Well one scary thing about layoffs is you might accidentally fire the creative people. Theres very few legitimately creative people. If you have a good set which they clearly do all their games are bangers they need to keep a tight grip on this. Most companies fire to save money and just like they the few creative people are gone

@@tristenatorplaysgames6833 It also helps that FromSoft gains more and more respect, accolades and sales with each title which brings in even more investors. By sticking to their core values and Miyazaki's genius they've put themselves in a very healthy position. Not trying to defend them but those big studiks that do layoffs do so partially because of capitalistic greed, yes, but also because many of their recent games have been failures and somekne has to take the fall.

his description of beauty made Caelid immediately pop into my mind, as much of a meme as it has become, it has exactly the feeling he described, how this hellish nightmare land filled with monsters still makes you empathize with it's story, how this place suffered and transformed into this due to the war from the demigods and the releasing of basically a magic nuke on top of it, yet having things like Sellia still existing and Radahn's army enduring and fending off the rot and monsters from redmane castle, it's the little details

I'm not even praising him here, it's a well-known fact that he's annoying about this kind of thing and a very controlling director (hence why he now doesn't even want to supervise other projects because he knows he can't stop himself from taking it over, his attention to detail isn't just a quality, it can also be a flaw). In the same way, the design changes ARE important, we know that Miyazaki has talked at length about the kind of designs he likes in interviews. Again, if you think that's irrelevant, then obviously you're not going to care much about Miyazaki and his work. That's not even a criticism of your personality or intellect, you don't have to like the guy or his work.

A point about layoff in Japan is that Japanese companies rarely lay their employees off, even when facing enormous financial adversities, they still try to keep people. This phenomenon is in part due to the stringent labor laws in Japan but also in part due to the Japanese culture. Not having many layoffs in Japan also somewhat translates to very high difficultly when an employee tries to quit the job outright or tries to quit the job and join another company. In Japan, there are specialized companies that exist for sole purpose of quitting the job for you so that you, as an employee, don't have to face the hassle and embarrassment of quitting.

It's also kind of the Incentive for giving your "Life" to the Corpo ( Not joking ) and not thinking only about yourself which is seen as something "Negative" unlike in America which is every Crook for itself. This Hive Mind Ideology is Deeply Rooted in Japanese Society.

I described dark souls like that before I knew of the quote so he did his job and I share this ethos. Dark Souls 3 was on its A game in that regard with the bosses. Yhorm the giant and the twin princes is just fantastic examples of beauty in the absolutely depressing. Bit of an out of left field example is from Inuyasha with Inuyasha father inside that weird realm. A great warrior in stasis in some weird pocket dimension. Could easily have made it pretty sad and grotesque but they chose to make it beautiful. You really feel the majesty of what was once a powerful demon. Been so many years since I seen it at a very early age but I think about it every once in awhile because it captures what Miyazaki is getting it.

There’s a similar beauty in the fight against the Nameless King. One of the last gods of the old Pantheon of this world that’s begging to be put out of its misery, for the cycle of light and dark to continue. By embracing a different path than the other gods, by choosing to fight with the dragons after having slayed so many of them in war, he has survived and possibly managed to thrive in the world albeit clearly he too is damaged as his face has become a skull due to a multitude of factors, but he remains as a powerful combatant that has outlasted his father and he is still joined by his companion, one of the if not the last dragon. The Nameless King’s companion is treated with dignity as he lays dead on the ground; he gives a moment of silence to a creature that has likely been at his side for a very long time, before he strikes to dragon with his weapon to use its soul to strengthen himself so that he can defeat you. The fight gives off the feeling that the Nameless King was looking for one last challenge, one last battle before he left a world that he’s been in for so long.

There's a small brewery in my town owned by a man who used to be a teacher, who quit his teaching job despite being one of the most well-known and beloved teachers at the high school, so he could pursue his dream of running a brewery. After he did that, the brewery has been incredibly successful. It is one of the most popular places to go for food and drink in town, and my dad and I often go to hang out. The reason I bring this up is because my dad said something today that I think really applies here. He said "It makes me happy when good people who deserve success, not only get success, but surpass those who don't deserve it". And I think that quote can and does apply to Miyazaki. He is a man who truly cares for his employees and is uncompromising on creating his vision. That level of creativity and passion which he knows is only possible because of his team that bring his ideas into reality, is the kind of thing that deserves success. And it makes me happy that a man like Miyazaki has attained such success, and with Elden Ring, surpassed other CEOs of companies that do not deserve the same success he has gotten.

