I started this today and wished I'd watched this one more time. I forgot to loosen the pulley bolt before taking off the serpentine belt. So here's another tip for those who cant follow instructions like me. You take two 10mm open end wrenches and using one to keep the pulley from spinning you can loosen 3 of the 4 bolts from above, the last bolt can be loosened from below if you jam a 12 inch long 1/2"extension between 2 of the loosened bolts and the motor mount. I ended up rounding this one off and got it off with a vise grip. The replacement is a m6-1,0 x 10mm and are available at local auto parts stores.

Awesome video, just replaced water pump, your video helped a whole lot. Here's a tip for guys trying to get crank pulley nut off. Put your socket and breaker on nut, bungee cord bar to where it hits on suspension, then crank engine just for split second, bingo nut is loose.

Thank you very much for replying so soon, the problem was that even they marks were lining up, the CS of on the sensor way like for !/4 of an inch, I turned it just a bit to give clearance to the sensor and now the car comes on, I will see how it works. I really appreciate your help and knowledge.

I'm going to have to do this in the next day or so. I was investigating an oil leak and the alternator belt was soaking wet. I thought maybe a crank seal so without thinking took the crank bolt off and pulled it out not realizing it was the timing gear also. Since I've already done this and the car is at 225k Miles, probably time for belt 3. Thanks for your service.

Have the same make and model as you sir. But for some odd reason my water pump pulley wont come off. Bolts are off and its free just can't get it out. Gets stuck between the old pump and frame. Was thinking of jacking engine up a little more but figured I'd ask you first. Great video by the way. Thanks

Thanks for the video, I have a 2001 Galant, my timing belt broke while it was idle so I am hopeful I don't have any engine damage. I thought it would be worth the cost of the belts to see if I do. I got it apart today with the help of your video, tomorrow I will try to install the new belts. Thank You

I just did this over the course of two days and it could not have gone smoother. I did want to pass along a few tips and comments to anyone watching. I cannot emphasize that Mark is correct, MARK THE BOLTS on the timing cover, it'll make your life a lot easier. I was laying them out on cardboard in their respective positions when my 5 year old "came to help". It added another 1/2 hour figuring out which ones went where and I am still iffy on that. Loosen the water pump pulley when the serpentine belts are on then once the timing covers are off you can maneuver the pulley off the pump but remember to put it back on before the timing covers. If you do forget you do not have to disassemble anything, to shift the engine with a prybar at the right side mount to get the clearance you'll need, its a bit of a hack but will save you time. 3rd, it is so much easier to work around the front with the mount off but do not drop the engine more than a fraction of an inch otherwise you'll tear the front and/or rear motor mount and possibly the left side too. Luckily I had replacements and was going to do it anyway. If you are doing the cam cover and spark tube seals at the same time (its not a bad idea if you haven't done it yet) when reassembling make sure you put a coating of silicone lube to reinsert the boots and make sure you've got the wires correct. I reversed # 1 and 3 and when I did the initial start up had a p0303 code. It took me about an hour extra to figure out what I did wrong. Overall I would say this is 4 hour job but did it in 8 really taking my time, watching Marks videos again and making sure it was done correctly. THANKS AGAIN Mark, you saved me some big bucks and now I wont worry about the timing belt until I get to around 170,000 miles!

Mark Kapuscik Well here I am for a follow up 7 months later. When I did this job it went so smooth I was concerned that I missed something. 8,000 miles and not 1 issue until February when I noticed the NEW aftermarket harmonic balancer was starting to wobble. I got a warranty replacement and 4 weeks to the day the replacement broke, sending plastic timing cover pieces throughout the timing belt area, caused the belt to jump a few teeth and broken the crank sensor. I pulled the cam cover and rotated the engine and the valves seemed to close as they should and everything looked OK so now I am in the process of redoing this job again. $250 tow + another 250 (or so) in parts all because I went aftermarket for a critical part. Do not scrimp, it saves you nothing in the long run! I am hoping it starts on the first key turn and no bent valves, I was only doing about 20 and the engine just stopped due to the sensor breaking, no freewheeling so hopefully no bent valves. If so I will be doing this job the third time along with rebuilding the head (hopefully no broken pistons!)

Oh man...It's hard to say because that's a pretty high speed. The interference type engines rely on timing gears, chains, or belts to prevent the piston from striking the valves by ensuring that the valves are closed when the piston is near top dead center. If this is all out of sync due to the belt breaking or slipping, there is a great possibility that there is damage. All you can do is try putting on new belts & get everything back in time & pray all is okay. Good luck & hope all is good!

