This is crazy, I shoot almost exactly like you do. It is how I started and it just always felt natural to me. I started shooting probably around 2016ish and took about a 3 year break after being frustrated/overwhelmed by all the shooting "techniques" out there because I thought I was shooting the wrong way compared to everyone else. Tried 3 under, standing straight, working on form/back tension, release and everything else and just got so overwhelmed it was not fun and I quit. I started shooting again last year and am sticking with the way I started, split finger, leant over, heavily canted bow(mainly because I wear glasses and the angle helps avoid string contact with them), look where you want to hit. Don't care because it works for me and I am having fun lol. So glad I found your channel, love your videos man! 👍

In a few more days on October 1, I will start my 53rd year shooting the SAME traditional bow, a Bear Kodiak Magnum. I can't say Fred Bear taught me personally but Fred was at the top of his form in the 60's so I and all my bow hunting buddies studied everything he did and committed it to memory. We did our best to mimic Fred Bear's every move. I highly recommend watching film of all the great traditional archers of that day and watch how they aim and shoot. You will see a lot of canting of the bows, crouching, push-pull draw techniques, etc. For a bow hunter, a slight crouch and bend over at the waist is an essential component of good form, especially when shooting from an elevated stand. It helps get the angle of your line of sight and the arrow lined up on the target faster and it also reduces the line of sight angle from what it would be if you shot standing full upright. The smaller the angle of the line of sight relative to the target, the more of a "straight line" you have between your vision, the arrow, and the point you want to hit on the target. Push-pull drawing of the bow should become an instinctive part of every traditional archer's technique. My Kodiak Magnum is a very short 52" length bow with a 50 pound pull. It takes a lot of muscle force to draw and hold my bow. But I am still doing it with ease at 67 years old and with congestive heart failure! Push-pull draw is part of the secret. Pushing with my left arm while pulling back with my right hand allows two sets of muscles to divide the work load and it also gets the bow to full draw faster. Time needed to draw and shoot can be critical for some shots. Last, but not least, is canting the bow. I offer your viewers an invitation to watch a short practice session shooting video on my channel. Because I cant my bow about as heavily as you do, I absolutely DO NOT wear any arm guard protection. I don't need it. The canting of the bow, along with proper shooting form, keeps my arm completely away from the string. In my practice video you will see me shooting my bow in a long sleeve shirt with the sleeves rolled up loosely. I don't even catch the loose sleeve in my bow! I think I quit wearing an arm guard about 30 or more years ago. That gives me more freedom of movement and it also instills complete confidence in knowing I am not going to get string slapped. The more upright you stand and hold a bow when shooting, the more likely you are to get string slapped and to need an arm guard. Excellent info in your video! I hope every new traditional archer watches it. Thanks for sharing.

The majority of the trad bow shooters I know shoot that way. If one of my students wants to shoot Olympic Recurve I teach them to shoot with full back tension with a vertical bow, and the same for compound shooters with sights. For recurves and longbows with no sights it's a crouch and cant approach. People never believe me when I tell them that I rarely shoot past 20 yards at deer. The doe I got this morning was 10 yards out. I'm still using training wheels, but I really wish I had taken the recurve this morning.

@@tradbowpodcast my very first deer was shot with a recurve 42 years ago. Back then, we built treestands out of whatever lumber we had. I ended up having to sit on the two 2x4s that formed the platform. The shot happened at 5 to possibly 7 paces, and necessitated an extreme cant and much abbreviated draw. Even at probably 2/3rds draw with a light bow (#45), that deer was mine. It's refreshing to here someone sharing practical knowledge that works. Great videos, Jason!

When I am using a Flatbow Longbow I tend to cant it more at a 35 to 45 degree angle due to my size just in the straight stand and same for when using recurves in odd stances. I also know I have to use the smaller flatbows that are 60-64 inches as opposed to the true sizes of 64 inches plus or better yet actual flatbows that are true longbows at 66 inches to often as long as 72 inches.

You mentioned the "conventional" "mainstream" way to shoot upright, but there are lots of very successful styles of archery throughout history, styles honed for survival. You have clearly honed your style to suit your needs. I have found this breakdown of the "asiatic" draw to be very informative as well as its overview of various cultures' archery styles: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9x3dLxzss7Ge40.html I guess my point is, your style isn't "bad", nor is it entirely unique. Arguably most archery cultures have a lean in their draw. I see many elements of your style in various archery styles that have been described to me, and I am so excited to see someone hone their own style and adding to whole archery culture.

This is how Ive always shot my bow. I am very acurate and have killed large game, small came and even birds. Lets face it Ishi shot his bow holding it horizontal to the ground. He was very acurate with it and killed game. Ive always believed if its comfortable for you then you'll stick with it. Good info in your video thanks for sharing.

That's BS Their is no wrong or right not really everyone has got to find what works for them and stick with it! I see nothing wrong with your style of shooting it works for you, I shoot three under I have all my life and I'm 61 it just feels normal to me, I tried spit but don't shoot that way well, I don't aim the arrow per say but point the arrow I touch the back corner of my mouth with my index finger but my true anchor is I hook my first knuckle into the back of my jawbone the hallow spot below the ear and I have shot this way since I was a kid! I f isn't broke don't fix it!

Thank you for your thoughts. Side note. 25 years when I shot target style I had developed target panic and short draw syndrome. Took me 2 years to beat it. Guess how I beat it? Exactly what you see here. And also guess what? 23 years since my last bout of targrt panic. You don't have to agree with me and my ahooting style. Many don't! Thats OK. Shoot how ever works for you. This works for me, better than perfectly.
@uncleremus5046
@uncleremus5046 3 жыл бұрын
You beat panic on the blank bale by learning a sequence ingraining every step. Then you go thru a bridge program. Forget the aim & staying on the back end of the shot is key. Focusing on execution not results is the key. Your fooling yourself shooting like this with a touch & go anchor. It’s garbage put the work in & build your shot up one step @ a time. Rick McKinney, Len Cardinale, Rod Jenkins, Terry Wunderle will help you. Learn a sequence & execute with back tension.
