Mount Timpanogos is easily one of the most popular hikes in Utah, and likely the state's most popular summit hike by a large margin. Timpanogos dominates the landscape along the central Wasatch Mountains and has long inspired adventurers and storytellers.
Home to Timpanogos Cave National Monument, mass hiking expeditions of pilgrims have been exploring the mountain, especially its many summits for over 100 years.
Timp's popularity and cultural significance to the people of Utah are perhaps unrivaled, but with all that love comes very heavy use. Please make sure to abide by all wilderness guidelines including NO DRONES IN WILDERNESS AREAS.
You can read more about wilderness guidelines at wilderness.net.
Trailhead #1: Timpooneke Trail 16 miles (out and back) 4389 ft
Trailhead #2: Aspen Grove Trail 15 miles (out and back) 4839 ft
Difficulty: Strenuous (don't underestimate this hike)

The legend was entirely made up by BYU professor Eugene Roberts in 1922. But it is a beautiful place.

From what we can tell, there are around 12 versions of the Timpanogos legend. It is almost certain that Eugene Roberts is largely responsible for the story entering public consciousness. Frank is likely right that Roberts was a driving force in the creation of the story. That being said, like most legends, not enough is known about the story's origin to give Roberts exclusive credit. Since Roberts others have added to and altered the telling.

Both trails that shouldn't be taken for granted. It's hard to say which is more hazardous. Angels Landing seems to experience fatalities more often, but it's also much more accessible. By the time you reach the Timpanogos Basin beneath the summit (where our hiking footage begins), you've already been hiking for around 5 miles and risen around 3000 ft. The prerequisite for even attempting a bid for the summit of Timpanogos is far beyond what is required for Angels Landing. You have to be reasonably competent to climb Timpanogos. Still, there are more than a few people who get in trouble when climbing Timp. I was there last year when the body of a lost hiker was recovered from Timp. It was a potent reminder that nature sets the rules. Hikers need to use good judgment whenever and wherever we travel. Thanks for watching and commenting!!!

Glad you liked the video. It's a trail that we treasure. The story is definitely sad, but we love how Wild Spaces inspire people to contemplate their connection to the land. The stories we tell and pass on add a human factor and opportunities for contemplation. That's definitely something we want to nurture. Thanks again for watching!

We're constantly learning about locations we "missed" as well. Totally sympathize. But we also love knowing we have an excuse to return to these spectacular locations. So glad you enjoyed the video. We hope you make it some day. Mt Timpanogos is well worth the effort. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!!

is the hike going back down hard? my wife and i would like to try and hike it. i just want to know if the hike back down is dangerous, slippery?
@HomeInWildSpaces
@HomeInWildSpaces 10 ай бұрын
That very much varies from person to person. It's nearly a mile of vertical gain and drop. It can be very hard on the knees on the way back down. This late the season there is almost certainly icy sections. If you and your wife have experience hiking 15+ miles with 4500 feet of elevation gain and drop, then this trail should be manageable. A caution: Climbing timp has become a mostly social goal. But it's best to make sure you're good on the fundamentals and comfortable on longer hikers before attempting to summit Timp.

can you sleep in the summit hut?
@HomeInWildSpaces
@HomeInWildSpaces Жыл бұрын
Technically yes, but I wouldn't advise it. The summit is a busy place, and I wouldn't expect much sleep. Better to campout at lower elevations and hike the last couple miles early in the morning if you hope to catch the sunrise from the summit.

People are always going to call it "The Timpanogos Glacier" because that is its name. Doesn't matter if it's actually a snowfield.
@HomeInWildSpaces
@HomeInWildSpaces 4 жыл бұрын
You are probably right. Referring to the snowfield as a glacier is baked into Utah's culture. That being said, we always want to make sure we give the most accurate information possible. Some people may view the distinction as unimportant, but we believe their is great value in addressing misconceptions. Still, thanks for your feedback. We very much appreciate it!