Hey Mark! I did a timing belt/water pump/ head gasket/intake gasket/ exhaust gasket / Crank position sensor. When i started it back up cylinder 3 was misfiring. I checked compression- 180PSI on all cylinders! Amazing! Checked for spark. That was good. Even swapped ignition coils and replaced all plugs. Checked fuel injector power and ground with a noid light. Also swapped injectors from 1 - 3. Figured maybe a vacuum leak so I sprayed injector o-rings and intake gaskets. No change in idle or anything. Really stumped on this one! Any insight would be appreciated!

One more thing to check if you are sure all marks are aligned & car is not starting. Check to see if your crank-position sensor is damaged. The magnet in mine came apart when the belt broke & definitely would have prevented the car from starting. I almost missed seeing it was damaged & only figured it out when I found the magnet stuck to a metal part of the engine. I wondered where it came from!

Mark, thanks so much for your video. I have a 2001 gallant and I am having a hard time getting the crank pulley off. I think I may have to loosen the crank bolt. Is there any harm in turning the crank bolt to the left to loosen it? Should I put it in gear? I live in Ohio and this car has never seen a garage so it is quite rusty and stuck.

U-said..."When I finished it the marks lined up but the car did not start, did one explosion and died". Did your belt break completely while driving at a higher speed? I would say 30+ mph. These engines are interference type & severe damage can result from a broken belt. Mine broke at about 5mph and hoped it could still be repaired. It was worth a try & I was so lucky there was no engine damage. I hope you are able to get your car running again too!

Sorry to hear it didn't start.In the beginning both belts are off.Start 1st aligning balance sprocket & mark.Install small belt keeping mark aligned. Next ensure oil pump sprocket is aligned w/mark using the small screw driver method and it locks. Back off again to mark. Rotate CAM & Crank & align their timing marks up. Install Timing Belt keeping all marks aligned. Rotate crank (wish I paid attention to how many turns) but believe it was on 3rd but not more than 4th.All should return & line up.

my belt is still on the silent shaft, just to worried to make a move to leave it and line it up,so if I wanted to line it up with the old belt on, do I just rotate the crank clockwise like normal until they reset? ive seen you rotate the crank on you vid to put the silent belt on and notice that your camshaft belt was not on the crank sprocket by turning to aline my 2 teeth that will not affect my tdc on my camshaft right? cus the belt is off

Originally from Mich so I know what u mean about rust. U really don't need to remove the crank pulley when changing belts unless there is something else u are working on or if it's damaged. But if you still need to remove, I would spray the bolt w/ WD40 & let it sit a hour or so. I would even try heating the bolt w/ a simple cheap heat gun then try to break it loose. Ultimately an impact gun (air or electric) or a long breaker bar should do the trick. If manual trans putting in gear may help.

thax for sharing this... can you tell me abt vibration.. my car cabin vibrate and sound and also advise for timing belt life (after hw many km. need to change belt) ??
@mkapuscik01
@mkapuscik01 10 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say about vibration because it can be a large range of things such as bad spark plug(s), ignition components, tires, wheel alignment and so on so it may be difficult to determine. A misaligned balance belt not aligned properly to the marks can also be the cause for vibration. Misaligned balance belt vibration usually disappears as the rpm increases. As far as belt replacement, you would need to check the manufacture's recommendation for your particular year/model of car because they are all different but on the Mitsubishi 2.4, it is 60,000 miles or 96,560 KM.
@danielnieves78
@danielnieves78 10 жыл бұрын
From you video did you rotate the crank shaft sprocket to install the balance belt, also you mentioned you rotated the sprocket twice after you installed the balance belt to check the timing marks without having the timing belt on, with this being an interference motor would have that not made the pistons hit the valve's.
@mkapuscik01
@mkapuscik01 10 жыл бұрын
This repair was being made not knowing if my engine was already damaged because it broke around 5-mph so I really had nothing to lose. I started out with the rear balance sprocket and crank marks lined up so when I rotated with the crank, it was enough for the belt to slip on. The rear sprocket is small so I didn't need to rotate much to get the belt on. You have to somehow get the marks all lined up anyway so I wasn't really worried when I rotated the crank afterwards by hand to recheck all the marks. If I tried this with the starter, then that may have been a different thing if alignment wasn't correct. There shouldn't be a problem because everything was aligned.

