With Jayne filming me as I talk to the camera - I'm hardly inconspicuous as I shoot candid photos of people on the market. This is the bit most photographers new to the genre often find hardest so in this video I'm going to show you how I go about it.
When shooting candid street photography I suggest taking a friend along. It's great to have someone to hold a spare camera body or lens - but you might find having someone with you builds your confidence. Occasionally I've had people come and ask what I'm photographing or why I'm photographing them - but not in a threatening way. Just be honest and up front about what you're doing, and send them some photos maybe.
A buddy can also be handy in helping you achieve some great people pics - check out the video and see what I mean.
Light is as important as ever so keep your eyes peeled for places where there's some good light for people photography - then wait for something to happen in it. If you need help with finding good light we've got loads of free lighting tutorials - suggest you begin with www.photographycourses.biz/goo...
I think photographing people unawares is an integral part of street photography. If you're into people watching it's probably the ultimate.

Thank you Mikael. I don't usually give specifics because the correct ISO is the one that is correct for the situation you are in at the time. If you set the same ISO as me chances are it won't work because the light will be different. However lots of you have asked me to include more of this kind of info and it's starting to go into the films we make moving forward... :-)

Was at Hopton on Sea yesterday as my mum and gran are staying there for the week and I figured I'll go with dad to them as it'll be a great place to take my camera. Where the caravan was, it's fairly close to the cliff edge and is always someone walking past. Was some great shots I could mentally envision but was so worried of confrontation. I did get a good shot of a dog walking down with a tennis ball in it's mouth though. The owner was a little way behind the dog so didn't see me take a shot lol. Also is no knowing who will have an issue and who won't. Great video as always Mike!

I agree - photography isn't about any DSLR camera. Virtually all my personal favorite images I took on my phone. And phones are perfect for street photos. However most of the people who watch our vids are DSLR users and we make films about whatever they ask us to. Going to be making more soon which won't have a DSLR in sight.

Thanks Mike for the great video. It is a great learning experience from your tutorials. I agree with others in that it is sometimes difficult to take photographs of people in India as well. However, I find it easier to take photographs of people at fairs, like hawkers selling goods, or cooking something. They do not oppose. I particularly like taking photographs of little kids in the mountain villages here. They are extremely sweet and always up for posing.

It's a good exercise in being creative with your composition because you can't zoom, but any lens that gets you a great image is perfect. It's not the lens that takes the photo - it's the photographer's ability to work with whatever they have. I've seen some awesome street photography taken on a phone. Whatever you have will be perfect...

Some shots I took for this series were taken at 50mm. I prefer to choose a focal length to achieve a look I want rather than restrict myself to just one. There's nothing wrong with only using a 50mm. Actually it's a great creative exercise in making the photographer find images which work for that length.

I notice a lot of comments saying it's the wrong lens for SP. I don't think there's a 'right' lens for any photography. All lenses give different characteristics to an image so I recomend using the lens that gives you the characteristics you want to achieve in the photo you're taking. If you achieved what you wanted then you used the right lens for you at that time.

Great video, I like it a lot. Looks like people in Britain are quite relaxed when they recognize getting photographed. That's different here in Switzerland or Germany. I don't know how the legal situation is in Britain, but German law says, that you have to sign a model contract with every person who can be identified on your pictures. That means: Every person whose face is identifiable. That's a ridiculous law, but since people got more and more familiar with this law, it's much more difficult to shoot on the street. I love situations like you showed them in your video, on flea markets or similar places. Regards from Switzerland.
@MikeBrowne

Thanks Mike Flick - In UK you can shoot pics without a release form provided you don't sell them. Most folks are ok in situations like markets and street performers, not quite as relaxed on the city streets though.