This “ethos,” “aesthetic,” and “ugly in beauty” that Miyazaki pursues is greatly evident in Elden Ring’s bosses as you (Rat Lord) mention. For instance, most of the Demi Gods are inflicted with a curse from birth or out of their own volition. For instance, Morgott was born with the “gift” of the primordial crucible, only to be perceived as an abomination by the people of Leyndell, yet still holds fast in maintaining its glory as its ruler, although lost. There is an aspect of ugliness within his design, yet is dignified in the fact that he holds firm to his beliefs and does not let his circumstances falter him. On the other hand we have our beloved General Radahn. He was not “cursed” since birth like Morgott (unless you want to call his heritage as a giant to be a curse?), but cursed his fate when engaging Malenia in The Shattering war. This was his choice, and resulted in the consequence, the ugliness to where he became corrupt by the scarlet rot. Although he suffers this ailment, he isn’t rotting on the outside, but from within, starting with his feet. There is dignity in his design in the fact that he still wears his immaculate armor and how his steed, Leonard still wishes to ride with the master who took care of him all these years.

Miyazaki has absolutely succeeded in creating intensely beautiful art. Possibly my favorite artist period. Much gratitude towards him! How lucky we are to have been born at the same time as from!

Don't forget the poor concept artists, who do most of the traditional artwork (on his suggestions) before he implements them in 3D. In my opinion the real magic is on their paper.

Godrick is a loathsome person, but many can relate to this feeling of inadequacy and desire to become someone greater. Yet, its hard to deny that his weakness is a product of his own failings as a person. He just lacks the conviction and integrity to be become the lovable underdog of the story and instead, he just die as a pathetic and entitled jerk who stole others' strength to fuel his meager ego.

On the topic of layoffs, I think it's extremely important to point out that the expectations for a Japanese developer are very different from those in the western world, particularly those in the USA. Everyone is paid much less than a westerner would expect as well as working far longer hours as well. The average salary, apparently, of FromSoftware staff in 2022 was ¥3.41 million, which is around $25k USD (in 2022, the Yen has fallen since). It's also not uncommon for people to work 60 to 80 hours and not get paid overtime or have overtime only paid at half rate. During crunch, Japanese developers frequently sleep at the office and spend literally all waking hours at work. Sure, layoffs are rare, but there is a massive tradeoff that I doubt most developers in the USA would take. Working culture in Japan in general is brutal.

Stop spreading misinfo. Work culture is dramatically improving in Japan. It's required by law to pay 70% higher hourly wage for each hour of OT. That amount doubles in holiday and triples in festival holidays
@Mpstark
@Mpstark 14 күн бұрын
@@sailingadventurer This was widely reported at the time of FromSoftware publishing Elden Ring, I can't seem to post a link to sources, but a quick google will get you there, article named: "How much does From Software crunch?" I cannot find any sources on the 70% higher hourly wage required by law. I did find the Japanese Labour Law wikipedia page that states: > Since 1987, Japan has adopted the principle of a 40-hour week. If people work over eight hours per day, 40 hours per week, or on holidays (and one "weekend" day a week), or at late night (10pm to 5am), they are entitled to overtime pay. Under the Labor Standards Act of 1947 article 37, this is 25% of pay, or 35% on holidays. Since 2010, a rate of 50% overtime pay applies for people working over 60 hours a week. From what I understand, overtime is built into many Japanese work contracts, CareerConnections seems to imply that FromSoftware has 80 hours overtime per month built into the salary. I don't speak Japanese nor do I work there, just repeating what actual sources have said.

I 1000% percent agree with you in praise of Miyazaki's defense of From's employees. And I say that as someone who has done that exact same thing. Years back I was a contractor on a project with an educational technology company. Almost all of their employees were from India, working in the US on visas. This meant that, were they to be laid off or otherwise lose their job there, they would have to move back to India; this visa does not allow the worker to shop around for other jobs, it ties them to the specific company that hired them. As a result, the management there was the most tyrannical I had ever seen in my career, and wildly disrespectful towards the quality work that was being done. As a result, I directly threatened to walk off the project if a specific manager did not correct his attitude and apologize for the degrading language he used referring to our work. Fortunately, I was very critical to this project's completion, and so they had no choice but to comply, and no further such incidents occurred through the completion of the project. Not everyone often finds them in such a position of leverage. But when you do, to me it is obvious that this obligates you to use it for good. Anything less is cowardice.

One of the great things about Japan's work culture is the fact companies can't just layoff employees without a serious reason (a crime, serious work violation or some serious financial crisis that hits Japan), Japan's work culture has its downsides too but that's definitely a good thing western gaming companies should learn from them.

I think another aspect of heroic themes. Are what other characters think of each Demigod. Rhodan is still highly respected, due to the festival. Melania is reveered as well by insect creatures and people. While GIDDEON THE ALL KNOWING, is probably the only one that doesn't have respect for others. Which also adds to his character as well.
