In Quanzhou, the most popular style practiced is Wuzu Quan, or Five Ancestors. This style takes Taizu Quan as its basis, and adds elements of four other styles. In this two part episode, we learn about Wuzu Quan from Master Zhang Xiao Feng.
In this series I team up with Jesse Enkamp aka the Karate Nerd to travel to Fujian province, Southwest China. We are here to explore the arts of Southern Shaolin, particularly the arts of White Crane, Five Ancestors and Luohan. If you wanna check it out early, its already being uploaded to / monkeystealspeach or will be released on KZfaq around March/April next year

I was in Quanzhou in 2016 for the International Wuzuquan Federation conference. My favourite moment of the trip was when our group were training in the park beside the hotel early one morning. This elderly gentleman walking by stopped to watch. Bear in mind that in Quanzhou they rarely get Western visitors and they are tickled to see Westerners. But they are really delighted to see Westerners practising the local martial art. Anyway, this gentleman quietly watched and when I finished my form, he gave me a thumbs up and said: "Wuzuquan. Hăo!" I was so chuffed that I just bowed to him and he walked away. I wish I had taken a photo with him.

At first I thought the kata was a complex version of wansu but then, no, sanchin on steroids? The intensity, power and aggression is impressive. Definitely very similar to what I was taught in Okinawa - the c shaped stepping was drilled into us from day 1 the idea being to be able to explode forward at any moment and generate power from the ground up and out. Very cool indeed

Very good video, thanks for sharing. But at the begining, I don't think the statement is the correct understanding. Five ancestor fist is a composite style of fujian white crane, taizuquan, luohanquan, and monkey style. Not the other way around. all of those styles must have preceded wuzuquan to become it's five ancestors (fifth ancestor is Bodhidharma/Da Mo chi-gong but not a quan style in-and-of itself). Five ancestor fist is the child of those five styles. (Sorry in advance if I mistook what you said in the video.)

I am a Kyokushin karateka like you. At the dojo, there are times when we want to spar and focus on drills, and our teacher obliges, but he always makes sure to make us have at least one session dedicated to doing kata every few weeks. We even do bunkai for the movements in the katas, which is rare for most contemporary Kyokushin schools that teach kata for students so they can advance to higher belt ranks. He makes us do this because he says we must not forget the traditional aspect of Kyokushin Karate, because if we did, there would be no difference between us and kickboxers in terms of fighting. It is the katas that make karate, well, karate. I am not saying you should not focus on sparring and training drills - they are certainly what makes Kyokushin the art it is today - but you should not neglect kata completely. It will certainly be a refreshing change from all of the padwork, and who knows, maybe you might learn something new about the art we practise.

You had serious doubt about this type of martial arts. Instead of wanking around with fearsome named styles, just pick a Kung Fu man who sincerely train his body to be an armor of steel, hands of iron palm, reflexes faster than a cat they can beat any of your brute street fighters. Your disappointment is, these men don't strut around challenging everyone for fight because they don't have to. Real fighting for survival takes seconds not grappling for each other's arses on the ground.

Im sure master Zhang is strong and all. Although he looks kind of fat, i bet his core is powerful . But seems you doesn't have much leg flexibility and his hips are kind of stiff.
