@@AbdulRahmanSubhanAllah first, I will assume that it is a serious question, and you are not just yanking my chain., I am sure there are many interpretations. mine is that reflection is meditation, self awareness, critical judgment, insightfulness, sitting around thinking on things to determine their true nature. and how You define those things as they affect your life. ____ extra stuff. after all, the beginning of wisdom is call things by their true name. which is why today certain groups being so focused on controlling the language around us and changing the definition of words to suit their own agendas. like changing the definition of words such as man or woman, for example. I would also refer you to the George Orwell essay Politics and the English Language on that last subject. after all, as it says in the bible, in the beginning was the Word.... everything flows from that.

@KM-iv9xy

I like that one in particular. I'm a powerlifter and I thought that was so hard and grueling for years. Until I started Muay Thai, and I realized that lifting weights of my choice, at my pace, is a total leisure activity compared to training and practicing a martial art. One of the instructors explained it to me this way on my first day we when we talking about my own background. He said that weight training and fitness in general is a monologue and a spar is a conversation. In a spar you have no choice but to keep tempo and pace with your partner and it takes you to levels you simply cannot go to when training (any athletic endeavor) alone. I thought I was fierce and my own weight training is more on the intense side, but its a joke compared to a 90 minute session with lesson/spar at a legit academy

What I find very strange about Musashi is that he is an icon of Japanese culture yet, especially at the time of his life, he was very counter culture. There were certain codes samurai were expected to follow and he broke most of them. Such as showing up late to a dual to make his opponent so mad it clouded his judgement. I think his life can be described as living so close to death daily that he truly learned to enjoy life. The key is, it sounds like he never let his circumstances make him bitter and if he could take matters into his own hands he did when necessary.
@Nempo13
@Nempo13 Жыл бұрын
He lived most of his time with a sword as a Ronin as well. He had multiple masters and lords, even flat out refused an order to a lord's face. When pushed on it he told his lord "I will not tarnish my honor following your decree." You did not order anyone to do something you yourself are too afraid to do, you also could not order a man to do something that was against the code. Most samurai would commit seppuku in defiance, Musashi straight up said 'no' to the man's face in a room full of his warriors outing the man as honor-less there and then. The lord was infuriated, Musashi simply turned and left. The fool lord then drew his sword and moved to attack Musashi in the back only to get cut down by 3 swords from others. Attacking a man's back was so dishonorable that even those who were his friends stabbed his corpse. I also love that he dueled a guy while using a damn boat oar.

"Humans do not need to be crazy to murder. They just need to believe they are right." --- "Life is a long stream of embarrassments." "A future is not given to you. It is something you must take for yourself." - Yoko Taro. Those two last sentences, those ideas, alongside Musashi's, are ones that are pulling me out of depression, little by little, and finding a middle ground between safety and recklessness. The first one is a constant reminder that I may be wrong and commit gross errors based on false judgment, as well as a reminder of the extent the error can become. It is a reality at the scale of all of humanity, yet also a reality at the individual level.

@@oz_jones True, it gets easier. Thanks for the encouragement! I picked up working out with a friend who's been working out for more than 13 years now and coaches me. I discipline myself to work out three times a week, despite the amount of pain he puts me through. No pain, no gain! --- Here's another piece of wisdom I gleaned from the aforementioned Yoko Taro. You know the saying "well-ordained charity begins with one's self"? Rephrased, it means there is an order to who to be charitable to, first one's self, then others. The full meaning is that first, help yourself as if you are someone else you are responsible for helping, and once you are capable, you shall help others. You cannot help anyone else if you aren't doing well enough yourself. And that is the secret to a type of fulfilling, meaningful life: helping others. Sacrificing a bit of time, a bit of one's self, to make an impact in other people's life. Even if there's no thankfulness. Charity doesn't need thankfulness, sacrifice doesn't need recognition, because the point isn't to look good in the eye of the onlooker, the primary goal is the uncorrupted gift of help itself. I have yet to reach that point. I am helping myself now, both physically and mentally. One day I'll be "helped" enough to help others.

Preoccupied with being a monk, you can give out platitudes without ever having to experience the love of a woman or children or the leaves, trees and forests that go with it.

Some people wish they had a wise figure to look upon, father, teacher or a friend but with today's technology we can have all of the wisdom to learn. But what's having all the wisdom if we don't execute them. I remind my Soul to transfer all that wisdom to my daily life.

Exactly! After listening to the wisdom don’t just accept or decline it. Contemplate on what you’ve heard and discover on your own how it works for your life… and if it’s worth it to make it your truth or not.

these are so beautiful... no doubt that after being nothing but a wanding bandit, but after being taught by Takuan, imprisoned for years in a dungeon with a candle and zen books as only companions... these quotes are from a zen master. every single quote is a perfection. every single word is a perfection. a perfection, in a realm of imperfection. it is impossible for me to pick 1 quote and 1 quote only... if i had non choice, i would take this one : 'one thousand days of lessons for discipline, ten thousand for mastery.' musashi eventually came out of his dungeon, being the master of himself. what a deliverance.

"You can only fight the way you practice".- This can mean that all challenges are set in such a way we're able to overcome them. Whatever conflict we're facing; we are skilled to find the right solution for it. Everyday our character is tested by simple issues seeming quite trivial like waiting in line during a traffic jam; the bus getting delayed; a pile of files accumulated once we get back to work on Mondays; the kids doing such a pandemonium in the house; the products that we need now, are out-of-stock; customers being rude to each other; etc. Nevertheless, these conflicts test our character to become stronger, but each conflict is somehow set in a way we are capable of finding the most assertive solution. The first step to analyze and/or to react appropriately is to remain patient which is also called calming our mind.
