Basically what you made with the gallium lego man is "St. Elmo's Fire" which is a plasma discharge when there is great electric potential but not enough to make a spark. It's usually seen on ship masts and tall objects right before a lightning strike! I actually created this effect when I was younger when I rubbed socks across the carpet at my house and place a block of staples near where I rubbed (I was an interesting kid 😛).

Fun fact: the "ball" on the top acts as a faraday cage for the top brush, which means that the brush isn't affected by the voltage of the ball, but can keep delivering electrons to it regardless. The limiting factor is corona discharge through the air, which the rounded surface helps minimizing.

But wood is very conductive when high voltage is passing through it , so standing on a piece of wood is pretty much the same as standing on the floor directly , won't make any difference . On the other hand , glass works quite well as a non conductive material .
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 5 жыл бұрын
@Luminol Sintesis The wood is irrelevant, it's only to stand on, as long as it's placed on the jars, you'll be very well insulated from the ground. I know this for a fact.

The electrical breakdown voltage of air is 3,000 V/mm. Some of the sparks were almost 3 inches (75 mm) long = 225,000 V. Yikes! Static electricity does not carry any current. Rather than using bare skin, if you had held and used a metal object in your hand to discharge the spark, it is likely you would not have felt any effect.

I should have stated that static electric discharges do not carry a significant current, in regard to affecting human physiology. The current carried is in the microamp range; not enough to cause lasting harm to an individual. (The total energy discharge is in the millijoule range.) The effect observed with the gallium was only due to the sharp edges that caused the eletricity to discharge quick enough so that it didn't make sparks , also known as the Coronal Discharge effect, nothing to due with the material itself being gallium.

the different effects from discharging in different metals is because of what is known as the Fermi energy. this characterizes how easy it is to remove electrons from the metal. gallium has a high Fermi energy and it is this that not only causes the early discharges, but it also contributes to it's low melting temperature properties

I'm not a scientist, but I did really well with it in school. About that Gallium and the plasma affect. I think what is happening there is that because Ga's melting point is so low, the electrical arc is vaporizing the Ga and igniting it. Or at least, that's the simple expression of my hypothesis. I do know that even a small static spark (like from walking across the carpet and touching a light switch) is several thousand degrees - easily enough to melt the Ga.

Lol I just started learning this topic in science today Edit: during the lesson my teacher had to use a hair dryer to dry out the belt. How does moisture in the air effect static electricity?
@rusiraalwis5975
@rusiraalwis5975 5 жыл бұрын
Will Healy I think moisture/water neutralises the positive and negative energy, I think. If your teacher said that it was to dry the belt, I might be right, but if sensei didn’t say so, it might be to make it easier to conduct the energy.

On the gallium lego, the small arcs look like St Elmo fires, discharging in the air by corona effect. Then you're not discharging as much current when it arcs with your knuckle, and don't get zapped as much as with the metal table.

What's interesting, a little over metal bowl the electrons start to build in one spot and they flow to this point, which is visible on this film right about here: 2:48 (look at ground bowl)

Howmuch voltage can your body hold befor it becomes to dangerous and you can risk your health? Can you even reach that voltage with the vandegraaff?
@dankpiep5339
@dankpiep5339 5 жыл бұрын
I think you can't really hurt yourself with this, since it's current that is deathly and not really the voltage. You can compare it to a taser, it has a really high voltage, but a really low current.
@jaykoerner
@jaykoerner 5 жыл бұрын
@@dankpiep5339 your a bit off with your explanation, you are right that current is what is dangerous, but that just because current is just voltage times amperage, aka wattage, it is neither the voltage or the amperage that kills you just how many watts are being dissipated through your body
