Never in a million years did I think the roof of my car would come off but it did. If you own a classic car the first I recommend doing is what we had to do: ripp your roof off. I know this probably sounds crazy, complicated and unnecessary but it's none of the above. The fact is these old roofs were not rust proofed, moisture collects and your car essentially rusts away from the inside out. On top of this a lot of old cars had bad window seals and water will get in and ruin your day. If you are restoring your car you really don't want to do stuff twice so removing everything and fixing all the hidden rust will ensure your car lasts forever. At the same time this job really isn't that difficult it's just time consuming. I was extremely intimated of doing this but after completing this job I can tell you this was the best thing I could have done. Our 1972 Chevy Nova had bad leaks everything and that along with all the mouse damage forced us to remove our roof skin. What we founds was both shocking but fixable. In this video we explore how to remove the roof skin, treat all the trust, repair the inner structure and put a new roof on. Best part is I have never done this before so if I can do it anyone can!

At the end of the day you just gotta ask yourself who are you restoring the car for? Yeah not much money to be made but rather more lost. But if you are building it for yourself I'll tell ya it's always worth it. If you check out some of the between the wheels videos on this channels that's what the stories are about. People busting their butts making theirs dreams come true. We are all in this together my friend 😊 thanks for commenting !

Awesome man. If you can do full quarters first I highly recommend that then drop the roof on. The sail panels are not the best way to go but I never expected to do full quarters when I did this. Good luck! Quarter vid just came out it all works together

If you're going to be stupid you got to be tough....just kidding man. I have been in your shoes getting metal cut out of my eye a handful of times. Honestly its probably the most valuable piece of advice you gave to a new builder in the entire video. You 100% need something that will seal around your entire eye and like you said extend it to the entire face. That is also the case even if you are sandblasting, ask me how I learned that. Good job on the rood install and cool Jess got to try welding also.

Stupid is as stupid does... Isn't that from a famous movie? Lots of stupid mistakes here. Yeah that was a painful lesson.. was back in October and the eye is not back to 100%. Did a lot of stuff I'd do differently now after watching this! No self dimming helmet was the biggest error ! Thanks for watching man

Nice job on the roof thingy!, Jess working on the car is also a plus, as for the eye, I had metal in both of mine doc had to use a grinder thing to get access to mine, kinda buff and shine but I did save them both! I too am getting a mig welder like yours as I seen them at work and it's a no brainer for me getting one asap. I guess you learn as you go, but at least no eye was lost! Getting back to work on mine next week can't wait. Good luck and keep those videos coming!

That mig is awesome. With the 10lb spool it works awesome. I got it dialed in and it dawesone even without the gas. Heck a buddy of mine bought it too and he used the gas then went to flux core and had a better result. So it's a great unit fun to use. Good luck get er done

WOW! WOW! WOW! ......That was an awesome video...certainly a lot of information. Great job all around a lot of metal work and also hilarious to watch Jessica`s first run at welding...awesome. Let`s not forget that appearance of that Nasty Nova.....Always great to see that car. And you driving it...something you will never forget. Thanks for the awesome comment Ross I'm glad you liked the video. This was the first video where I think we got the balance of information, quality, and story balance just right. And moving forward all the rest of the episodes are like this so I'm glad its watchable. Yeah tons of info on this one I can't tell you how much research went into this video it was insane.... But think it's helpful for others so we'll worth the effort. Also the first episode I start to get comfortable on camera I'm still a little stiff. Takes a while to get used to. I try to get Jess in there when I can she's always funny but also inspiring for others. Glad the episode is decent. Cheers man

Was wondering you’ve ever tried fluid film, instead of the Eastwood frame coating. I’ve heard very good things about fluid film.

@@dannyalves1656 can't say I have as I am very new to this. That said I have to say the Eastwood is really good. Been using it for the rockers and inner structure and man does it stick well. I even made a mess on the floors in some areas and it's really tough to remove. So in my mind if it's that hard to remove from an area that sees little action from the elements and sun I think it'll last.

Take a piece of napkin or toilet paper, and place it in front of the 3M filter: Trim it neatly, and you will not even see it. It will not only save (and extend) the life of the filter, but obviously save you some money. I have done it on my own, (cannot remember where I hear or seen it) but it really works. And you do not "feel" it, breathing through it. Try it - maybe it will also work for you.

