when Kim was cleaning her sunglasses and got startled by the water dripping, at first by her reaction it looked like a lens fell out until she looked up at the rain water coming in and getting on her shirt. And the turbulence looked like she was dancing. Of course you spotted the plane before Kim, you got the advantage of sitting on that side of the plane, LOL....

Hey Cris, Awesome flight. Just a suggestion, on the GoPro over your right shoulder go to settings and activate the spot metering feature. what that will do is compensate the exposure so that the view out the front windshield is not blown out and everything will be properly exposed. BTW, Kim is coming along she is picking up stuff very well. keep challenging her.

Yes, some time back, a pilot in Texas got caught short by not realizing that his screen was showing weather HISTORY rather than in real time. He flew into the worst part of the storm thinking he was in the clear. I think he crashed and didn't survive. What a shame - Kim's too young to get the "Grease" allusion - "I got chills, they're multiplyin' and I'm losin' control...."

Thanks for the response to my incorrect remark questioning if you were under maneuvering speed. I see you were near 156 going into the turbulence and then slowed further. You refreshed this in my mind so the next time I hit some good turbulence I'll instinctively check my airpeed and make any needed corrections to get below Va. Really enjoy the content and looking forward to starting my instrument rating soon. Interested in hearing more on the Aspen, I'm trying to decide if I would get two G5's or the Aspen if I upgrade, I like the larger screen area of the Aspen.

I agree with the ADS-B latency and penetrating weather, however, just because it showed you clear of the precip doesn't mean you were clear of the clouds. Radar, regardless of it being on-board wx radar, or ADS-B nexrad, only shows water droplets. If the moisture in the cloud isn't made up of droplets big enough to reflect the radar beam, they won't show. So you could be in IMC, but clear of any precip column big enough to show on radar. Any part of CBs can be bumpy as hell, as you saw, regardless of whether you're in the wet core of the storm. That's why you want to avoid overhanging anvils, and getting into the tops of storms like that in a jet, even if your radar isn't showing any returns at your altitude. And you're lucky, your C-III still works. Mine has completely gone t.u. When the 960 comes in, we're pulling the vacuum pumps and standby AI since the G5 HSI functions as a backup to the G5 AI.
@BaronPilot
@BaronPilot 3 жыл бұрын
I agree ads-b does not show clouds only shows precipitation. If you look closely when I cut to the front window shot you will see we were in precipitation.
@derekheikes6685
@derekheikes6685 3 жыл бұрын
@@BaronPilot it's hard to see on my phone, but I wasn't pointing it out to hammer you. There have been a lot of conversations online where people are talking about pulling working radar out of their plane because they have ADS-B and Nexrad. It seems a lot of people don't get how the whole thing works, especially newer pilots. Automation dependency can end up occurring in GA with folks learning now like Kim, and my wife, who have never flown without GPS, and can rely heavily on this technology. As you showed, ADS-B weather can be a great tool, and big picture/situational awareness improvement, but we can still get our butt kicked by mother nature, even if all the tools we have at our fingertips look good to go. That's the only reason I made the point.
@BaronPilot
@BaronPilot 3 жыл бұрын
Derek Heikes no worries I didn’t take it that way. I would never pull out my radar for ads-b weather. One summer in Florida and you quickly discover how far off ads-b can be. You will love the 960. If I didn’t have boots I would gladly remove my vacuum system. Replacing the CIII is on my future list too. One step at a time.
