interesting that in those days the writers didn't feel the need to save the countdown with just 1 second to go...in this scene there is a healthy 35 seconds left

“Those days”, you do realise that 1 second countdown cliche was already way established when this came out?

Originally, the Primords weren’t meant to be in this story however they were added in to give the story a “monster”. Similar to the cleaners in Paradise Towers, they were a last minute addition. I think both make their respective stories better.

The fire extinguisher was used for all the primords in this serial because they like the heat and can't stand cold. This was a very good episode and one that scared the hell out of me when I first saw it in the 70's as a very young kid.

Apparently part of the process of turning someone into a Primoid also converts them from videotape to film instantaneously.

Well spotted. Funnily enough, though, the change in picture quality is not as obvious in Inferno as it would have been if the BBC hadn't wiped the 625 line PAL master tapes of this story.

In 2003, this was voted Pertwee's best story by fans in the Outpost Gallifrey poll and was actually the only Pertwee story to get into the top 20.

@MALONEYCAMFIELD

@@hugodrax71 Yes. The top 20 was as follows: 1) Talons of Weng-Chiang 2) Caves of Androzani 3) Pyramids of Mars 4) Genesis of the Daleks 5) City of Death 6) Robots of Death 7) Deadly Assassin 8) Evil of the Daleks 9) Inferno 10) Web of Fear 11) Seeds of Doom 12) Ark in Space 13) Remembrance of the Daleks 14) Curse of Fenric 15) Power of the Daleks 16) Tomb of the Cybermen 17) War Games 18) Fury from the Deep 19) Earthshock 20) Daleks' Masterplan ..... The second highest placing for poor old Pertwee was Spearhead from Space at number 27.

@@MALONEYCAMFIELD Thanks for posting that top 20. Some great stories in there and I'm not surprised Tom Baker's brilliant 1975-76 period is heavily represented. Pyramids of Mars is my own personal no.1. Slightly strange to see so many 'wiped' stories in there. From Pertwee's era I'd have found room for Spearhead from Space, The Daemons and Terror of the Autons. Possibly The Mind of Evil as well.

@@hugodrax71 "Slightly strange to see so many 'wiped' stories in there." I thought that too. Maybe it was a bit of nostalgia for episodes that can't be seen anymore, though of course the audios have existed for quite a long time. And of course, most of Web of Fear has now turned up since that poll. On the Pertwee point, I wonder if it's because the Pertwee era is so defined by the UNIT setup, which probably divides fans somewhat. A substantial number of fans love UNIT, the Brigadier and Benton etc. but maybe that poll demonstrates that a lot of fans prefer stories without UNIT. You mention the early Tom Baker period under Hinchcliffe and Holmes, which is for good reason regarded by many as the peak of the classic series, and of course one of the first things Hinchcliffe and Holmes did was phase UNIT out - and that didn't seem to harm the show's popularity.

That was the problem. The early Pertwee era was quite scary but they got into trouble with Terror of the Autons in particular and had to pull back from being that scary again. Phil Collinson (a producer of the 2005 series of Doctor Who) admitted in an interview that they would never make the 21st century Doctor Who as scary as that.

Yes...but if you think there's something more to the Primords directing them, his heading out makes sense. It needed him to kill, convert, or drive off the rest of the staff so that the drill could reach Penetration Zero and let it loose.