Looks like you made the right call.Addressing more of the rust. I did a body repair. And it only lasted a couple year. Before I started seeing rust bleeding through. partially my fault thoug. Getting stuff stuck in your eyes no joke, you can't have a piece of metal sticking in your body for only so long. It's poisonous. Glasses are crap I'd always use face shields. The stuff you're working on has so many angles.It doesn't matter how you use a grinder You'll have something bouncing off one of the angles of the body. Direction of uses is more important. Keep your head back. Having a ball cap around is nice keeping the junk out of your hair. I had To extract some metal from my buddy's eye. When doing it yourself it's important To have some sort of mirror and good lighting. Makeup mirrors are really nice. I'm really bad about using safety equipment. Typically, I'm doing the things that I've mentioned. And when it comes to smoke you need to learn to breathe shallow. And keep your head back. Newer welders tend to really get up close to their welds and they tend to Burn up there welding shields and suck up a whole lot of the smoke too. It's just a habit to try to learn. You're obviously feeling a lot of pain at this point. That sucks. I got a piece of wood stuck in my eye It's still there. Good thing that it doesn't have the effects like metal. Watching your wife Weld was quite relatable for me And funny.i ts better more gratifying skill than grinding. Less scary once you understand what to anticipate. Just don't catch yourself on fire with those flannel shirts. A heavy cotton is better. There's RF Products you can look into. There's a cubitron product. That's very aggressive for grinding I see you're using something similar. the flap disks are nice. I did use a acid for all our rusty sockets and tools. It's called miradic acid.It's veffective and Is way faster than vinegar. It only takes twelve hours To come out clean. Fairly cheap.. Just don't breathe it. Let my kids watch ya yesterday. I think they're finding it interesting.

Hey Caleb awesome comment as always. Yeah for rust repairs If your don't neutralize it it'll come back even if it looks gone. That's why I use the ospho everywhere because it won't rust under the primer. And along with ospho using a single stage primer is useless it will rust again so it has to be epoxy it's the only way to stop the mosisture transfer. Then once that's on it's okay to use a single stage paimt that's why the Eastwood chassis black is good. But I still only use single stage paints in areas where they are not exposed to the elements. Any place there is lots of water or Sun it needs to be two stage mixed paint with a hardener. There is a guy here in town who appears in the charger video hiscars he restored 30 years ago still look brand new. In terms of welding yeah big progress but learned the hard way. I now use a dimming mask and under have glasses and a mask. Along with this I also use a fan so the fumes don't go in my system. I now never use a grunder without a full mask it's just not worth it. Pain in the ass the remove all the time but no injuries. You are right grinders are dangerous so glasses are always a risk. Jess had fun with the car so far. Cool you showed your kids the video I canbimagine I'm pretty boring for kids but still cool you showed them.

Bud I can tell you from experience I had to have remove metal from my eye at the hospital with a Dremel that 250.00 eye protection is the best purchase you can make cover your eyes people

Jesus that sounds terrifying. Can't say I needed that but the giant needle was enough to make me think twice. I wear the full mask for everything and honestly no issues since. This was filmed in October so great success witht he full mask. Also wearing a small mask while welding helps a lot too don't get sick anymore.

Not sure how or why you remember me. These are the last few years before the government decided we were just too wild for high horsepower cars and trucks.... pre emissions times. I don't think they knew we would get the LS engines that were computer maintained for maximum power available. I came home from vietnam, wild and krazy nuts. Marriage was not the right choice for me as she and I after just a few years argued and it led to a divorce I never wanted. We started in the shop we had and in doing so, many times got sidetracked.... more clothes off than on. Those were my best times of memories of the lady I still love to this day. I was the problem, not her and she just never forgave me. No working it out so I went to alaska and she went to N. Carolina. This car like so many made then were nice enough but knowledge of how to keep from rusting away or their ideas of selling more cars led to their not lasting long. At your age now, miles ahead of me at that age meaning good tools, maybe not the most expensive but good. I made a choice later to have the very best tools on the market, spent over a hundred thousand dollars on just the tools. I know now its just wasted money. Keep your bride involved, they don't melt but sometimes the encouragement is the only way to get to spend more time together. You only live once... Now I am almost seventy five and not of good health, but a good life with a great dog... Rex, just a mutt from a humane society who is also fifteen... I hope he passes before me so I have a friend in heaven

Don't put epoxy over your Ospho. I've done a lot of testing with it.

Really ? What did you end up finding? I know a lot do guys who use it and have had great results. Did you bring down the acidity with something like laquer thinner?

@SubdivisionAuto You won't have good adhesion. I found that out the hard way 30 years ago. It has its uses. I have found if you wash it off and it gets neutralized, epoxy sticks much better. I have a short showing my test. The body filler even stuck. Couldn't beat it off with a hammer... lol

@@randywiddis interesting... I'll have to look into this more before I move forward. At the moment the vast majority of the car is in ospho but I don't plan to have the outside in it (minus the bottom of the floor and firewall). The outside of the car I will strip last because I'll imidataly epoxy it.