Hi pelagiamusic - I agree with everything PSGrafixTV said. Personally I don't like using the LCD on any camera and prefer the optical viewfinder. Also on my cameras I can't shoot an image from Live View mode. I only use it for checking compositions when shooting commercial interiors. That doesn't mean it's wrong to use it - but what PSGrafixTV said about camera stablilty is certainly an issue when holding the camera at arms length. - Mike

I don't know exactly what the privacy laws in the US are on this so sorry you'd have to ask someone who would know like a professional photographic organisation legal department. To be honest its rare I shoot street photography except for myself usually when I'm travelling. These were done only for the tutorials it wasn't a job, and if I were to sell these images for advertising etc then in the UK I'd need to have release forms signed by the people in them.

Why thank you madam (he said in best British accent) If the images are to be sold via a library or as art prints etc then a model release must be signed and whatever payment is agreed entered onto it, that could be some image files, a percentage of earnings, a fee... Just make sure you agree and sign something with identifiable people in the image. Especially as you're in the US because you guys love a court room ;-)

Enjoyed the video Mike. I'm surprised how many negative comments there are considering the brevity of the video. I think the point you make at the end, where you say that after a day out, if you get 3 good shots you're doing pretty good, hits the mark. Some might consider the use of a telephoto breaks some unwritten rule in SP but to me, street photography is not about being in the subjects face all the time and then trying to skillfully avoid confrontation, but rather to catch a moment. Thanks

its alot easier to focus and see what you are taking photos of(especially outdoors in sun), and it also helps save alot of battery instead of having the LCD on all the time displaying a constant video of what the camera is seeing. it can also help keep the camera more stable when taking shots due to the way we hold the camera up to our face. i also find that it tends to help me concentrate more on what im photographing because there are no other distractions.

Great series about street photography, man! I always like street photography. I think the risk of getting punch in the face makes it way more fun (in Indonesia it sure can happen). And to make it more difficult, I only use 50mm lens (because I don't have other lenses :( thinking 'bout buying another tho) and have to be creative with the angle and the length every time I take the photograph at the right moment. Is it 50mm alone is enough? Or any advice for the next lens to buy?

Thank you +omaroji I've done lots of street / people photography in Asia and never had a problem Though I haven't been to Indonesia yet.. 50mm is a good length because it has a nice natural look to it. Mike, I love your video. My friend suggests me to shoot street photography with 80mm/2.8, it will give me same image in the frame, with similar depth of field if I use a bigger aperture ( vs here you are using smaller aperture like 5.6 or higher with your 200mm to give you small dof, right?), and I can have a slower shutter speed to avoid hand shake, but I need to get closer to your subject to give it same image in the frame. Is that right and what other difference of 80mm/2.8 vs 200mm/with smaller aperture ?

This may be an 'noob' question, but is there a reason, other than maybe the sun/glare, to use the viewfinder like you do instead of the LCD screen? I tend to rely on the LCD to more comfortably compose my shot and also it allows me to see the exposure adjust in the preview. Thanks!

Hello again Mike. I have noticed in your work that you use several different brands of gear, i.e., Nikon, Sony and Fujifilm. Which is truly your favorite? Also, how do you determine your favorite? Is it comfort and ergonomics, the lenses that are available or simply, Image Quality? I imagine at your professional level, the latter is probably true. Thanks for the great work and info. In addition as an amateur enthusiast I have used many different brands and seem to have found a home with Canon. Just my own personal preference. Thanks again Mate. Cheers, Tony :)

great video Mike.... i also practice street photography and i can say one thing u ve really done a good job here though u missed a very good shot at 6:50 the guys to ur left..... but i can feel that moment; u simply can not loose ur concentration up ur subject; even though something very interesting happening right next to u..... thus we always miss lots of good moments..... that is street photography..... u can not say this is going to happen.... requires lots of concentration and patience.....

Hmm Mike, I thought you went for basic equipment to show that you don't need the best to get the shoot. Ain't the 70-200 f2.8 a bit high degree for that?

you can use anything Linus Forss - for street stuff I prefer not to use a DSLR at all but as most people who follow the channel use them I did in this vid. I used the 2.8 because it was in the bag at the time actually...
