Join me in this short 10 minute postpartum fitness video doing 5 effective diastasis recti healing moves to get rid of your "Mummy Tummy"!
I’ve been cleared by my doctor and pelvic floor physiotherapist to start working on healing my diastasis recti by doing about 10 minutes each day of inner core work (strengthening the transverse abdominis muscles). Note: this is more rehab and not consider “starting exercising”.
Last pregnancy I had a 4-finger gap and healed it less than 1 finger.
Here is the link with my full guide to how I healed my gap that I’m planning on following again now after this pregnancy.

Your videos helped me through 6 months of gestational diabetes while carrying my gorgeous wee boy: he was born healthy and I stayed diet-controlled throughout :) Really looking forward to more of your videos to help me get back in shape. @PregnancyandPostpartumTV
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Megan, You can see how you feel with these exercises and increase the time or reps if you don't feel it's enough. You can also lift up both toes (in the toe tap ones) as long as there is no coning. You could also include exercises like bridges and squats at this point (as long as your doctor says it's ok!) Just make sure that what your doing isn't causing coning and stay away from sit-ups, twists, planks until your diastasis is fully healed

Hello i have a 1 to 2, 2 around my belly i been doing the workouts for 2 days and my abs are a bit sore is that normal part of healing?. I have 6 kids youngest is a year and 4 years ago i had a C-section two kids after my twins. Im not able to see a specialist
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV 5 жыл бұрын
Christina Endicott Hi Christina! The exercises are “working out” the inner core muscles so muscle soreness after exercise may be normal especially if those muscles are not used to anything. However, any sharp or unusual type pain (that doesn’t feel like a muscle that has been worked out) is not normal. If it hurts while you are doing the exercise I would stop as well. Wow! You are a busy mama with 6 kids! And twins (I love twins!) Hope that answered your question. Are you able to see a family doctor if it’s more than just post-exercise muscle aches that should go away within a couple day of stopping the exercises...?

Hi! I am five months postpartum. I have a 1 finger separation from the top of my abdominal wall to about an inch below my belly button. I am trying to get this closed but I haven't seen any further progress. I also feel like I just get bloated looking all the time after eating or drinking. I go from normal to first trimester looking haha. Is this normal ? Will this go away as the separation increases and strength increases? Thanks
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV 4 жыл бұрын
leah molinari Hi Leah 👋 1-finger is actually normal after pregnancy and not considered diastasis recti. I find any bloating is more apparent too after pregnancy and DR. Is it only some foods or all foods/ drinks? I’m actually working on a video for bloating, but in the meantime, Desiree Neilson has some great articles on her website and a book called “Banish the Bloat”

leah molinari My gap has stopped closing at just under 2 fingers (Down from 4 fingers), but my bulging went away after my inner core muscles got strong (so even in my gap it feels like a trampoline and not just sinking). I was consistent at 10 min per day and avoiding the harmful movements that caused any bulging for a couple months.

Hi there, I am 7 month pp and I just measured my tummy I am one finger separated. Is it safe for me to start doing planks and cardio on treadmill ? Or should I continue to do these diastasis exercises to get 0 separation first before I start any other exercises?
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sara! Under 2 fingers is a actually normal postpartum. I would check to make sure you aren’t getting any “coning” but if you aren’t you can probably start including exercises like planks etc. A pelvic floor physio would be able to give you an individualized plan. Never hurts to be cautious if you aren’t sure about something though.

Unfinished Christianwoman I can’t say exactly. Are you able to get assessed by a pelvic floor physio. It should not take a year. Often it can be healed in 5-6 weeks, but may be a little longer. Also, it’s important to avoid any thing that cause coning of your abs or intra-abdominal pressure.

Hi,I have had 3.5 DR finger gap now after 4 months of doing excercises its only 1finger but I still have this mummy tummy like i'm 3 mth pragnant (I get back to my weight from before pragnancy so its not a fat).Am I doing sth wrong? What should I do to get rid of it? And how much I can close my gap? Can I get rid of it completly?
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Marta, Thanks so much for your message. That sounds super frustrating since you've been working so hard to close your gap from 3.5 to 1 finger (great job!). Anything under 2 fingers is normal after childbirth and shouldn't be causing "Mummy Tummy" anymore. Unfortunately, diastasis recti is only part or one of the causes for mummy tummy. Overall weight doesn't always reflect body fat. Pregnancy can cause more belly fat (abdominal adiposity or visceral fat) to be stored. It could also be some extra skin? Or do you ever think that you are bloated (do you have less of a tummy in the morning?). Here is an article that looked at the higher belly fat (visceral fat) after pregnancy www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2952441/ . Is your baby only 4 months old or did you just start the diastasis exercises 4 months ago. It took me about 9 months to not look 3 months pregnant after my second baby. I'll be posting more videos on this topic coming up in my "lose the baby weight series". Are you at your lowest weight you are comfortable with except for your belly or could you lose a little more? ie. were you happy with your weight pre-pregnancy?

Thank you for quick respond I have two boys one is 18mth and the other is 7mth. Both pragnancy ended up with c-sestion.My weight before pragnancy was 58kg and I am 157cm. Now I am 55kg so its 3kg less than before so I am quite slim. My belly is smaller in the morning and grow during the day in shape of letter v. There is no fat on the sides just its growing forword but i can suck it in and i couldnt do it one mth ago so its much stronger now. Is there any excercises that i could do now to make it better. And should I still doing DR excercises if its only 1 finger gap?
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV 6 жыл бұрын
Wow, you are a busy mama, Marta, with 2 so close in age!! The diastasis exercises can still help, but if your gap is closed you may be able to progress to harder (more traditional ab) exercises. You want to watch your abs as you are doing an exercise and make sure that there is NO coning or bulging. If not, then it's OK for you. You may be able to do planks, double leg lifts etc. You can use a handheld mirror to watch your stomach on your back to ensure no bulging in those positions. If it's getting stronger that is great! Progressing your exercises will hopefully help! If you are getting bloating by the end of the day, you could look into foods that may cause bloating for you (dairy, alcohol etc.), add probiotics or look into a FODMAP diet.

Once it's healed can you go back to normal workouts or do I have to avoid those forever?
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV
@PregnancyandPostpartumTV 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Abigail! That’s a great question :) Once your gap has healed to 2 fingers or less you should be able to start doing some “normal” moves with out “coning” if your stomach. It also depends on strength and depth though. If you aren’t sure if yours had healed a pelvic floor physio would be able to do an individual assessment. After babies I’m not sure I will ever want to do some of the crazy moves (ex. scissor jacks) But I have progressed to regular planks etc).

Hi harika k! Thanks so much for your comment. That’s great you were able to close your DR recti gap! I’m sorry you are frustrated that you didn’t get the tummy reduction you were hoping for yet. Why do you think you still have a tummy? Do you feel that it is because of your anterior pelvic tilt and you are looking for exercises to reduce your tilt? Or often new mothers will have extra visceral fat (abdominal fat) after a baby even if they lose weight all over. Or could it be from bloating? Or possible your uterus hasn’t “shrunk down” Have you tried a belly wrap? I used the one from Bellies Inc. and found it really helped. I’m not sure what you mean when you say “my upper body also bends” Let me joe and I will try to help as much as I can! Happy Weekend!

Uppa Shakya If your “mummy tummy” is from diastasis recti then yes, you can close the gap with these exercises years later (and avoiding traditional ab exercises that cause coning). I was just chatting with a mom who’s youngest is a teenager and she closed her gap! How big is your gap? Other things that also contribute to “Mummy Tummy” is extra weight around the midsection or bloating. Thanks for reaching out!
