I'm a recent archer, but found myself deeply involved in this sport. Watched about 100 videos during last 3 months and have to say that this is one of the best! As a matter of fact I didn't find other video with focus on such a peculiar but very basic details. Now my shots are way stronger and consistent. Thank you Jeff!

There’s been more that one day that I’ve literally looked down at my bow during practice and asked it “who’s in control here you or me?” Then I remember to take control and walk through my shot process and I start hitting where I’m looking again. Verry nice video Jeff thanks! In the book of Uncle Howard 🙂his nephew wrote that he always leaned in to his shot while keeping a good form and that works for me also. Stay healty and happy trails, kind regards from the Belgian Ardennes, Yves.

Great video Jeff, I totally agree! You have to make the shot intentional, and your body mechanics / form do matter in instinctive shooting, but once they are set, you just focus on that spot and let it rip! Ive don't the same thing, dropped some draw weight and you can tell a difference after you shoot it for a while, there is no getting around it we all probably need to bring less testosterone to the game and more consistency.

Jeff, thanks for this video. Really good advice and coaching. Just watching you in this video showed me a couple of things that I have not been paying enough attention to. You know, back in 1971 I met a guy in California by the name of Butch Rockford. He was a member of the old P.A.A. I was shooting instinctive back then (I should say I thought I was) and was doing pretty good. Butch convinced me to shoot freestyle. So I bought a 70 inch Wing takedown bow, a Jerry Killian sight, and another famous shooter from down there, Bill Dahl, made me my ledge releae, and Butch kind of took me under his wing and helped me become a really good freestyle shooter. One thing Butch said, and he said it all time, was: "If you can't learn to shoot back tension, you will never be a good shooter." I have, over the years since then, found that to be true regardless of the type of shooting you are doing. Freestyle compound, freestyle recurve or longbow, barebow, longbow, it doesn't matter. I'm really glad to see that you emphasize that here too. Thanks again for the video on this subject Jeff, we ALL appreciate it! Jim Scott

Nice shooting and nice advice. I’ve shot shot and shot since I was 7 years old and I’ll be 60 this year. Shot heavy bows for my stature for years. The doctor says I desperately need a shoulder replacement. This year after not shooting for a few I’m going to be shooting bows in that 40 to 45 lbs range . I constantly shot 55-60 lbs traditional and 60-80 lbs compounds for up to thousands of shots a day . I just love shooting , especially instinctively shooting .

Begun shooting both eyes open pure instinctive, have been very accurate with said technique standing, kneeling, shooting down level and up, then somewhere along the line my consistency evaporated like magic......now I always close left eye and use bow cutaway as a reference point to target.....and somehow prefer it. Got my first animals too at twenty metres first hunt with one eye closed. Biggest issue for me is anchor point and not letting my release fingers strike my face and affect the shot.

Hello, I use a Centre Point Aspen 45lb bow with a 30" draw three under 500 spine with 150 grading tips. I've been practicing my instinctive. I close my eyes stage with arrow and bow at waist as I raise My bow I look at my target and where I want to hit. By time I come to full draw I know where I'm going to hit my target. I only hold for half to full second before release and usually hit within 1/2 " of my aim point. That's my Technic to become better shot. I shoot about 50-100 shots 3-4 days week. I like to close my eyes take a few deep breaths and listen before even raising my bow.

Probally abit heavy draw to start with...took many good points on shooting from various sources...was grouping at ten yards decent (most times)...then it started falling apart...I think I have been collapsing! Maybe I could use a 25# bow to work on better form and for small game anyhow. Thanks, I've reevaluate how I had my frame!

You stretch out a straight line from draw hand to bow hand and your body figures out the rest when you have good technique and just focus on the target, want to hit that target... As long as the arrow flies straight, no deflecting (hence good technique), humans have built in instincts for archery so just like when throwing a ball to the catcher, you focus on the catcher's mitt and your throw will hit right there...