@mkapuscik01
@mkapuscik01 11 жыл бұрын
I don't think the valves are bent because I'm pretty sure it wouldn't run very good or probably not at all. Those two teeth that are off wouldn't compensate for & make you car run good with bent valves. I would imagine that 2-tweeth off on the silent shaft may not be so noticeable of a problem compared to 2-tweeth off on the timing belt but I would line everything back up the way it's supposed to be. You'd probably notice a quieter & better performance engine!
@mkapuscik01
@mkapuscik01 11 жыл бұрын
Yes that is bad news...sorry to hear that. I think the next new car I get I'll do some research first to make sure it doesn't have an interference type engine like ours & hopefully also has a timing chain. I guess interference engines are are ok if you can change the belt according to their maintenance manual but sometimes you just don't have the time or the money to take it in. There is no warning...it just breaks & ruins a perfectly good car!

When I started the job all marks where lined up but when the balancer belt came into the picture I had to turn the crank shaft, now the mark is moved, how many times do I have to turn the CS around for it to get back to the real position? does it matter how many times or only that the marks line up again?? When I finished it the marks lined up but the car did not start, did one explosion and die.

Mark Kapuscik Mark, I really need your help buddy. Just did the the timing belt job with my buddy, and everything is seems lined up, but it won’t start. It tries, but won’t fire up. Have two questions...is there anything else besides the oil sprocket that has multiple phases that can cause me to be out of time? And also, so you think it could possibly be the crank shaft censor? I ask because when the water pump was removed, coolant got all over that area, and my buddy hosed it with carb cleaner. I spent a while wiping it down and blowing it off with air. But was wondering if it could have messed up the censor causing it not to start. Really look forward to your reply ASAP. Thank you in advance

+Brandon Cooke... pretty much except you won't be messing with taking off the timing belt so that's much easier! However, you do have to take off much of the same items up to timeline 5.15 in the video just get to the sensor (remove battery, drive belts, pass-side wheel, fender splash guard, & timing cover...) but once you get to that point, the sensor is just held on by two bolts & changes out easy. Just take a good look at how it's currently installed so it goes back in the same way. Good luck

I have a 2003 eclipse rs. I have replaced both timing belts following the timing marks . And Iget a p0300 code ( random misfire). I have replaced the park plugs, wires and the EGR valve . I was told that my timing is not set correctly set is it possible that the misfire is being caused by timing? If so how do I correct the timing can you help me!!!
@mkapuscik01
@mkapuscik01 10 жыл бұрын
P0300 means a cylinder(s) is misfiring or randomly misfiring. If you just replaced the belts and now think this the cause for your misfire, recheck all the timing marks again. Also check that the crankshaft Position Sensor looks undamaged and is secure since you worked in that same area. If that all looks good, check for intake leaks. Intake gaskets are a common cause of multi-cylinder misfiring. If no leaks are found recheck/replace the spark plugs. I once put in new plugs & also had misfires afterwards. I didn't want to believe that it could be a plug issue because they were brand new. I replaced them all with another brand which ended up fixing the misfire! Other possible causes: Faulty ignition coil (s), Clogged or faulty fuel injector (s), Intake air leak, Fuel injectors harness is open or shorted, Fuel Injectors circuit poor electrical connection, Ignition coils harness is open or shorted, Ignition coils circuit poor electrical connection, Insufficient cylinders compression, Incorrect fuel pressure.

Sounds like you checked just about everything. The only thing I can think of is you mentioned swapping coil packs (between cylinder 2 & 4) but when you did that, are you sure the misfire is still on # 3 cylinder or does it now misfire at cylinder 1or 2? If the coil pack is bad, swapping them means you would still have the misfire but would show up on one of the other cylinders that connects to the suspected bad coil. You would need to have an OBD II code reader to tell you for sure if the misfiring cylinder changed. If it still shows up as cylinder 3 after the coil packs are swapped, I would try using a new spark plug wire for cylinder 3 since it could be bad and probably wasn't swapped out during your tests because it's too short! In fact, I'd try new plug wires for all the spark plugs. I also had a rough idling problem before on the Galant & tried the coil pack swap out. Sure enough it registered afterwards on the other cylinder after the swap. Just went ahead & bought a new coil pack but was like $70.00 but later seen them at Rockauto.com for around $25.00 or so. I also hate it when sometimes the problem is soooo evasive & difficult to figure out! Hope you get to the bottom of this!
