming back. Some come out on their own when I blow my nose on occasion, while others seem to need his intervention for removal. Thank you again for such great advice on surgery and when NOT to have it.

I’ve had the same experience and I swear it felt like a nail/spike being driven through my head above the eye. Excruciating pain on the descent and if it happened one time I’d go with migraine but this happens to me every time I take a jet that travels at high altitude. On descent, it starts all over again and has created an anxiety of flying as a result. Over the years I’ve been able to min,I’ve the pain by taking decongestants starting w4 hrs before my flight and then Tylenol the day of the flight. The pain still happens but instead of being an 11 on a scale of 1-10, it drops to about a 6.

I've had 3 sinus surgeries... the first surgery (cryosurgery of turbinates and septoplasty )- the entire experience was hell - from the anesthesia to the pain, took forever to wake up in recovery, kept passing out and projectile vomiting blood, and 2 month recovery (was a flight attendant unable to fly as was not healing). Second surgery at dif hospital was better but still not great. 3rd surgery at same hospital as 2nd but dif doctor helped, however I have deviated septum and one side is always "plugged" and have to sleep with cones up my nose to keep open... After all of this, I found out that I have narrow eustacian tubes and that's what causes my nausea flying and the problems, more so that requiring sinus surgery. If I had only had the last surgeon, I'm sure I wouldn't have had to go thru this 3 times...