I definitelly suffer from time to time with collapsing, great video on what to work on for improving, need to keep that posture in check... would also buy a "drill city archery shirt" just saying. On a side note I've been shooting a 51 pound of a couple years, I've been considering dropping to my 44 pound bow lately, just a pleasure to shoot, and I think if I shot with it for a week I would be a better shooter...Take care.
@Bowstringdotcom
@Bowstringdotcom 2 жыл бұрын
I found that for me dropping from 55# to 47/48# gained almost two inches of draw length (obviously was not pulling the heavier weight comfortably) and I gained some serious consistency. I changed my anchor point as well to accommodate the softer drawing bow- hence the added draw length. Im convinced that shooting 5-10 pounds less, could help a lot of people, and truth be told, they may find they gain enough draw length in the process to make up for half of the lost velocity from a lighter bow. And at that point if you have lost 5, 7, or 10FPS but gained some repeatable accuracy it was an upgrade. 10 FPS is 6.8 MPH, meaningless. Outside of that, I also found that going back up to the heavier bow, my form is now muscle memory and I can get that heavier bow drawn farther back, still can't shoot it as comfortably though.
@TheHYENA87
@TheHYENA87 2 жыл бұрын
@@Bowstringdotcom interesting... I've stayed with my 51 because I found I had a good 15 ish shots in me before tiring, seemed to be a good amount to hunt with, my first shots are always better slightly heavier draw....I get out for elk and bear also so mentally I would need more confidence in the mid 40s. Which I'm sure I would get as I killed more with it, I moved up in weight as I progressed with my shooting like alot do... But I wonder now where I would be if I just stayed in the mid 40s with pull weight.
@GeezerDust
@GeezerDust 2 жыл бұрын
@@Bowstringdotcom Same here. I found that shooting different bow weights will change my draw 1-2 inches. I'm still experimenting to find the best combination. Also, like you said, as I gain muscle strength / memory, I am able to go back up in draw weight.

Oh I’ll most likely hunt with it but I do usually hunt with around 47-50 pounds just because I love massive foc hunting arrows that hit like a cannon ball with around 300gr up front lol but a lower poundage bow with a 600 and 200gr up front is very deadly with a two blade as well just have to make a decent shot with either one or it’s not going to make any difference but I do like to up my pounds in the stand for sure 👍🏻

In the same way that you say to yourself "make a strong shot", I like to say to myself "strong shots are easy". If I come to full draw in such a way that my back tension is holding everything with minimal effort and strain, then making a strong shot just requires easily adding a little bit of pressure in the direction of the bullseye through the release.

@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998 Жыл бұрын
It greatly depends on the length of your arrow, with my testing of exact setups like yours, 29” was the maximum length to tune with 225gr anything longer needed 200gr or going up to a 500 spine but it also is very dependent on how far you’re actually drawing the bow and what the exact weight is at that draw, in other words if you’re not drawing past 28” or 40# 225gr will be fine!

I’d start closer and then move around but don’t try past 10-12 yards to start with then once you’ve nailed down a process that’s working you can back up a little as well as move around just to test it out and see if you loose focus or change anything in that process.

I have a weird question maybe you can answer, I can’t shoot lighter weight bows 45lb and under because it really hurts my bow arm elbow. I can shoot 50lbs and my absolute favorite is my 57lb bow, but I also have 65lb bows and no trouble at all with my elbow. This is driving me crazy because I can’t answer at all for this. At first I thought maybe it’s the grips on the bows but they all are different the only consistent thing is lower the weight the more my elbow hurts. I realize the answer is “ don’t shoot those bows “ but it’s really strange. To add a side note when I was young 6 and 12 I broke all the bones in the lower bow arm from elbow down twice !! Bucking horses go figure , rode bulls later in life never broke a bone get on horse! Anyway when the quack doctor set the bones the second time instead of bone ends together he set with one on top of the other at an angle so I have a crooked arm to boot. What I think is happening is that with the right pressure things kind of align and without it my elbow tendons and ligaments get stressed?
