This is probably what will push me over the edge to subscribe to StarLink. My primary use case is travel/car camping in a Tesla Model Y. I'd been debating Starlink for a while and the smaller size and integrated router is clutch.

Thanks for the great info. My interest in SL performance is on the low power side so I’m happy to sacrifice Wi-Fi range for low power consumption. Now I just hope the subscription plan is also low cost.

If the mini has an Enet port, run a Cat5/6 wire from the dish to the trailer and plug into your own WiFi router, so the distance limitation of the built-in WiFi is no longer an issue.
@claytonrjohnson
@claytonrjohnson Ай бұрын
And then put both the power cable and the Enet cable in a "tube" so you only have one cable to run from the RV to the dish. Doesn't get any easier than that.

Perhaps they can add low powered Mesh WiFi networking system, a bit like battery/Type-C powered Google WiFi points you can expand your WiFi mesh from the Mini for.. Or you could Ethernet to any WiFi6, WiFi7 router/mesh system..

A minor correction... WiFi 6 isn't "more powerful" than WiFi 5. The same FCC power limits apply. WiFi 6 has what's called "beam forming", which can aim that power in a general direction. As for speed, WiFi 5 is already WAY faster than the Starlink connection. Heck, even the old 802.11n 2.4GHz-only link is faster. The only way I can see anyone being able to tell the difference between WiFi5 and 6 is if they have 100+ WiFi devices (smart home sensors?) all trying to use one ccess point at the same time. And if you're worried about not being able to get the signal inside your RV, then use wired Ethernet to a WiFi 6 access point inside the RV...

I am surprised they didn't just integrate a 2 hour battery to make the unit completely self-contained. At 25W power consumption it would have added a little bit of weight but also make it a truly portable solution for recreation and emergency use.

not really. I have a 5 AH 12V battery right here. (that's 60 Watt-hours, so just over 2 ours at 25 watts, but you really can't use 100%. it weighs another 3 pounds, but it's a lead-based gel-cell.. But still, even a lithium battery is going to be a significant weight increase. If I have to place it on top of a camper or a boat, or at a camp-site, do I really want a big battery built in? Not me.

Hopefully is ip68. Because this kinda looks tailor made for campervan/RVs. 12v, 15m cable…. Sounds perfect. Hopefully it doesn’t have any more dropouts than the regular antenna, and same speed as well. Would plug my own router and boom! Perfection

I guess Download speed will be fine, perhaps 50-60% of the regular v3/v4 Dish, but I guess also Upload speed will be quite a bit slower compared to a full sized dish. Anyone know what speeds one can expect? I like Type-C PD charge is supported. I guess it might've been cool if the Mini included 4-8hr battery life, to function totally independently wirelessly, where the Type-C PD 100W power bank just extends the battery life for it.. How fast will it use 20'000mAh 100W power bank while running?

@StarlinkHardware
@StarlinkHardware Ай бұрын
Currently what you would have to do is have two subscriptions, one for each dish. Your home dish would be on Residential, and you keep paying that monthly. Your Mini dish would be on a Roam subscription so you can travel with it. With Roam, you can pay on a monthly basis, pausing the service when you aren't traveling. There is no way right now to have two dishes on the same plan to rotate between the two.
@ClayBellBrews
@ClayBellBrews Ай бұрын
So wifi 6 is technically more powerful because it can use the same power per antenna, but more antennas. That said, this dish has lower bandwidth (to the satelites) and likely wouldn’t benefit from the faster wifi. That said, it should work with PoE and the mesh 3 box should work with it, abet as an add-on. The other limitation is that the longest cable is 15m/48ft. Kinda short for camping. I’d love to know if the standard’s cables would work with it.

I find it odd there is no mention of 802.3bt/POE++ on the ethernet. If you use your own router, you then have to run ethernet and power to the dish. I think some users have used their own router with POE to power the dish on previous versions. This looks good for my camper trailer. As it is all metal, getting wifi from outside may be a problem. The low power and DC supply makes it much easier to use.
@StarlinkHardware
@StarlinkHardware Ай бұрын
I’m thinking the same. I have a blog post coming out tomorrow morning about the Mini accessories that are going to be available. What they are doing with the Mini and the accessories makes no sense unless the Ethernet port can power the dish from the Gen 3 router.

You can only get the mini is you have Starlink already and it's 30 bucks more. Only 50gb data then pay for more... And the mini kit will cost 599 bucks. Very expensive and not happy with the 50gb. If it has to be an add-on to your current subscription then you should be able to have your current data allowance.

I was interested until I found out the standalone subscription costs, not to mention that the hardware costs more than standard. I'll keep the current setup at an affordable $150 a month which I pause 6 months out of the year. I would never have starlink at home since it's so much slower and more expensive than the fiber in our neighborhood so the add-on price is irrelevant.

I want to see a cheaper pay by the GB plan for these lower speed dishes. So you only pay for when you actually use it during camping trips.
