Here is the process behind doing the valve stem seals and timing chain replacement. Turbo doesn't need to come off unless you drop a valve like me, or are intending on cleaning up oil residue/buildup, like in the video.
It's hard when you first do the job, as time goes on and you do the timing job it's not too bad. I like doing valve stem seals as it's satisfying but is a bit long and gets tiring.
Hopefully this video helps you with your MINI adventure!
Thanks to Chad Miller ‪@detroittuned‬ for making an awesome complete timing chain kit!

Good stuff brother. Nice to see the younger generation tackling these motors. A couple of pro tips I'll share with you @ 13:50. That tool is totally unnecessary. Believe me, I've been servicing these things for 21 years now, never used the tool after I discovered this method: Take a cat claw or upholstery tool that has a split tip. Go under the springs and unhook each leg from their perch. A slightly angled cat claw is the perfect tool here. You can unhook each spring which relieves the tension. Then, just remove the entire eccentric shaft, with the spring and journals attached as one assembly. Three bolts need to be undone and boom, it's off. Replace these bolts. Never reuse any of the mounting bolts for the eccentric shaft or the cam journals. Saves you easily half an hour of labor both ways, plus the cost of that goofy tool. Which, whomever invented that crappy tool, needs to be taken behind the shop and beat with a prybar.

Which bolts need to be replaced instead of reused? There at the end of the cam shaft by the Vanos gear? I know the bolts that attached the cam gears and crank pulley all get replaced with new. Just not sure if you're talking about 3 other bolts that need to be replaced as well? The journal bolts too? Those aren't torqued to yield are they? Removal of the camshaft was skipped in this video, but I've seen it in others. Just want to verify which bolts I need to get to replace. Edit: Looks like a 8mm diameter metal rod with a notch cut out of the end is a great way to grab the spring and move it around. I saw it on a video that was "MINI VVT how To install spring DIY".

Wow thank you so much for the video! Can you please write down all the values of the torque required to replace the timing in N18? I'm afraid of missing something. By the way, if needed for example 36.8ft-lbs + 180 degrees is required. So the meaning is that after tightening 36.8ft-lbs the screw should be turned another 180 degrees without torque?

Great video, I need a question answered if i may, I have a 2009 base cooper, non s model, No compression on cyl 1. Engine has a rattle when running, Have looked and valves are not broken, bent? maybe? Could a failure in the vvl cause a valve to stick open? And would it make noise. just about to pull the head, it appears to have a burnt valve, but that doesnt explain the rattle? any help would be apprectiated. Also if you pull the spark plugs out there is no rattle? crazy i know .

Would it be better to set crankshaft bolt to pretension torque (no stretch), then torque the tensioner to spec, pretension the intake and exhaust Vanos gears (no stretch yet)? Once you have everything in place, but no stretch on the bolts, manually test the timing of the engine by turning the crank 4 times and seeing everything line back up with the pin and camshaft locks. I know once it passes the timing check, you'd have to lock it back up to finish the bolt stretching, but if there was a problem you wouldn't have to replace the bolts. Edit: The order you tightened in makes sense as the best order. I can see it ensured the Vanos / camshaft should be in timing, just mainly asking if it would be a better precaution to do it in the same order you did, but do it once before stretch, manually turn the crankshaft, verify timing without running the engine, and then lock it back up to put the stretch on the bolts just to be extra careful?
@zevisgarage
@zevisgarage 9 ай бұрын
Yeah often they advise using the pretensioner but I just use the actual tensioner @ torque spec to make sure the timing is set firmly

Getting ready to do this job this weekend. Is the intake manifold removed because of the intake Vanos solenoid replacement? Or can the intake Vanos solenoid be removed without taking off the intake manifold? I'm not planning on dropping any valves, so hopefully I won't need to fish any back up. :) I'd really like to not take the intake manifold off.

@derekshane8786
@derekshane8786 11 ай бұрын
Ahhh ok that makes sense. Did you use a pin for the flywheel at all? If you did, are you removing that when you reinstall the crank bolt to change cylinders or did you only use the pin after everything was done to line up timing? Hope that's not a stupid question and makes sense.

Just as a word of advise to anyone planning on tackling this job. If you pull the valve cover and don't notice any of the guides cracked or broken, or any broken guide pieces, or the timing chain being stretched, it's probably just the tensioner. Replacing the tensioner is a a hell of a lot easier than doing the whole timing chain. Timing chain could take a few days if it's your first time, and on home tools. A tensioner will probably take an hour or two on average.
@zevisgarage
@zevisgarage 9 ай бұрын
I personally would never leave the guides in place and only replace tensioner. Parts are less than $250 to guarantee another 100k miles. I’ve pulled apart tons of these engines and 80% of the time they have broken guides, even if it’s just a smaller piece.
