Gave my Dad his first ride in Mooney N205J. ILS approach, touch and go, followed by pattern landing.

What camera setup did you use to film this? I would like to do something similar.

It’s a GoPro using a baseball hat clip mount.

Just curious as I have no idea, is it not bad to pull on the prop? You had the bar to pull with?
@RMAG
@RMAG 6 жыл бұрын
I’m pulling on the tow bar more. There is debate on it. You can google it to read about it. Some say don’t do it. Some say the entire weight of the aircraft is pulled by the prop in flight which is more force than I can exert on it on the ground. When I did it I always used the inmost part at the hub and I tried to exert more pulling force on the tow bar. There are some props you definitely can’t do this for like composite props. I now use a motorized bar.

What were you doing there at 4:07 with the mixture? Looked like you were pulling it full lean several times? Or was that the throttle?
@RMAG
@RMAG 6 жыл бұрын
It’s not mixture or throttle. It’s the prop lever. The Mooney has a variable pitch prop. The prop lever controls the pitch of the prop to set a fixed engine rpm. Pulling the lever 3 times during run up flows oil into the prop hub.

Ok, crazy question. I know this flight is using a 'headlamp' style GoPro and is not through sound dampening, but- the whole plane seems like its been painted & avionics- BUT, not engine, mount & dampeners yet? It seems like a freshly painted, freshly Garmin 5000'd plane (pre 5000 Txi)- WITHOUT the rebuild yet? On the West & East cross country, even starts are incredibly smooth, idle is like 'buttah', run up the same and in flight it sounds like a Swiss watch. This flight, I hear occasional resonant vibrations, something rattling once in a while, plane vibrations through RPM shifts- like a 32 year old Mooney or sumthin? Is this 2017 flight PRIOR to engine, mount, propeller & isolation damper upgrades? No hate, promise!- I LOVE this plane, seriously. Just wondering...

Same plane... same engine and prop, maybe prior to a dynamic prop balance. On my other videos I reduce the volume of the engine as well so it doesn’t overpower the dialogue. You are also hearing wind noise on the run up as I have the window open.

@@RMAG OK. I know that your videos 'improved' by using cockpit voices through sound reduction on the 'sea to sea' trip. Also, the camera's were hard mounted (well, compared to strapped to you head at least). I'm sure that you are sick of hearing how gorgeous, wonderful & beautiful your M201J SE is, so, I'll refrain from babbling your ear off. Love your Registration number- friggin' awesome and I can't imagine that another owner wouldn't get it right away! P.S. Great trip recording, and, you & your dad traveled well together (not always that easy with father/son engagements!)

Your Mooney looks great! Did you do the upgrades yourself?

Very nicely upgraded. I didn't mean did you do the work yourself, but rather did you purchase it in a vintage state and have all the upgrades done...or did you buy it like it is? I would love to see what it looked like previously, and maybe what it cost to do some of the cosmetic upgrades. I have an M20C with great avionics, but it's dated cosmetically.

Wow! That's really cool. I would love to do that to my plane, but by the time I was done I probably could have bought an Ovation 3 haha! I don't have a way to justify it like you do.

Rmag. Hi there. Is there anyway that I can chat with you off line??? I'm a Mooney M20K owner with an avionics issue and I was wondering if I could get some assistance from a Garmin PRO.

I was trying to learn the technical differences between the M201J and the 205 online and couldn't find anything really. What are they? And what year is this one? Sweet plane!

Mooney N205J is a 1987 M20J model “205 Special Edition (SE)”. It differed from other M20J “201’s” at the time in that it incorporated a few changes: 1. Fully enclosed gear doors 2. Rounded window lines 3. 28 volt electrical system 4. Electric cowl flaps with infinite adjustment 5. Upturned wingtips with forward facing recognition lights and aft facing position lights 6. Gear extension speed increased from 132 to 140 knots The 205 SE came right as the general aviation market was in decline, so only seventy-seven 205 SE’s were built spanning two years. Did you not do a GUMPS check? your Prop wasn't adjusted to max RPM... 500ft check should inlcude gear down and prop max RPM, no?
@RMAG
@RMAG 6 жыл бұрын
Huh? If I didn’t do a GUMP check I would have landed gear up. See 6:12 and 9:30.

My very experienced instructor would not have signed me off if I didn't go max RPM on the prop on short final, what if you had to do a go-around? Oh well, just a matter of opinion I suppose...
@RMAG
@RMAG 6 жыл бұрын
It is not a matter of opinion. Max RPM needs to be set for landing. My Prop is set to max RPM when I configure the plane for landing when I enter the pattern. Like I commented above, watch the video at 6:12 and again at 9:30. This is the initial GUMP configuration. For a better understanding, see my video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9R4pdSC1tOvf4U.html and jump to 31:50, it has cockpit audio and I walk through the GUMP procedures. I want to preconfigure the plane for landing (including max RPM) well prior to short final for two primary reasons: 1.) Short final 100% focus needs to be on landing the plane, not messing with landing configurations. 2.) I rather make a max RPM setting when I have pattern altitude in case it causes any problem. I don’t want surprises on short final. In the twin turbine world, for certain aircraft, there are procedures to go max RPM 10 miles out from landing.
