I saw in some other comments on here,@@Iamtongue , that you no longer liked this lens....yet here I am loving those magic images in your video. Do you still rate this? I'm asking as I have borrowed a 7Artisans 50mm f/1.1 and have been really surprised and excited by it. I love what it does. I think I want to buy one.... ..but there is the issue: I haven't looked at any other similar options yet, and in searching some out, I have reached a stuck place and wound up here. Do you still rate this lens, or rate another better? What it this lens wasn't 1-million-dollars? If you could get it for 750k instead, or say 625k? Love your humour btw, always classic and high value videos. Keep it up!

I like this lens but at the price they were at I think it was around 599$ in 2020 it wasn't worth it. i thought there were better options like the 7 artisans 35mm f0.95 or the laowa 33mm f0.95.@@stu-ax

Just a little tip, you can use burst mode and hold down your shutter while focusing, slightly turning the focus ring back and forth making sure you'll get one shot with perfect focus.

I use this lens for 95% of my cigar lounge/speakeasy event work and I've used it for so many years now that it's become 2nd nature. My keeper rate is more 80%/20% due to the time i've spent learning how this lens behaves in certain conditions. I love this lens. Pretty much my favorite. My copy is pretty sharp. Even outside the center, it's acceptably sharp for me. There is some fringing at 0.95 but it's soft and looks more natural when corrected unlike other lenses like the Fujifilm 16mm 1.4. I find focusing without peaking is much more reliable but then again, I'm very used to manual focusing because I find it faster for me to decide where the lens focuses instead of waiting for the camera to think for me. For moving subjects though, it will be challenging. Regarding the 7Artisans, it may seem identical but it's not. The 7Artisans has more aperture blades but the bokeh balls has bright outlining which is not present on the Mitakon. I find the Mitakon generally more pleasing. I shoot street photography, cafe vlogs, and have shot weddings in the past with it. My only wish is that it has aperture clicks so I can change my aperture by feel without looking over the lens.

What a great honest video. I totally agree with everything you said. I've owned mine for about 3 years now and there has definitely been a learning curve. But I've noticed after a bit of practice I'm actually getting a little bit better with it. As you said the tone and dreamy look that it produces definitely evokes emotion when you look at the images. I've gotten a few magical shots pairing it with my xt-1. But I also like it with my xt2 and I think the xt2 has a better focusing Aid than the xt-1 so it makes it a bit easier. Keep up the good work! Maybe you can try to do a review with the voigtländer 35mm f1.4 m.c. II. 🤔😉 Great video and I love the Mitakon, if you try to know what's exakt distance to the model, the focusing is less hard. A friend of mine use a Leica with a voigtländer and he nailed focus 90% of the time and most of the portraits are in moving situation. He explained me that and try it 1 week and now I nailed focus 80% of the time even in low light. Keep going 👏🏼

but who makes an f/0.95 lens with autofocus that doesn't cost thousands? I think the best you're going to get is the Sigma 16 / 30 / 56 mm f/1.4 but ... it lacks that f/0.95 Toneh 🤣 The great thing about these manual lenses though is that now Team China have proven that they can do these to a high standard and at a great price, next will come fixes to the production-consistency and hopefully also functional improvements. Fingers crossed that means we'll start to see autofocus offerings within a few years. Fingers crossed. And toes and all other extremities.

Great video with honest thoughts in it. Before Fuji I had 3 zeiss lenses (zf.2) .. 21, 35 & 100 f2. The wide and 35 were easy to nail focus and on the 21 it didn't really matter. The 100 was gorgeous in every way but the hit rate wide open was 50-50 at best. I would love another manual lens with fujifilm but am not sure because at f.95 I don't know. @@Iamtongue I was using a Zeiss Planar 50/ 1.4. It was unusable. Not sharp. It was good when you hit the spot but when loosing 50% of the images it is not worth it. The bad optical correction fools your eyes when focusing. I upgraded to the Zeiss Planar 50/2 and it has become much better. The CA on this lens throws halos on the edges that is bigger than the one of the holy spirt - no offence to relegious people here. The flares look like a swarm of jelly fish. Sorry it is worthless to me. It is an expensive paper weight for those who cannot shoot with it and I shoot manual only. My line up consists of 25/2, 35/2, 50/2 and 85/1.4 - all Zeiss now. I I have tried many manual focus lenses and I was always looking for lenses with a pleasing character and not the sharpest. @@Iamtongue I wondered how it worked for you if you basically got rid of it? Regarding to the 7artisan I would not touch it either. Beyond technical reasons, there are design elements and also political grounds why I cannot support those companies. - I find the perfomance weak wide open, especially for the doller you pay. The F0.95 is not really relevant as long as the story in the images is ok. No one ever asked what lens I have used. - If you compare the TT artisan, Mitakon and &7artisan all lenese are made in one and the same facorty. If you look closer on certain models then you will discover that many lenses are based on expired patents and designs. One of the lens brands goes all the way and fully impersonates so to speak a Leica lens. The same focussing tap, the same red dot on the mount alignment (to attach the lens to the body), and even the same engraved fronts and colours. I find this utterly disgusting. Zeiss and Cosina have both different designs. Those companies earn money on laurels they did not work for in the beginning. I am not Leica fan, I don;'t have the money for that. Yes, I have Zeiss lenses and I only buy showroom models + cashback rebates. - Then there are political issues with China: * China has copied and stolen IP for 40 years. They forced Tech transfers your parents worked for - I can sent some proof of that. * China benefits from the Universal Postal Union. That is why you pay no postage for shipments from China. * China has not opened up their market. Western companies need to have a CN partner which invites for IP theft. * China has not opened up to investigate Covid independently and they also have bought to much power in the WHO * China has not remose of dept trapping nations in Africa, South Pacifc or Latin America. * China's vaccin seems to be less effective than hoped and they are buying Pfizer for the elite wheras they are sending it around the globe. * China's propaganda in Italy while assisting there. When Covid broke out the EU shipped aid materials to China for free. When Covid broke out in the EU China sold the gear back to the EU and charged money. In Italy the Italians sung the Chinese Anthem. Would you go that far? No. * China has nuclear bombs and can fly to the moon. Why do they need any support from industrial nations? This is not a call for racism. I have been a foreigner for 20 years and I know what it feels like when a racist comment pops up. I just cannot accept it anymore that 80% of what we consume is of Chinese origin. What I also don't understand that people don't see that. People would rather steal ideas instead of being honest. Would you buy a fake Rolex would your drive around in a fake car? Probably not.
