The MMORPG genre often lacks difficulty and is more and more lowering difficulty to cater to the solo player experience. Do you feel open world questing and mmo combat has become less challenging? i feel like its not necessarily that it needs to be HARD which intrepid understands but instead, that an mmorpg's difficulty should be the same thing a dnd parties difficulty would be by and large while in an area scaled to their current level being, good build creation that synergizes with your allies while also doing your role to carry out your groups plans to the best of your ability. hell i have made posts about the sort of defensive formation i would run for my caravans i will be doing in my caravansary guild which is the peak of that of thinking about what is needed and isnt needed build wise for the goal your going for while also than optimizing the peak usefulness you can get from each group member in any given plan you might come up with as well as coming up with contingencies to cover any failure or unexpected events. basically the skill/difficulty in an mmo is one that should be placed on a group of players working together rather than on each individual alone primarily which intrepid is doing with ashes of creation

*Leaving town, even leaving a main road should feel dangerous!* *AoE pulls, Mass AoE farming, Speed/Undying Runs, and Quick Quest/Commission completion times should be goals of well stocked, well-equipped, coordinated players and should receive increased reward/exp for achieving this level of play!*

Absolutely, I hope this is more prevalent around higher leveled nodes. This will require those at the higher nodes to travel out to the lower nodes to sell their lower level wares.

Soon after WoW Burning Crusades released, I found a great farming spot for my Ret-Pally, on the roof of a temple like structure. There were about 20 mobs, with fast respawn timers, and a valuable commodity drop. I could take up to 16 at a time, but generally stuck with 12, as it was very challenging. Every once in a while, a Warrior would see me surrounded and come to "Save Me". Understand, this method kept me way too busy to whisper a warning... These poor would be heroes, would literally be destroyed a second after Taunting these mobs off of me. Challenging is fun... Seeing Warriors wrecked, as my lowly Paladin thrived... Priceless.

There is definitely a fine line. I remember it taking six months to hit level 50 on my first toon in Dark Age of Camelot. At level 50, you can start your champion gear quests. It took another 6 months to get that because you can't do it alone. At the time, could barely do it unless you had a full group of 8. Getting a full group of 8 to commit to running a questline that does nothing for 7 of the 8 group members is tough.

Imo classic WOW got the open world difficulty perfect. If your careful you can solo most open world quests but grouping up speeds them up a lot since it's impossible to pull a single mob from most packs. In order to solo a quest you have to hunt for mobs far enough away from a pack in order to not pull the pack. Also almost every zone has multiple quest that do require a group depending on your level. Players should have content they can do solo since we all have days we can only log on for an hour or so but grouping should be rewarded with faster progress and access to quests that provide better loot.

I agree with this. There should definitely be some solo content. I’ve found that challenging solo content is quite satisfying especially for those times friends aren’t available

oldschool runescape difficulty, there was never smt like a difficulty attached to the dungeon/boss room, it was just managable harddd

That's why I just wait Pantheon Rise of the Fallen (even if people trash talk about it) That's the only one with the EQ vibes. I test it the 23 th march 50$ to play one week every 6 weeks that's fine.... Ashes is 250$ for probably a big mess ( or maybe nothing)

Totally agree (plus most if not all other MMOs are, as you say, mindless mob killing for the most part, so something different would be great). Ashes lends itself to the design of tougher mobs/encounters everywhere, and hopefully they can nail it. Rest and relax in town/nodes, crafting/building. Out in the wild it should be wild and dangerous from player enemies and mobs.

Def need more difficulty. I do think most grinding and questing should be doable solo but still challenge you, like Elden Ring like you said.

My favorite game design is still Ultima Online. No levels, only skill cap on how many professions you can have. You could equip top armor and sword from the start, quickly lvl up your skills to the max and you would thought okay that's it. But the difficulty was in the open world, even if you do so, you would die in a cave vs dragon, pvp gankers etc. You had to learn the game and play it carefully, now it's just time = power, that's it.

I definitely want more difficultly than we usually see. ESO's overland is a joke. It was sad to see group content like Craglorn's overland get pretty much deleted. Questing is more like reading a fan fiction than playing a game. I'm trying to think about the other side of this. I guess the other extreme is having everything so difficult nobody can accomplish anything. I could see that sliding scale of balance shutting out some people. I don't know, I would hate to try balancing games for such a large scope of people.

i like a challenge in-so-much that if I accidently pull a pat or maybe miss an interrupt things can quickly get dicey. I'm not a fan of forced grouping or being constantly resourced starved because none of those things are challenging, they're just obnoxious

I am glad the open world pve conent is challenging. I want mobs to have different archtypes, and each has their own tactics. That is where games like ESO fail. Overland content is dumb. Mobs having healers that heal melee dps or ranged attackers that cc players while melee movea in for kills. That would be amazing.

I think a 1v1 vs a mob your level should always feel risk free. Otherwise, I think it's simply too hard. One has to realize that MMOs are marathons, not sprints. You don't play in half hour intervals, you're looking at 50+ hours of mob killing just to gain any significant levels, and that's just on your way to max level. Classic WoW did it best imo. Pull one mob? Not an issue. Might have to drink or eat food before next mob, but no problem. Pull one mob while mana at 50% or hp low... might be dangerous. pull 2-3 mobs? Probably dead.

Maybe one mob should feel risk free assuming you’re geared and paying attention but yea I like the way that a 3 mob pull appears dangerous in the last stream

Agree. But then games offer some difficulty and people say that they want it more and more and more easy and then the same people complains because the game is too easy..... 🤷‍♂ That's why you need devs with a clear vision for their game and don't follow all the crying of the community, that in general, are a few that make way too much noise and is people that will always complain no matter what :) We see this happen over and over and over again in many many games....

Didn’t watch yet but difficulty is a very hard thing to balance,most peoples go to is to increase health and defense plus dmg which is often just a battle of attrition. Even shooters take this route in their pve and enemies become what’s known as “bullet sponges” some people do it well like fromsoftware but it’s a very hard issue to combat without completely screwing over the player.

Many confuse Hard and Slow. To me, Hard implies difficulty that may require friends. Slow is just that. Leveling takes time (not difficulty). A game can be easy and slow to hard and fast.

I think that both of those can be the case possibly. The difficulty is on the solo player which encourages groups, but I suggest watching the tank archetype showcase where they were pulling adds 3 at a time or so in a group of I think 3. Showed a slight challenge
