I did almost the exact same thing for years. I would get ready for work and just before I left, I would have my bow strung and ready in the shop. I would take that cold shot then leave for work. I left the arrow in the target all day so that I could also see it when I got home! Make that first shot count!
@tradbowpodcast

It sure does make you focus more on that cold shot.

Work midnights. Come home every day. Grab bow in garage. Then shoot 1 arrow at 20. Live with it. The evening I shoot 25 shots. Yes this is good stuff.

fantastic system. Thats what Chuck does. He shoots a cold shot in the morning before work and has to live all day with the results and the penalties he puts on himself for a bad shot. then in the evening he does regular practice sessions.

I try to tell myself, the only shot of the day, is the first shot of the day. Amazing how one can make thousands of shots with lots of experience, but a moment's distraction can make the shot sequence totally fall apart. Gearing up is definitely a great way to put it all together to duplicate the hunt. I bought a mosquito mesh camo head net, not thinking much about it. I was out in the woods with my net on, and decided to take a couple practice draws and found that the stitching and wire around the nose piece was right where my anchor point landed. Another issue was a cold weather jacket with a stiff hood on it. When drawing the bow one of my eyes was looking directly into the inside of the hood. The same jacket had baggy sleeves and when canting the bow, the sleeve dropped directly into the bow string path. Items sticking out of chest pockets can also catch on the string. Great info as always. Thanks for sharing. Side note, if the deer target ducked the arrow, you were still in the game.

all very excellent points. and that shot i was trying to recreate was on a pig and they dont drop like deer do. so I would of been a wounded pig. On a deer your right it might of dropped right into it and I would not of know any better and thought I made a perfect shot on it.

I never shoot at the same distance two times in a row. I like to move forward or backward, but of course you have to have your own space to do this. But, the first shot from wherever you’re standing is the most important, And you can soon figure out what your effective range and furthest away you can shoot at an animal by doing this. Good stuff as usual.

People have to understand, that when they’re shooting good at the range, it’s because they’ve been target practicing, and are already warmed up. But when you take that shot at that animal, your not. Your clothing is more bulky, your body is cold, and your muscles are stiff. And that deer is unpredictable. He’s not going to be standing at that exact range yardage like your target normally would be. It’s a totally different ball game. Great video, and good advice! Thanks for sharing. 👍😎👍

Yep, this is why instinctive shooting needs to be exactly that. My first 5 shots are truly instinctive. Beautiful harmony between my brain, my eyes, and my fingers. I can hit dead center without thinking about anything. My mind is clear, and that's all that matters. Everything after that just turns into practice. Target panic sets in, practice panic sets in, you start thinking about back tension, form, am I hitting my anchor, and of course every KZfaq video out there trying to teach you how to instinctively shoot. Paralysis by analysis unfortunately. You owe it to yourself to trust yourself...only then does it truly become Instinctive Shooting.

Great points about the instinctive aspect. But even for the guys that aim this method really drives home the importance of really making that first shot count.

This is a great way to determine your actual effective range. Slowly increase the range day after day until you find the distance you can't be consistent. Add that stress to the practice!

Yup. Cold bore shot tells you exactly what you need to know from a hunting perspective. If your sights are off or you have inconsistent form the cold bore shot will expose it.
