Many homesteaders dream of owning a family cow but worry about keeping such a large animal on a smaller farm or homestead. The mini jersey gives most of the benefits of their larger COWnerparts ;) but in a smaller package.
Miniature jersey cows need less hay, can be compleatly grassfed, and can yield a gallon to 3 or more gallons of fresh raw milk a day.

We raised mini steers for a couple years when the kids were small and needed a small project for 4H. A mini milking cow sounds perfect!

+Art and Homesteading so how much feed (hay and grain) do you go through with your jersey?

She eats about 1/2 (sometimes a bit more) of a small bale per day this winter (and no grain), but last year when she had a new calf she ate about 1 per day. We're only getting 1 1/2 gallons per day right now, but we were getting 4 gallons last year. So, we get out what we put in, but 4 gallons/day had us making cheese every single day, and it got tiresome sometimes.

I miss having fresh milk I grew up on a 197 head full size Jersey dairy ..we kept 2 after my parents sold it... kept them until my sister ( youngest) graduated highschool.

Loved this on mini jerseys! I only have .6 acres and part of that is house and driveway. I also have chickens. Want a cow sooo bad but don't think I have enough room for one! Thanks for the video!!

You really only need an acre per cow as many beef farmers will tell you even though they over populate one pasture but 6 acres will be plenty for at least 1 cow maybe 2!

I miss fresh Jersey milk😞 I grew up on a 198 head full size dairy. To me nothing like a Jersey with a white blaze and a set of those curved horns that only Jersey's have ..i understand those with kids or if your uncomfortable around horns ..not all ours did and those that did we were taught not to stand in front of them ..even though all ours were docile they still have a mind of their own ..especially when it comes to sweet feed at milking time.

ok, I am ignorant....why does the jersey produce more in the summer? It needs less calories to stay warm so more to make milk or because it has just delivered a calf and ready to go again? I love the cute look of the jersey, so beautiful and feminine to me. My wife loves the highland cow though. I want the jersey for milk...mostly ice cream!! She wants the highland as a....pet. I hear that the highland has a high butter fat too so that could be a winner. I am so glad you guys do these videos! I need to figure out when all these work shops are occurring so we can fly up to attend one.

Do these cows need to be pregnant to produce milk or do they do it all the time based on age and hormones?

All cows need to have a calf in order to produce milk (like humans as well.) Some can produce milk for a long time (extended lactation) others will dry up in a year or so to prepare for their next calf.

Filtering would not remove the bacteria introduced on the straw and detritus, so I cannot recommend consuming that milk. Perhaps it could be used to feed calves.

Do you know if she lets the cow wean her baby before being milked by people? And is she strictly no slaughter family milking? I don't drink milk or agree with it but the idea of not harming a cow for dairy is a step forward and if people where to drink milk making sure the cow is safe from violence and discomfort is important.
