How to Renovate a School Bus into a Tiny House / RV. Today on Modern Builds I'm starting my biggest DIY project to date. I'm turning a vintage SCHOOL BUS into a mobile TINY HOUSE on wheels!! This bus build will be a six part series, with each episode focusing on the buildout of an individual room (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room, & exterior). I'm calling this first episode the "clean slate" episode to get the bus ready for the episodes to come; I tackle the demo, design, interior paint, framing, basic electrical, and plumbing rough ins. It's a lot, but I've done my best to keep all the information as clear as possible. Thanks for watching and subscribe for more bus conversion goodness. (materials and supplies linked below)

This book is a comprehensive guide for anyone who wants to build a second unit on their property. kzfaq.infoUgkxzaRUJNcbypw-fRBDbqqz43ULIa-1EGP- It showcases various types of houses, such as garage apartments, with photos, videos, and floor plans. The book provides the square footage and the dimensions of each house, as well as the option to order the plans or customize them according to your preferences. You can choose from a range of styles, from ultra modern to cottages and A frame lake houses. The book also offers suggestions for sheds, pool houses, and office studio buildings. This book is an ideal resource for the aspiring home designer.

Suggestion for the guys trying it: Rust is the worst enemy of this type of vehicles. Always check the floor, walls and roof. Look for leaks or damage. Check the structure that holds the metal sheets and try to fix your interior structure to the steel structure (instead of the metal sheets). Unfortunately this may mean removing the floor and part of the walls. I recommend it and also look for mold. The old insulation might have some of that also. I'm not totally sold on screwing the wood beams to the metal sheet. I would prefer to create brackets and weld those to the structure, paint everything and the bolt the wood beams to the bracket. Always put a circuit/fuse box if you are mixing big metal boxes, water and electricity. You will be driving and things might break or get loose damaging the installation. You might suffer a traffic accident and a bus fire is no joke. Finally, consider that a big metal box will change dimensions with the temperature (interior and exterior). You might need to consider this in order to avoid warping or breaking wood. That also plays an important factor on reducing the noise while driving. On the mechanical side, check suspension, axel, brakes condition and lubrication on all those points. Consult a diesel mechanic and hear their ideas about the project. You even might take advantage on the original electric installation, or neumatic lines included on the truck.

I've tried to be as positive and constructive as possible, but the work that is shown on the video is a little disappointing and can be dangerous if the guys following the channel try it without a correct planning and guidance. I know that the channel is for DIYers, (damn, even my self I have been optimistically ignorant of some of the challenges I faced in my life, but I always tried to reduce the risk, at least the risk to injury others). Until today, the risk of getting hurt, sick or to injure someone else with the projects was really low. This build takes the risk to another level (I know, you have your disclaimer) I'm not comfortable on how it's presented. As your pal Four Eyes has said on his videos, designing and planning how tackle the problems and needs is the trickiest part of a build. Everybody can use a tool. Planning should have taken a bigger part of the video. Sorry for the text wall. Keep the good work, but more importantly, keep yourself safe and healthy (and help to keep the followers safe too).

If I can add think about ways to minimize weight in your build, remember your going to be hauling all this around wherever you go. Your building with the mentality of a home reno, way too many studs thinner skins, I build two of these and have learned to build thin solid panels with 3/4" furring strips and 1/4" skins. Watch a video on how they build rv's cabinets. Added solid foam in exterior walls and in walls for extra rigidity. In my mind just saying your not an electrician or plumber doesn't excuse doing bad work, the electrical dangers are just as real in a vehicle as they are in a home. As for plumbing this is where you really need to be positive of what your doing vibrations/potholes will really take a toll on these components, small leak can cause MAJOR problems down the road. Mold wood rot .... Please leave areas like this removable for servicing. Good luck with the build and please do some more research on planning and prep, IE lighting, switches, speaker wiring, water, heat/ac ventilation, exhaust fan....... before putting in the "pretty".

Before you get too deep into this project, I humbly suggest using Dow Corning Foamular (or similar) insulation board inside the gaps in the wall. It's easy to cut with hand tools and easy to apply with liquid nails adhesive. If you care about the gaps, you can fill them in with a few cans of Great Stuff spray foam insulation. Besides making the interior more comfortable, it will pay for itself by reducing the need to burn diesel to run the air conditioner.

Theres so many different things that were done wrongly or poorly I'll list them off for you; 1.Painting over the stickers when they start to sweat they'll peel off under the paint either taking the paint around it best to remove them 2.the coolant spillage when removing it you should of once turned off undid the clamp above it and let it drain that way. 3.screwing into the roof without any sealant best to use a metal washer with a nylon washer on the self tapers it'll stop any future problems of the wood rotting and such. 4.using those angles its completely pointless using those only causes more play in the walls which is typically bad in something that gets a lot of vibrations from road use to fix this stagger your spars out and drill and screw them every bit as strong and you don't have to waste your money on 100s of angles. 5. Painting the floors vinyl typically doesn't stick well to anything so spraying that primer on will cause peeling using the resin based paint was a great idea but not so much the primer and the same goes for the lack of cleaning stains and such vinyl is extremely funny whether it'll stick or not. I ain't doing this out of hate or anything like that I just want you learn and improve :p wish you all the best in the build.

quick tip for making templates is taking a 4x8 sheet of cardboard and cutting it into 2" strips and making your border as well adding supports so it doesn't fall apart when you pull it down. hot glue is used to attach the pieces together and small dabs can be used to keep the template up while it's being made. I did granite/marble work for several years and its the fastest way I've found aside from a laser system and a heck of alot cheaper.

Before i started the video i was going to make a smart ASS comment saying" I wonder if he left the sticker on the bus like he does sometimes on the sheets of plywood. I started laughing when he said he is leaving the stickers and painting over them.

Loving this project so far, great production quality on the video as well. Definitely try to capture and properly dispose of coolant (or any other vehicle fluids) in the future though, it's horrible stuff to get out into the environment, and you can get some pretty hefty fines for it in most places as well.

Tip… calking…. Put a small amount of liquid dish soap in a cereal bowl (size) with water. Run your bead along the corner to be calked. With a soft gentle brush, brush the bead as well as both sides of the bead with the soapy water. Then dip your calking squeegee in the soapy water and draw it along the bead. The calking will fall right off the squeegee and not stick to the wall coated with soapy water, limiting the spreading out of the calking. It is a slick trick… NEXT…. dip your finger tips in the soapy water and light run them over the calked corner bead. It will smooth it out and give it a polished professional look. It will amaze you how well this works… do a few tests before doing the job to get the feel. I learned this trick shortly after moving to Germany back in 1998… I was shocked how easy and fantastic the results are…

I'll be honest the original bus wasn't that bad and a lot of those original materials could have been reused or sold to someone else building a similar project. I'm glad you showed what happens when you remove the lines because most people don't realize that cutting off the source does not remove the fluid already present in the lines. I think this is going to be a really good build and I will finish watching the video. This is by first the first RV transformation that I watched the whole video! You are a transformation Genius!!

I love this project! One thing I would suggest to look is a vinyl floor it would make it feel more like a home. Goonsquad did it on their army truck and it really bring an home feel. Blue paint it likely to peel at some point and vinyl plank is very durable and waterproof!
